Picking a laptop for video editing can be a difficult and expensive process. Save yourself regrets later by picking the one with all the hardware you need.

One of the greatest delights of high technology entering into the consumer realm is the fact that as home computer users we can do things that used to only be possible if you were involved in corporate audio and video production. Now with a small notebook you have the power to do complex digital editing projects.

Choosing the right Windows laptop for digital video editing depends on exactly what needs the home producer has.  Selecting between professional and amateur editing software should be your first step.

Windows Movie Maker

Many people only want to be able to do simple cuts on home movies and do not care about larger projects that require lots of options. If you just plan on doing quick home edits then the best option is to use Windows Movie Maker which comes standard on newer versions of the Windows operating system.

This program is very small and does not have many system requirements to run, and there is no reason to make laptop purchasing decisions based on the desire to use this program.

Recommendation: The software is designed to run on any standard home computer, so you should try and purchase a laptop that would better for more general use. There are many budget laptop conscious choices.

High End Editing Software

Now that professional editing programs are accessible for home producers it is not uncommon to find people who want to run superior editing software like Avid Media Composer, Adobe Premiere, or Sony’s Vegas Pro. These programs require powerful imaging resources and large hard drive space. You must keep in mind the specific requirements the editing software has for the system it will be running on. One of the best, and most economic, of the Windows running editing software packages is Sony’s Vegas Pro.

Processor:

It requires a system that with a processor at least 1GHz, but if you want the option to edit High Definition video then you are going to want to have at least 2.4 GHz.

This is going to be the standard for any laptop that you want for editing, and somewhere between 2.5 and 3.0 GHz will be best.

Hard Drive:

You are also going to want a sizable hard drive since you are not going to want to deal with external hard drives when you are already using a portable computer. Though small projects will only run you a few GBs, it is a good idea to get somewhere between 150 GB and 250 GB. If you are planning on using all of the programs in one of these editing suites then you need to purchase a computer that has the speed and power to run simultaneous programs at once.

Sound and Video Cards:

You are also going to have to keep in mind the quality of sound and video cards you are going to be working with. Video editing requires you to focus on image and audio details on a very minuscule level, and you need hardware that will render this.

Recommendation

One of the companies that puts together laptops with these higher end hardware needs in mind is Alienware.

Many of their laptops are designed for video games, which means that their multi-media capabilities are top of the line. Though Alienware is one of the best, it is also the most expensive. Hewlett-Packard makes a quality machine that can be built exactly to your specifications. Make sure to get quality graphics and audio cards. nVIDIA makes great graphics cards while Audigy sound cards are best for real-time editing.

The most important thing to remember when picking out the best Windows based laptop for video editing is exactly what type of editing you will be doing and what else you might be doing with that computer.

Complex video editing requires a powerful and speedy machine, so if you are expecting to do large edits on a mobile computer expect to empty your bank account.

At least 500 GB of hard drive capacity. A tin minutes of HD video at 1920x1080 to take up to 400 MB. If you edit full length movies you need an external hard drive. Hard drives quickly, but terribly expensive so you can kill them. And two hard drives in RAID array is good. You'll want an Intel Core i7. The video is the work depends on the CPU so you need the power. Must be at least 4 GB of memory. This will help with treatment. LED offers better color screen and backlight brightness and durable, even through the screen. If you have a lot of editing you want to connect to FireWire to transfer files to and from the external hard drive is easy.

Yes. But most people (myself included) stay away from the Adobe Premier products because they crash often, and install lots of added "bloatware" for their software to run. Other programs, like Sony Vegas Pro for example, install nothing else on your computer except what is necessary to run Sony Vegas.

Alienware. Macs have limited software. Macs, for all intent and purposes today, use exactly the same hardware: eg, same GPUs, same Intel CPUs, etc. The Mac hardware today isn't nearly built as fast or capable as the top-end Windows based laptops.

Yeah, your laptop needs to have a fast processor and a sizeable hard drive. Hmm, but it's better to just have a MacBook or a desktop computer. Having either gives you more performance and more storage space for those videos.<br>

Laptops for editing
You can build a killer ITX (mini PC) for a fraction of the price of a laptop. You get the power of a desktop but very portable. You can add the best graphics cards for Open GL abd full size SATA hard drives. If you're serious about editing video, a desktop is the ONLY way to go. www.tomrennen.com

alienware stay away
Just a note on alienware. Stay away. I have a client (a high school football team) who has some high end video editing software just for football teams. They needed good laptops.. I got them to i7 alienware laptops with striped hard drives, 6 gig of ram each.. spent almost 4,000 dollars a for each of them. Within one month both motherboards failed. ( work on computers for a living) Dell tech came out to replace boards.. both boards were referbished boards, and were DOA. I called dell furious and told them I was very unhappy and I wanted my money back.. Dead end all the way... told them I do not want refurb boards.. They said they guarantee no reburb boards.. They sent.. ( you guesed it. reburbished boards... Long story short.. after hours on the phone and 3 different techs they finally got one running and it died a week later, the other one is still sitting on my desk. I called American Express to get my money back because Dell will not listen. Would not even agree to at least give me a three year warranty. I believe I can prove these computers were built with refurbished parts in them. Dell if you see this you know exactly who I am, I told you I plan on telling the world and I googled best laptop for video editing and saw where someone on this site mentioned alienware as the best laptop. While you do have the fastest laptops your hardware is awful and not worth the headache

If your serious about editing
This is great advice, if you want a quick, on the go edit... like if your a travel filmmaker, or just want something quick and easy hence not that serious. If your editing a 'short' film, or a feature, why would you use a laptop??? Get yourself a serious mac desktop, a large screen (even multiple screens if you have the room, and money), set it up with some decent professional sound equipment... That stays put!... if your serious about editing, a laptop isn't the way to go. you will never get the power you'll get from a mac desktop, even a G5 in a laptop. Great for getting a rough cut done on the bus or train, if but leave your fine cuts to when you get back to the studio... always using a mac, i mean why use a machine that wasn't designed for it.

Instead of just criticizing the article why not you (Shane and Marks) add some constructive advice.

Being that I am just finishing a Master's in film production with a focus on digital post-production I think I qualify. The article is geared at home producers who need an easy "on the go" video editing machine, and was also written a year and a half ago.

who the...?
Being a serious post producer, I can't figure out why anybody would hire a couple of Jr High kids to write on such an important topic.
Do you have any writers on staff?
