Transfer Photos to CD - How to Burn Images

Article by Rhonda Callow (10,362 pts ) , published Jul 7, 2009

Burning your images onto a CD or DVD is an easy way to transfer your digital photos from one computer to another. This article will talk about the benefits of using CD and DVD for this task and provide you with step-by-step instructions on how to transfer photos to CD or DVD.

How to Burn Photos to a CD or DVD

This is part 5 of a 6 part article series. To read the introduction, please visit How to Transfer Your Photos from One Computer to Another.

What are the benefits of burning you digital photographs to CD or DVD to transfer them to another computer?

1.  CDs and DVDs are relatively cheap.

2.  Burning your images onto discs creates an external means of backup, this is a good idea should something go wrong with your computer, such as the hard drive crashing.

3.  CDs and DVDs have quite a lot of storage capacity. So, depending on how many images you have, it can make the transfer of your photos fairly quick and painless.

What do you need?

  • CD-R or CD-RW. CD-R stands for Compact Disc-Recordable. CD-RW stands for Compact Disc-ReWritable (or Recordable/Writable). With a CD-R, you can burn data onto the disc only once. With a CD-RW, you have the option of rewriting data onto the disc. For example, with a CD-RW, you can add more information to the disc at a later date or you can delete the data and replace it with new information.

  • DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD+R or DVD+RW. (see above). The difference between the + and – is simply the preference of your disc drive.

To make a CD in Windows XP, simply insert a blank recordable CD and, when prompted, select to "Open a writable CD folder." A window will automatically open into which you can drag and drop the files that you want to burn. Once you've selected the files, click "Write these files to CD." And that's it. Note that with Windows XP you can only burn to CD unless you have third-party software that enables burning to DVD.

The process in Windows Vista is almost identical, but you can burn to either CD or DVD. Insert a blank recordable CD or DVD. In the dialog box that appears, click "Burn files to data disk." When prompted, enter a name for the CD or DVD and click Next. Once the disk has been formatted, a "Disk Folder" will automatically open. Files will be burned as they are dragged to that folder.

I recently received an email from a friend with a photo. I tried to email the photo to 2 family members overseas( one with yahoo account and the other with hotmail address ). I tried different methods; first I emailed the photo as an attachement and then as a shared picture through msn and Gmail. So far no success! I need your help.
Thank you!

CD or DVD ?
Hi Rhonda, I burn using iMac. When I use a CD the default is a 8x speed. With a DVD the burn speed is 1x.
I would assume burning at slower speeds is a higher
quality. Therefore I would assume the quality would be
better burning to DVD ? Thanks for your site, Frank

Photos to cd
Hi Rhonda,
When I tried to do this nothing happened when I put the blank CD in the drive. When I tried to access the CD from ' My Computer' the message 'not accessible' came up.
Any ideas?

Preserving Old Photos
Hi Ian,

You'll need to scan them to make digital copies. More info can be seen here: http://www.brighthub.com/multimedia/photography/articles/1019.aspx

Once you have the digital copies, you simply need to follow the steps above to put them onto CD/DVD.

A workaround - if you don't have access to a scanner - is to take a picture of the picture with a digital camera. This can be tricky to get "just right" though, so you may have to play around before you get it how you like. Try shooting with natural light, with your flash off. Also, using a tripod could help too.

Once you've taken the photos and have them on your computer, you can edit them to adjust the colors, saturation, contrast, etc. to make them look better. If you don't own photo editing software, there are plenty of free programs available. Here's a list of some popular options, if you're interested: http://www.brighthub.com/multimedia/photography/articles/4488.aspx

Good luck and please shout if you have any more questions!
