One of the common issues in setting up the AVG program is when the installer doesn’t finish as expected. An AVG setup error message may display such as: 0xC0070634 or General internal error.

The fix for this AVG general error is to remove the failed installation using the AVG Remover. Reboot the computer when AVG has been removed and then download the latest setup file for AVG.

Note that it is important to download the correct AVG setup file. If you are installing a licensed or paid version of AVG, check the e-mail you received from AVG sales for the download link. If you lost the e-mail message from AVG, simply download from the AVG website and click the “Paid version” download link instead of the “Trial version." AVG Setup Error

Other problems that people have experienced are the following AVG setup error messages when upgrading from an earlier version of AVG to AVG 2011:

  • An error occurred during the installation of assembly ‘Microsoft.VC90.CRT’
  • Error 1935

To stop the above error messages, temporary disable the resident shield in AVG 9.0 before using the installer of AVG 2011. If the problem in setting up AVG on top of the old version continues, uninstall the old version before installing the current version.

AVG Installation Failing

In the event the AVG installation continues to fail, follow the steps below to fix the AVG setup in Windows:

  • Ensure that the computer is not infected with malware. Scan the computer using Malwarebytes’ Anti-Malware or an online scanner to determine the security status of the computer. Remove malware infections before proceeding with the AVG installation.
  • Make sure that you are logged into Windows using an administrator account.
  • Always use the latest installation file of AVG.
  • Close all applications that can interfere during AVG setup.
  • Disable or remove conflicting software e.g., other antivirus programs, Ashampoo Firewall, Better File Rename, BlueCoat K9 Web Protection, PC MACLAN, System Protect, and ZoneAlarm Toolbar.
  • In Windows Vista and Windows 7, the User Account Control function may in some cases create a copy of specific AVG files in a virtual folder. This limits AVG’s functionality after installation.
  • Try to install AVG again.

AVG Update General Error

Updating AVG may also cause an “AVG update general error” with some AVG error codes or messages such as:

  • Invalid update control CTF file – To fix the problem, simply delete the temporary update files of AVG. Open the AVG program > Tools > Advanced Settings > Manage > Update. Click “Delete temporary update files."
  • Update failed. Connection with update server has failed – The cause of this particular error is the firewall or content filtering software. Ensure that the firewall program is not blocking AVG processes. If there’s an option to add trusted processes, add the executable files of AVG in trusted process (avgam.exe, avgcmgr.exe, avgdiag.exe, avgemc.exe, avgfws8.exe, avgiproxy.exe, avgnsx.exe, avgtray.exe, avgui.exe, avgupd.exe and avgwdsvc.exe). Also ensure the hosts file in Windows is not blocking AVG servers. Reset the hosts file using Microsoft Fix it 50267 if you are unsure what it is currently blocking them.

In some cases, the Internet settings are not correct. Review the Connections tab in Internet Options and make sure to uncheck all boxes in the LAN settings.

If updating AVG errors continue to occur, try repairing the AVG installation. Simply download the latest installation file of AVG software. Choose “Repair installation” to repair or reinstall missing or damaged components of AVG.
