How to remove Micrcosoft Silverlight application storage contents?

In my recent article I wrote about apps which are able to deliver rich content inside your browser and by means of what they may do it. Another and much younger technology in the field is Microsoft Silverlight. Though it was first introduced only in 2007, it already gives to developers an ability to create very powerful, smooth and robust applications; look at Bing Maps, for instance. And, sure enough, this nice piece of technological thought is also using disk cache in addition to general browser’s cookies. This ability allows doing more within the same browser, because there is almost no restriction on used drive space comparing to cookies, which cannot be bigger than 4kb. Deleting browser’s cookies is simple task even considering it is different for different browsers. In my article about Flash I showed how to remove IE8 cookies. To be less monotonous in this one I will show how to remove them from FireFox browser.

To remove cookies from Firefox select “Options” from “Tools” menu. In the opened window select “”Privacy” tab and click on “remove individual cookies”.

In the newly opened window you may search and delete individual cookies or delete them all, whatever you want. And you may of course remove them manually form file system, but I would not recommend you to do it.

But returning to our Silverlight we again see the same picture: programs developed on Silverlight are using their own storage in addition to usual cookies. The storage is often referenced as “turbocookies” in developers’ speech. Similarly enough to Flash these files, stored on your computer may become a problem in terms of used space and, theoretically, security. So we need the possibility to remove them. And we have it, of course.

As usual, you have several options to remove Silverlight cache, or delete Silverlight Cookies if you prefer (there is only two of them because I failed to find any somewhat trusted program, which performs this task, but I cannot say I was looking for it hard):

  1. Delete them directly from your drive. They live in C:\Users\trofimov\AppData\LocalLow\Microsoft\Silverlight on my Windows 7 box. As always this method I not one I would recommend. The last resort; if nothing else works you may delete the cache in this way.
  1. From my point of view, the process is slightly easier than the same is for Flash: you need not go to any particular web resource to delete your Silverlight storage files; instead you are to open in your browser any Silverlight app, following which, right click on it and choose “Silverlight” option. Than go to “Application Storage” tab:

Delete Microsoft Silverlight Cookies

There is not much to do, actually; you may delete:

  1. All content at once;

  2. Content for selected site;

  1. Finally, disable application storage at all.

Not so rich configuration options choice as in the Flash configuration application, but quite enough for the aim we are up to in this article. Remove Silverlight cookies to be secure and enjoy your surfing.
