We all love candy, but some have an extra special love of candy, and if you’re one of these people, sink your teeth into this award. Students must be a college sophomore, junior or senior to apply. They must express an interest in confectionery technology and have a major at an accredited college in food science, chemical science or a related area. They must have a GPA of 3.0 or better on a 4.0 grading scale. Students must participate in research, projects, work experience and/or formal study relating to candy. The award is pretty sweet, since the winner receives $5,000.

Yes, this is exactly like its sounds: duct tape at the prom. Contestants, meaning couples of ages 14 or older attending the prom, must make their ensembles and accessories entirely out of Duck Brand duct tape. Contestants take photos and submit them for voters. Winners receive $3000 each. Second place is $2000 each; third place is $1000 each and seven runners up receive $500 each. This contest brings out incredible creativity in students and it’s incredibly funny to see. Do yourself a favor and go to the website to look at past winners. The study of parapsychology is the study of paranormal activity i.e. ghosts and apparitions. Have you ever seen the movie Ghostbusters or watched an episode of the television show Ghost Hunters? These people trying to find the ghosts by using special equipment – these are parapsychologists. This scholarship is worth $3000 and is awarded to a student who pursues the scientific study of parapsychology at an accredited university. Applicants must submit sample essays about parapsychology and provide three letters of recommendation from those familiar with their work.

Applicants are asked to sbumit an essay for a proposal that contributes to the heritage of the Van Valkenburg Family. The original Valckenburgs, Lambert and Annetje, were married in 1642 in Amsterdam and came to North America in 1644. Anyone who is a direct ancestor, by birth, legal adoption or has a variation of the Valckenburg name and writes an essay can enter for a chance to win $1000.

Juniata College doles out scholarship money for those who are left-handed. The scholarship fund awards $1000 to $1500 each year to southpaws. Since Mary Francis Beckley started the scholarship fund in 1979, more than 40 left-handers have taken advantage of this money. She left $24,000 in the fund and Juniata continues doling out money even today. Sophomores, juniors and seniors are eligible for this scholarship. Students answer the final question on Juniata’s aid form about if they are left-handed and this is how the scholarship recipients are decided.

All you have to be is a student entering college and tall. You must be under 21 years of age and attending college in the fall semester. Students win $1,000 for just being, well, tall. How tall you ask? A male student must span 6'2 and over. A woman student must be 5'10 and over. You also must be a current member of the Tall Clubs International (TCI) and the TCI Member Club closest to you must nominate you as a candidate. Awards are given at the annual TCI convention.
