What are Popups and How to Eliminate Them?
“Pop-up ads are those small windows containing advertisements that literally pop up during your Internet sessions. In some cases, closing the window results in the repeated opening of one or more advertisement boxes. These boxes often are generated when you are surfing a commercial site, but they can also be launched by spyware.”
A popup blocker is a tool or a piece of software that prevents pop-up windows before attempting to view certain web pages. Many Web browsers have built in pop up blockers. (Note: Older web browsers may not get rid of popups so be sure to upgrade to a better web browser–like those found in the article.) Besides eliminating pop-ups from a web browser, “some Internet Service Providers include pop-up blockers in their connection software.”
PC users can stop pop-ups sent to their web browser from the toolbar. (See the different sections of the article to know more.) Also, installing and running a firewall management program can prevent pop-up ads and harden the security of a computer. Firewalls can be easily setup to run in the background while a user navigates the Internet to stop downloads from non-approved sites and block the pop-ups.
A popup blocker is designed to scan the web page for certain popup codes and if found, the popup blocker deactivates the command resulting in no popups on the screen. Popups may look like advertisements, marketing tactics, or simple dynamic graphic elements that appear when the user views a web page. However, they distract the user greatly and make it difficult to navigate through the website until and unless they are blocked or disabled. Hence firewall popup blockers are used to disable such pop-ups.
How to Selectively Disable an Anti-Popup Blocker
Usually there would be more than one pop-up blocker installed on the computer such as “Ad blocker” or “Window Killer.” In such cases you may have to configure them all individually. In other cases a blocker known as spam might be installed without the knowledge of the user. Popup blockers enable the user to either allow popups from the sites or temporarily disable their function. If a firewall pop-up blocker is installed, it displays a message whether to allow the popup or to block it. Hence the users can selectively disable the popups if they wish too.
