Ever Wondered Who Makes Vizio Televisions?

As of 2009, Vizio is now the largest producer of LCD televisions in North America. Although the company is based out of California, their HDTV's are not Made in America.

Who Makes Vizio?

The first time I ever saw a Vizio brand flat panel television, it was in a Sam’s Club store in 2005. I had never seen or heard of the brand name before, yet they had a really nice looking HDTV on the shelf next to Samsung’s and Sony’s, but for a fraction of the price. Since then, Vizio has become the largest seller of LCD televisions in North America. You can find their TV’s all over the country, hanging in restaurants and bars, or maybe in a friend’s living room.

Like many people who first discovered this brand, I wondered who made Vizio. I thought perhaps they were an offshoot of some larger brand name, but they are really their own company based out of California. However, don’t think that Vizio is an American-made television. The company might be American, but the parts inside their HDTV’s are not. This should not be a surprise, considering how pretty much all electronic components are made outside of the United States.

Amtran Technology

The real question here is not who makes Vizio, but where they get their components. Any electronics company can mold a plastic shell and put an LCD screen inside, and that’s just what Vizio does. Rather than manufacturer televisions, you might say that Vizio just has someone else put them together. The majority of the flat panels found in Vizio HDTV’s are made by a Taiwanese company called Amtran Technology. According to an article on Forbes.com, Amtran also owns a 24% stake in the Vizio company. You might even say that Vizio is just another name for Amtran, since the guts of a Vizio HDTV are really made by Amtran.

Why Vizio is #1

What Vizio did was genius, because they took a highly desirable product and made it affordable, then put that product in stores that would reach the most customers. It used to be that you’d be hard pressed to find top name brand televisions in a Wal-Mart, but now they carry Sony and Samsung just like the major electronics stores. You can thank Vizio for this. Personally, I wouldn’t be too discouraged by the fact that Vizio’s products are really made in Taiwan, because most every HDTV manufacturer builds their sets from the cheapest possible components, and the majority of them come out of Asia.

According to an August 2009 press release from Vizio’s website, they hold a 21.7% market share as of the second quarter of 2009. Samsung is right behind them at 21.3%, and Sony has 11.9%. If you were to price compare similar model Vizio, Samsung, and Sony televisions, the Vizio would always cost less, with the difference sometimes being hundreds of dollars. A combination of a slowing economy and the recent "digital switch" in the U.S. has really driven up HDTV sales, and Vizio offers a solid product that costs less than anyone else. I know several people who own one, and they are quite happy with their investment.

For some really interesting reading, check out this 2007 interview with William Wang, the CEO of Vizio. Did you know that he is a plane crash survivor?

RE: Ever Wondered Who Makes Vizio Televisions?
Bought my Vizio three years ago and spent close to $600 for it. Recently when turned on it spends about four minutes turning off and on. Now two weeks after that started my screen flickers constantly. Just started looked at consumer complaints for Vizio and they are innumerable....all reporting the same thing. Tvs capacitors dying just after the warranty is up and customer service refusing to help. Me personally, I feel I should have had more than three years for the money I put out for this tv. And by the way, it costs between $300-$400 to fix my tv. I will never purchase another Vizio again as the majority do not last very long and the lack of help from customer service.

The only problem we've had with our new Vizio so far, is playing a DVD and having to turn the sound up as far as it will go.   Even then, we can only hear about half the dialog.

We have 4 Visio's, 4 years to 1 year, and all are excellent TV's.  Comparing side by side the clarity and color quality at Wal-Mart where I bought these, Visios were equal or better than everything in there. <br><br>But here's the biggest benefit of Visio, their customer service have real honest to goodness Americans to talk to.  You don't have to keep asking them to repeat what they just said.

Good luck because Vizio has very bad customer support, I use the reviews on amazon before I purchase any new electronics, thanks to China all of the profit has been removed from consumer electronics, I have seen many problems with equipment made in China as I used to work in the electronics industry, they do not know how to make a decent solder joint, the equipment will work usually for the warranty period and then it will start to get non operational because of the cheap solder they use.

vizio sux!
My vizio just died! Purchased at Costco whom even after numerous complaints from many customers, refuse to acknowledge the problem. Next flatscreen will be a Samsung. Costco does not honor its "customer first" warranty so dont pay for it!!!!

LCDs
The writer says that most HDTV manufacturers build their stuff from the cheapest possible components, which are from Asia. It's not just about price, because many of these parts, like LCD panels and (for stuff like cell phones and tablets) touchscreens, are made in Japan and Korea, which have higher production costs than other developed countries like the U.S. Taiwan ain't a cheap place to do business either. Many of the parts come from Asia because these companies have figured out how to make the highest-quality parts, i.e. those with the lowest failure rates. And things like touchscreens often are newer, proprietary technologies. So it's not just about price. The writer implies that HDTV's are pretty much all the same, except for the name on the bezel, which is not true, either. Electronics--the guts that drive the LCD or plasma displays--are of differing quality among manufacturers.
Finally: just because no-name companies like Amtran are making LCDs doesn't mean they are commodities--many of these firms are at the forefront of technology--it's just that they don't have the money to spend on branding, or they've figured it's not worth it to do so.

Very Pleased
I don't know what you guys are talking about for the most part.
I have owned my 46" Vizio for about 13 months now and it works today as the day I bought it and mounted it to the wall. I was actually sold on Vizio by my brother in law that says the same thing about his 42" that he bought 4 years ago.

Of course you are going to get a few bad apples out of the bunch but all and all it is a great TV for the price. Like many others before me have said.

To end off why don't you look under the hood of your $25,000 car and see how many Asian companies you can list. Then track it back to where that was assembled. You will find that most cars can not have the "Made in USA" label on it.

Black Screen of Death
1 year 1 month and 3 days after purchasing my first Vizio LCD flatscreen
I get the black screen of death. I don't know about the rest of you but I think these tv's should have lasted a little longer, I don't have the cash floating around to buy a 1000.00 tv every year. Whatever happened to made in the USA? (WalMArt that was your motto until your greed took over.) I probably sold a half a dozen to friends that stopped by and saw mine. To my friends that purchased these I will apologize now, To Vizio you should be banned from selling these tv's in the US. Personally I will never have a good thing to say about your business again. Just remember KARAMA is a B_____H! Our government should be ashamed that they allow products like this to be sold here, just another fleecing of the American Consumer! BUY MADE IN THE USA!!!!!!

Vizio Main Circuit Board
I bought my Vizio 50" Plasma HDTV March 2006. my main circuit board died April 2010... the replacement MCB died January 2011. The tv has a great picture, but the MCB is a weak link. Tough tot beat Vizio's price

To Gregg
assuming your hdtv from vizio cost u $1277 and lasted u 3.5 years = 1 dollar a day for a hdtv and their quality should be better 3.5 years later

link to the complaints
To the person who posted the link to the Vizio compalints... sorry but you can't go by a website like that. And if you do, then check Sony, Panasonic, and *EVERY* other brand, and they ALL have the same number or more of complaints about their TV's. And you can also bet that many of the posts are duplicates from angry customers because they are mad, and some I'm sure are also fake posts from competitors to the brand.

Vizio & LG are top Rated LCD
The Last 2 LCD i bought was one was the E320VL, The other was M55ONV this one is the LED VIZIO, I Always bought SAMSUNG, until now, Both LCD have the best picture i could find on todays markret for the money, In the show rooms i was wondering why the LG and VIZIO looked 100% the same, because the LCD panels are made LG, well for the money I'am very satisfied, i don't care if they were made in 2 buck ten or ten buck 2...Great LCD for the CASH....God Bless the LCD Makers..

Vizio
I am wondering if we are in a new era where major electronic products have a short life span. My 3 1/2 year-old Vizio just died and will cost several hundren dollars to repair.

This website has page after page of complaints against Vizio TVs.

http://www.consumeraffairs.com/home_electronics/vizio.html

I am wondering, if this is a problem for all electronic brands because most of the components are coming from the same factories in Asia.
Doug Klingenberg Sep 15, 2010 2:02 PM
Made in USA
According to a rep in CA all components are indeed made in the USA... Considering that I like the picture quality more than all but (2) other brands, and i've heard great comments about quality and customer support and satisfaction - that's the icing on the cake... I'm sold!!!!!

Vizio vs. Samsung
I bought a 40" Samsung LCD for the simple reason of their reputation for quality. The piece of "S" broke after 22 months of normal household use (main board had to be replaced $300). Samsung didn't want to know me because it was out of the 1 year warranty. Next time i'm saving my $$ and buying a less expensive model that i can return to a major store (like Sams) if it does break.

Taiwan Products
Taiwan, its own country and one of the 4 Asian Tigers/Dragons in the last century' Asian economic miracle, is really strong and a leader in electronics.

Although Taiwan has no very renowned brand companies like Japan and Korea, it is making headway.

Taiwanese companies HTC smartphones are gaining major popularity in US, and Acer computers are the 3rd largest in the world (give and take). Most Dell and HP computers are contracted to Taiwanese companies to make.
Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Corp is the world's largest chip foundry.

So, in sum, you can be pretty confident with product quality from Taiwan.

cheap components
Yes its true that most manufactures get their components from Asia but the difference is Samsung owns and operates those companies in Asia they have direct control over QC and Vizio does not. and even if that company is not directly owned by Samsung it is run by an X CEO that left to start this 3rd party company.

vizio TVs
If you ever open up a Vizio LCD TV you will clearly find that the LCD panel is made by LG. all the other componets and boards are from other companies too.

Vizio is a decent set!
"I wouldn’t be too discouraged by the fact that Vizio’s products are really made in Taiwan."

Neither would I, considering the newest, fastest, most innovative and price conscious electronics come from there. And let's be clear, Taiwan is not China. The manufacturing standards are much higher. ;)

That being said, I myself went for a BenQ 42"... liked the design, GUI and presentation a little better, the cost was the same.

The only other thing you may need to buy is cabling for your new TV - specifically an HDMI cable. Order them online instead of buying in a store and you'll save a ton of money.

HDTV's
Vizio price is on the money especially 1080's for less than sme 780's. Thinking of purchasing one but don't want to buy from R.O.C. When purchasing, do I need to buy anything additional??
God bless
