Things to Consider Before Jailbreaking Your iPhone 3G

Unlocking your iPhone can be great, but you need to consider some of the problems that can go along with it first.

Plan a Jailbreak

Many iPhone users out there have heard about “jailbreaking” their iPhone, which allows them to use the device in a number of ways that Apple had not intended. This can be a great way to customize your iPhone further, create and use unlicensed programs, and even use your iPhone 3G as a wireless modem.

Though this can be a great thing, there are a number of things that should be considered before doing this.

Do You Need It?

The first thing to remember before jailbreaking your iPhone is that if you don’t need to you shouldn’t do it. It will give you many more options, but if you are already satisfied with what is available on your phone and through the App Store then there is no reason to go through this process.

Jailbreaking can lead to a number of problems and confusing navigation, so only do it if it is necessary for your use.

The problems include:

1) Apple May Abandon You

2) Bricking

3) iPhone Problems

Apple May Abandon You

On several occasions Apple has refused to service or give warranty rights to hacked iPhones, though a lot of pressure will usually get them to switch their stance. They often claim that this action voids warranties and it will throw up a lot of red tape to go around. This is not for certain, but it does create a lot of issues. Apple has even threatened to refuse service entirely for hacked iPhones.

Bricking

There have been rare cases of “Bricking,” which is when a device is permanently disabled. This is usually around hacks that allow the iPhone to support third-party service providers or SIM cards. This is very rare, but it has happened.

iPhone Problems

The device itself can also suffer many common problems once it has been opened up. When it has the ability to do things that were not intended by Apple there are times when viruses, faulty programs, and other things can disturb the standard functions of the device. Common things that have been reported are the inability for the home button to work, the phone microphone getting disabled, strange error messages when connecting your iPhone to your computer, and so on. Remember that if you are going to jailbreak your phone you should make sure that you have a working knowledge of computers, both software and hardware.

How Safe Is It?

Hacking your iPhone can be a relatively safe way to liberate your device from the unreasonable hold Apple has over its service, but there are still problems that arise. Before doing it, make sure that you weight the costs and benefits of jailbreaking, and make sure that it is worth it to you.

Where to read up on jail breaks?
I've had my iPhone 3GS for about 6 months now, and I LOVE IT!.. Sadly I live in South Africa, with a South African Credit card and the useless South African App Store.

I'd love to get some cool apps(I don't mind paying), and do research on the web for them, but everytime I view an app it's either on the UK app store or US, and it won't take my credit card.

Should I jailbreak my phone and get it over with, or get a international Credit card?

Downgrading 3.1.3 to 3.1.2
I have the file to downgrade my iphone 3g to a 3.1.2 but when i click restore to the 3.1.2 firmare it says an error occured before it can finish installing. Could it be becuause I have the latest version of itunes?
t o Jul 14, 2010 3:57 PM
jailbreak do it
Before jailbreaking make sure you have backedup your phone through itunes and backup your shsh files (google autoshsh).
If you encounter any problems you can restore/downgrade if needed and not lose your contacts messages etc etc

Jailbreaking
Im jailbroken with 3.1.2 firmware, and i think its worth it. But dont do it if you dont think you can, and study up. And dont listen to half these people, as there uneducated. If you jailbreak your ipod/iphone, unjailbreaking is easier. Dont worry about the void in the contract, and just believe in yourself. i saw someones comment, that talked about not being able to send pictures in text anymore. Thats because that was a certian firmware upgrade that came with the iphone, and you probably downgraded to something lower. you can try to find a higher jailbreak, or just unjailbreak.

iPhone
Personally, I wouldn't jailbreak another iphone. I miss the apple updates.

Yes you get more apps, but it really depends what you use your iphone for.

Mine, is just a phone, talk text, music and games...

From experience I have found that the Samsung Jet phones are much better that iphones, despite ingame graphics etc, but camera is better and has a flash, no loss of signal, and the battery life is far superior to that of the iphone.

I bought my iphone for £40 with a contract upgrade... it was worth everypenny. Would I pay £750 for the new iphone 4? No. Waste of money.

RE: Things to Consider Before Jailbreaking Your iPhone 3G
iv heard good and bad things about jailbreaking iphones. i just recently bought a 3Gs and i dont want to screw myself over by jailbreaking my phone and something going wrong with it in the future and not being able to get it fixed because i "hacked" my phone. i would really like to jailbreak it but i dont want to void anything and i dont want to mess anything up. of course by people saying "if you dont need to jail break it, dont", like sure if we have a visa card and we can buy it... do it, but who would want to spend money over getting it for free. its either you pay for it or you risk ur contract, technical support, warrenty or all of the above.
jelly Jun 16, 2010 2:19 PM
help me please
i dont know if i should jail break my iphone 3gs i got it for my birthday and found out about jail breaking um realy worried about the risks because it over £450 so is it worth it or will i be loosing a lot of money and getting in to trouble

Installous update
Hi there jailbrakers!

After upadating installous to 3.1, dtunes was atomatically removed from the system and installous stopped working. After a while I figured that removing the safari download plug in would enable installous again ( and it did ). Installous is working fine. I tried to re install dtunes but it removed installous again, so I think it,s better to download apps than music or videos and decided to removed dtunes and safari download plug in... Any one has experienced this? How to fix this? If possible!

Jailbreaking
Jailbreaking is pretty safe, although it may be a pain sometimes, it is pretty safe. Don't listen to those other people who didnt do the jailbreak correctly and screwed up their iPod or iPhone. First off, jailbreaking is allowing your iPod or iPhone to do things beyond its intended capability. Unlocking is being able to use other services with your iPhone.

Steps to Jailbreak iPhone. (NOT UNLOCKING)

1. Make sure your iPod/iPhone is version 3.1.2 (if your iPod/iPhone is version 3.1.3 this jailbreak will NOT work, go to youtube and learn how to downgrade your iPod/iPhone)

2. Go to blackra1n.com, (not blackrain, blackra1n is the correct way to spell it) and click Windows icon if you're on Windows or Mac if you're on Mac. Save the file to: C:\Program Files\Common Files\Apple\Apple Application Support (copy and paste) then right click it and make a shortcut on your desktop.

3. Press on your keyboard Ctrl Alt Delete and end any processes having to do with ITUNES! Not if it has to do with Apple or an iPod/iPhone!

4. Right click the Blackra1n icon and click run as... the click Administrator and type in password. (NOT NEEDED IF YOU ARE ALREADY LOGGED IN AS AN ADMINISTRATOR ON YOUR COMPUTER)

5. Connect your iPod/iPhone to your computer and click Make It Ra1n. Then Wait for your iPod/iPhone to reboot (should show picture of guy with iPhones revolving around him on your iPod/iPhone) and Congratulations! You just jailbroke your iPod/iPhone!

For 1st Gen and 2nd Gen this is an untethered jailbreak which means the jailbreak is permanent. If it's a 3rd Gen you must re-run the jailbreak process everytime you reboot your iPod/iPhone.

If you have any problems make sure that you ended all processes having to do with iTunes, and make sure you have followed all the steps correctly before you start complaining.

so you have great support for a phone that does maybe 5% of whats capable with an iPhone? super. meanwhile the world passed you by. use a friends iPhone with good guidance on a few apps consistent with what your usual routine. by the end of the 1st day your nokia will be holding your bathroom door open
Amy Apr 1, 2010 5:41 AM
iphone
I don't know about you, but my Nokia e63 mobile is a champ. Even their mobile online support is great. I'll take my Nokia over an iPhone any day. As many blogs on www.dozenmobile.com say, there's a wealth of cool new phones out there. But if I want to change phone companies, no jailbreaking here, I just have to change the sim. Take that apple!!

whatever blows your boat
to hack or not to hack - that is the question. to suffer the slings & arrows of outrageous fortunes...

the disclaimers are from both sides - the manufacturer with their official firmware/software/updates/upgrades versus the jailbreak/homebrew community. on the manufacturer's disclaimer, you risk voiding your device. hacker's disclaimer is do so (hack/homebrew) at your own risk.

for those who are worried about hacking - research more into what steps you need to do to recover from such a (hopefully) temporary bricking. the Recovery Mode and the DFU mode are the essential steps in recovering/restoring your ipod/iphone from such 'disaster'. from my understanding, it is hard to totally brick your ipod if you follow the latest hacking instructions closely.

just make sure of what model your device is and check your software version - start from there, to hack your own particular device...

another final point, beware of the carrot-and-stick approach the manufacturers 'offers' with their latest system software/update - if you are getting into hacking...

hi ive recently got a ipod for christmas and want to jailbreak my ipod but i fear any of the above happening. I know what to do i just dare not do it. Can anybody give me advice to do it or not if the chances of it working are over 60 i will do it!

No problems
Jailbroke mine and have done so twice over the last half a year due to updates. As of now I haven't had one issue with it. If you want more control over your device just make sure you know what you're doing and you should be fine.
JUSTIN Jan 22, 2010 2:15 PM
wow
if you have baseband 05.11.07 you are good to go also the jailbreak works on the 3G, itunes recognized it fine syncs and you can turn it off and on without reconnecting it i repeat THE 3G ONLY!!!!
tommy Jan 19, 2010 6:01 AM
hey nathan
yh the same thing happened to me,well I think jail breaking is good but it has its disadvantages just like me and nathan here found out,you actually cant turn it off and if you do you wont be able to turn it back on without the program you used to jailbreak anyway I just restored my phone, its not worth it.
nathan Jan 18, 2010 1:16 PM
its too much hassle
i recently jailbroke my iphone sure actually doing it was easy but most sites dont tell you that doing so means you cannot turn off your iphone/ipod and you can no longer sync your phone to your pc meaning that once you restore your phone after attempting to turn it off (and thats the only way to make it work again) you will have none of your apps

Well, good 4 u on jailbraking 10 iphones already. But does itunes still recognize them? Do u have any complaints about this? I want to jailbrake my boring iphone, but I fear the above mentioned!

idiots
jailbreaking / unlocking is so simple a idiot could do it blind. there are risks (if you mess it up) if you brick your phone your an idiot and shouldnt be playing with things you dont know how to use. ive unlocked/jailbroken over 10 iphones from 2g to 3g, and 3gs.. its easy, ive NEVER bricked or broken a iphone jailbreaking. if you do your a twit. jailbreak your iphone simply because you paid for it and you should be able to do what you like.

Itunes not recognizing the cell phone
What if after I jailbrake my iphone itunes won't recognize it? Is there a posibility for this to happen? How will I be able to restore if this happens?

Problems
When I jailbreaked my ipod I found it incredibly easy to do and started to have a lot of fun but then I suffered some major problems. First, all my apps disappeared and the computer would not sync them back to the ipod, then my notifications menu from settings disappeared before my ipod slowing down massively and would have probably come close to bricking if I hadn't restored it. If I were you, I would steer very clear of jailbreaking.

I agree with Gman what he says make smore sense then the garbage ive been hearing. Im an IPhone 3gs holder and i love it but im sure if i jailbroke it it would be even more fun.

Jailbreaking iPhone
Looking at some other comments, seems that people have a problem with Apple. My problem is with AT&T. I think the phone is a fantastic product. However, they are married to a terrible service. And I have been with AT&T for 10 years. Service is worse now than ever before. Verizon has the best 3G service and unfortunately, no iPhone.

RE: Things to Consider Before Jailbreaking Your iPhone 3G
Well said gman! I love the irony that we are wanting to stick it apple, yet when we need to fix our mistakes, we turn to there software to do it, oh the agony
Andrew Sep 10, 2009 1:16 AM
I agree, stick it to apple!
I have the 1st gen Iphone. I've been debating ditching apple, and its Fascist ways, once I return from deployment (I cant stand Apple blocking good aps). However, they do have a superior product.....so I guess I'm going to upgrade to the 3GS and jailbreak it so I can get the aps I want. Cant wait to use google voice UI. ;-)

RE: Things to Consider Before Jailbreaking Your iPhone 3G
It would be nice to stick it to Apple, but at this point it really doesn't seem like its really worth it.
Awesome Aug 12, 2009 5:57 AM
should i?
i am really worried about the risks. I am confused and do not want to take a really big risk. What should i do? because i want the benefits.
Gman Aug 2, 2009 5:42 PM
Don't listen to the worry mongers..
There's nothing you can do on a jailbroken device that can't be undone.

Bricking?

Problems?

Apple abandonment?

Whatever, you're a simple restore through itunes away from bringing your iphone back to how it was before you jailbroke, therefore...

something went wrong during jailbreak and the phone won't respond ( bricked? ), no problem, just restore in itunes.

problems after jailbreaking? Maybe you fiddled about so much that you can't use it anymore, no problem, just restore in itunes.

Apple abandonment, no problem, just restore in itunes before sending it in and they'll never know.

Seriously people, there really can be no issues that can't be undone. Go for it.
