But, if you don’t know what you’re doing or if you haven’t done your homework, you can be headed for a huge disaster - as well as some major hacking. #1: Avira AntiVir Personal Edition
If you are looking for a free antivirus that is super easy to use and really good at actually catching the viruses and spyware that can infect your computer, then you want to try Avira AntiVir Personal Edition. It is very light when it comes to resources and files that download to your computer so you don’t have to worry about bogging down your system. It’s also excellent when it comes to catching things, and the detection rate for malware is downright superb. In fact, it catches way more than AVG Free does hands down.
Of course, there are a couple of drawbacks with Avira. One is that it doesn’t do web or email scanning, which really stinks for those that need these - which pretty much everyone does. If you opt for the paid version of this free antivirus software, then it will cover you there too. Don’t worry though - if you are unlucky enough to open up an email or website that does have a virus in it, Avira will jump immediately and rid you of the pesky bug. Here is another superb free antivirus software program that you can easily download and use without much computer security knowledge at all. You will find that it has an excellent rate of catching just about everything possible, even rootkits. And, you will also find that there are very few “false positives” when it comes to some of the software that you have downloaded on your computer. For those that are average users of a computer (i.e. not a business or major computer guru), this is an excellent free antivirus, free spyware software program as it really doesn’t require much interaction from you to get it running. But, it can have a very slow scan speed and the amount of time that it takes to quarantine malware that it finds isn’t really the best. Also, some countries don’t allow this free antivirus, so make sure that you check before you try to download. This is probably the most popular one on my list and one that I use as well. It’s very easy to download, and an easy to set up and use free antivirus software that even beginners will find easy to control. Its protection easily pars the other two on my list and it has most of the real-time features that you really need if you are a heavy computer user.
