Like most mobile phones, texting is a feature on the HTC EVO. However, in addition to regular texting, the EVO also allows you to text preset messages and send pictures, video and audio files as attachments. Sending messages with the EVO is not a difficult task, but there are different steps that need to be followed depending on the type of message you are sending.

Text Messaging

Sending a regular text message to one person or more is a relatively simple process. Tap the “Home” key on your EVO (the key with a house symbol on it) and tap the up-arrow button on the lower-left side of the screen to open the “All Apps” menu. Select the “Messages” option. When the “All messages” screen appears, tap “New message.”

At this point, you have a couple of options available to you for selecting who to send the message to. One method is to input the phone number of the intended recipient in the “To” field. If you are sending the message to multiple recipients, enter in the phone number for each recipient and separate the numbers with commas.

The second method, which only works with your contacts, is to tap the “Contacts” icon on the upper-right side of the screen to display a list of your contacts. Tap the phone number (or phone numbers) you wish to send the message to and click “Done.”

With that done, you can begin composing the message itself by tapping the “Tap to compose” textbox. Use the on-screen keyboard to type out your message, keeping in mind that 160 characters is the maximum limit for a message. Check the counter above the “Send” message to see how many characters your message has.

After typing out your message, tap the “Send” key and the message is sent to all the numbers you listed. You also have the option to tap your EVO’s “Back” key (the arrow-left key) while composing your message to save it as a draft. To resume composing the text, navigate to the “All messages” screen and tap the “Menu” key.” Select the “Drafts” option and tap the message you saved to resume work on it. Tap “Send” when you are done to send it or “Back” again to save it as a draft.

Preset Messaging

The EVO comes with a list of preset messages that allow you to send a message without having to type it out yourself. You also have the option of editing these preset messages or even creating new ones.

Press the “Home” key and tap the up-arrow icon. Select “Messages” and then “New message.” Enter in the phone number (or numbers) you wish to send the message to in the “To” field or tap the “Contacts” icon and choose from your list of contacts. Press “Tap to compose” and tap the “Home” key. Select “Quick text” and a selection of preset messages appears. Tap the message you wish to send and it automatically appears in the text field. Tap “Send” to send the message.

If you wish to edit a preset message, press the “Home” key and select “Edit.” Tap the message you want to edit and use the on-screen keyboard to edit the message. When you are done, tap “OK.”

To create a new preset message, press the “Home” key and choose the “Insert” option. Use the keyboard to enter your message (remembering that it can only be a maximum of 160 characters) and tap “OK” when you are done.

As with regular text messaging, you can press the “Back” key to save your message as a draft.

Multimedia Messaging

How to Message on the HTC EVO

Multimedia messaging allows you to send photos, video and audio files you have stored on your EVO as attachments when you send a message. You can also send a slideshow of numerous photos with a message.

Tap the “Home” key and arrow-up icon and select the “Messages” option. Select “New message” and enter the phone numbers you wish to send the message to in the “To” field or select contacts by tapping the “Contacts” icon. Tap “Text to compose” and you can begin composing your message.

To add your attachment, press the “Menu” key and select the “Attach” option. Select the “Pictures” option to select from the pictures you have stored on the phone. When you find the one you want to send, tap it to attach it to your message. Tap “Videos” for a video attachment or “Music & sounds” for an audio attachment and follow the same procedure.

For a slideshow featuring several pictures, select the “Slideshow” option. Select “Add slide” and tap the newly-created slide to edit it. Tap “Insert picture” and select which picture you want to add. Tap “Add slide” again and follow the same procedure for each picture you wish to add to the slideshow. You can edit the slideshow by pressing the arrow up or arrow down buttons on the slideshow screen to select a slide. You then have the option of removing or replacing the current slide by pressing “Remove” or “Replace.” You can also press the “Menu” key to view a preview of the slideshow. When you are done with the slideshow, press “Done” to attach it to your message and press “Send” to send the message.

Again, you can also press the “Back” key to save the message as a draft and come back to it later.

General Settings

The EVO allows you to make general settings for all the messages you send. Tap the “Home” key and the arrow up icon and select “Messages.” Tap the “Menu” key and select “Sent messages.” Tap the “Sent notification” option to receive a notification in the EVO’s status bar when a message is sent successfully. You can also tap “Failure notification” to receive a notification if a message fails to send. The “Play notification sound” option causes the EVO to ring whenever a message is either successfully sent or fails to send. Select “Notification sounds” to select different ringtones to differentiate between successful sends and failures.
