Seagate offers more traditional looking external hard drives, both portable and desktop based. Their hard drive selection is more casual looking, with good design and color selection. For example, the Seagate FreeAgent Go portable hard drive is available in over 10 different colors.

Lacie offers a more unique looking hard drive line, both portable and desktop based. Their hard drive selection can best be described as ‘artistic.’ Many of their drives are oddly shaped, but stylish and neatly designed.

As far as Seagate vs. Lacie for Design, Lacie is the winner due to originality. Lacie hard drives are unique, and don’t look anything like the other external hard drives on the market.

Upon scanning sites like Amazon.com, Newegg.com, and TigerDirect.com, you will find that both Seagate and Lacie have similar customer satisfaction rates; and although neither company is anywhere close to having a perfect satisfaction rate, they are both top manufacturers in the external hard drive market. External hard drives are one PC component that tends to get lower customer ratings, no matter what brand it is.

In the end it’s a preference. These two brands are so close in pricing, that it’s all going to come down to which hard drive you prefer. As far as uniqueness of product and selection, Lacie is the clear winner.
