Looking for a top free firewall for Windows 7? Here you find all you want to know about top free firewalls for Windows 7 including, but not limited to, the Windows 7 built-in firewall. In this article you also find background information as well as valuable tips concerning Windows 7 top firewalls.

Introduction

There used to be much more free firewalls software for Windows until Microsoft built in a firewall in its Windows XP operating system. That Windows integrated firewall has been beefed up in Windows Vista and further improved in Windows 7.

Also taking into account suggestions from our readers posted as comments the following vendors or free top firewall software products make up the candidates. They have been last checked for official Windows 7 compatibility on 20 March 2011.

Candidates

  • Ashampoo FireWall FREE Version
  • Blink Personal Edition - free-antivirus.eeye.com no longer freeware!
  • Comodo Firewall
  • Online Armor Firewall
  • Outpost Firewall
  • PC Tools Firewall Plus
  • Sunbelt Personal Firewall Version - www.sunbeltsoftware.com
  • VirusBuster Internet Security Suite
  • Windows 7 Firewall Control - www.sphinx-soft.com/Vista/order.html
  • ZoneAlarm Basic Firewall

Again: Many former vendors of free firewalls (e.g. Tiny, BlackIce, and Kerio) have been taken over or disappeared from the market. Therefore, the Top Free Firewalls for Windows 7 candidate list might be smaller than what you have expected.

Not all free Windows 7 compatible firewalls are top products. To be listed here a software must have been rated very good or excellent, but in most cases when a firewall software / vendor is not listed it is due to a lack of Windows 7 compatibility, not quality. The comments section at the end of this article sometimes gives the reason or contains more background information. Keep in mind that besides a firewall you need to have have a capable antivirus software such as the one’s mentioned in Bright Hub’s article Top Antivirus Software for Windows 7 installed.

Now enjoy the free firewalls are sorted in alphabetic order. Please see the reference section at the end of this article for the links to the vendor's product pages.

Why not stick with the Windows 7 free firewall which, by default, is turned on? You can view and configure the Windows 7 integrated firewall in Control Panel / Security Center. Here's a good read about the Window 7 firewall: http://www.brighthub.com/computing/smb-security/articles/38834.aspx

I had Zonealarm Pro on Win 7/64 and it screwed up the torredo tunneling.  Fortunately, I was able to find a scary Register fix for that after uninstalling Zonealarm.  I don't know how well the freeware works, but I know that the Pro doe not work properly on Win 7.

Disagree: Sunbelt Kerio -still- works succesfully on all 32-bit win versions in our company.

Free firewalls.
Comodo Free firwall works well, uses few system resoursces, BUT when it goes wrong ( on 64bit machines ) it screws the system so bad only a total restore will put it right. There is NO reset button or reset to default that WORKS. I use Avast antivirus with comodo firewall. The sandbox on comodo blocks avast from updating ! I also use mobile broadband dongle. I recently learnt that Comodo firewall does not protect torredo tunneling which is what a dongle uses to connect. pointless ! STICK with windows firewall. It works well uses practically NO rescources and ensures that Nothing connected to the running of your system ( windows dlls etc )is blocked.

I have been this year alone tested few different types of firewalls and one thing allways have bugged me, why one peace of software cannot get blocked by most commerical products, that peace is spotify, it have so many in build failsafe alternative ways of connecting to its servers that norton, kaspersky, f-secure and many others havent been able to successfully block it, how ever this one peace of free software can and its Comodo Firewall.

I have thrown countles of tests at Comodo Firewall and none of them have got trough.

I used to be comodo user in its early stages (Internet Security), it was consuming more system resources than other products and were not yet good as other free products aviable, now few years later its other way around, uses less resources and is doing better than most of the commerical non-free products at least for firewall part of the software, i still dont consider anti-virus part of the product good as others, firewall that comes with defence+ is where it shines and thats why i use combination of Norton AV 2011 + Comodo Firewall in one pc and Kaspersky AV + Comodo Firewall in 2nd pc.

Comodo it is now one of the best software firewalls around if not best.

Comodo ROCKS
Just downloaded it and installed it. Tons of customizable settings, but also really easy to set up. Lightweight, won't bog your system down and it doesn't assault your with obscure messages or unnecessary BS. Best one I have found for windows EVER.

@O. Paul
You are right O. Paul.

“The Sunbelt Personal Firewall 4 DOES NOT run on:
• Any 64 bit Versions of Windows
• Windows 2003 Server
• Windows 2000 Server
• Windows 7
• Windows NT4
• Windows Me
• Windows 98
• Windows 95“
- http://www.sunbeltsoftware.com/Home-Home-Office/Sunbelt-Personal-Firewall

It essentially means the The Sunbelt Personal Firewall is phased out.

Sunbelt/Kerio
Per the Sunbelt site, the Sunbelt/Kerio Personal Firewall is not Windows 7 compatible.

@Adam
I have an XPS myself, and I currently use
free AVG antivirus for which I tweaked settings according to my needs. However, you may want to look for the top AV which suit your needs here: http://www.brighthub.com/computing/smb-security/articles/34468.aspx
With regard to a firewill I recommend Comodo if you are an advanced user, else you may want to stick with the built in firewall.

Hi Everyone,

Does Mark or anyone else have an opinion on Private Firewall by the above company? It's got a gorgeous GUI and is highly config, I had the 6 version working well on XP32, but when I moved to the 7 version on XP32 I could not configure it to block the ins and outs of my choosing. I'd love to use the 7 version on Win7-64 but only if I can get a good word from the geeks out there because I'm also willing to stay with the Win7 built-in FW. Thanks!

@Deon Fialkov

You may leave the Windows firewall configured "as is" by default, and use/tweak Comodo or AVG to suit your needs.

If AVG is only anti-virus leave it, but I wouldn't use 3 firewalls together.

Good morning

Was wondering if one needs to have AVG installed , Windows Firewall on and Comodo Firewall installed.

Also does one need Nukenabber?

Outpost FW
I tried installing Outpost FW on Win7 64 this weekend. It says that the free version is not compatible with Win7, only the pro one is.
Shame, since I was pleased with it on WinXP.

Thanks for your feedback. Further to your feedback I will add a comment to the Blink firewall on the list.

However, the listings will remain because of its nature as candidate list.

Free ? firewalls
Thanks for the info. but i dont think you should be listing Ashampoo as it dosnt install on Win7. Also how can you list a number of them like Blink that are not free. They have a 30day trial, that is not free.

pc tools firewall plus
I have install pc tools firewall on my computer where are install win7 and in a virtual machine win xp. This firewall block any connection in a virtual machine. To run my connection on a virtual machine, I have stop the firewall. This is a ver low security for win 7.

RE: Top Free Firewalls for Windows 7
PC Tools is a decent firewall until you have multiple OS system computers networked. I have 1 Win7, 1 Vista and 2 XP machines running behind a D-Link 615 wireless router and PC Tools will either block or slow down any file transfers between machines. I spent hours trying to create rules to allow communication and finally just gave up and uninstalled it. After uninstallof PC tools Firewall my Win7 computer reports that my install is not genuine. If you have a single computer the firewall is great. If you have a network be prepared for problems with sharing for sure and internet connection possibly in some cases. My $.02.

Comodo can destroy Windows 7 Installations
I installed Comodo Free on my fresh Win7 install. I decided to uninstall and then the fun begins. After a normal uninstall process and rebooting, Win7 crashes. Restoring to any step other than Comodo Install resulted in a crash. There are many reports of problems uninstalling this software. I would avoid installing it.

Re: Devil got my IP
Firewalls for Windows 7 is a bit like all or nothing in terms of configuration.

The easy way is using the Windows integrated firewall as is or with some modifications, whereas the more secure Comodo FW can be a real challenge.
Devil got my IP Jan 14, 2010 2:45 PM
Comodo Firewall a retarded firewall for retards!
Comodo Firewall is probably the worst firewall ever. It basically does nothing for most users. They have unfortunately made it so "user-friendly" that the user have no control.

Remove all trusted publishers and it still trusts everything it thinks is from Adobe and probably a whole lot more software. This is totally unacceptable for any serious firewall.

Lets all just agree that this "firewall" is a joke and should be trusted just as much.

I'll try Zone Alarm 9.1.007.002 now..

Zero Day Protection
You have my vote for eEye Digital Security's Blink security endpoint suite! None of the other applications are going to be able to protect you from a Zero Day Vulnerability being exploited.

@dudubitn
Ashampoo FireWall has been a candidate on our watchlist but we don't recommend it in this thread. You are probably better off uninstalling Ashampoo FireWall and use one of the rated firewalls.

PC Tools Firewall Plus Free Edition
Sorry guys, I'm using PC tools free Firewall for a while on my Vista running system (32bit) without any problems.
I checked with F-secure on-line scanner for any malicious malware or spyware but nothing was found.
My previous firewall was Comodo Internet security, but it slowed down my computer due to a bad or incomplete virus-base update.
Hence I stick with PC Tools and Avast Antivir (combination of both programs runs very smoothly).

ZoneAlarm Pro compatible with Windows 7
ZoneAlarm Pro version 9.0.114.000 tested is compatible with Windows 7 - this version works without problem. A good alternativ to Sunbelt kerio Personal Firewall v4.6.1861which is until now not compatible with Windows 7.

i use win 7 64bit ultimate and when i use pc tools firewall all http conections is blocked after several hours and the only way to fix it was a restart (luckily win 7 restarts quickly).... i know its pc tools because the issue is gone after uninstalling it

its weird when the bug ocurs all the downloads that are already ruuning continue to work but when i use mozilla and internet explorer, it immediatly fails to load any webpage

unless this issue is corrected id advaise to avoid pc tools free firewall

Error 109
@Erin
If you are getting "error 109" it is likely because you have downloaded the 32 bit version by mistake.

If you use "google chrome" then it seems to download the 32 bit version no matter what you select from the drop down box.

The solution is to either download using IE, or copy the download button link and then replace "32" with "64"

This was driving me crazy but works like a charm now.

Only the paid for versions of ZoneAlarm work with Windows 7. At the moment there is no free basic version that is compatible with Windows 7.

@Erin
Well done Erin!, and thanks for the update. Indeed do the Comodo downloads default to the 32-bit setup files, so as a consequence of what happened to you I have integrated this valuable piece of information learnt from you in the article.

@Eddbo
You are making a very valid point Eddbo. One FW should be enough, but I wouldn't necessarily uninstall / disable the Windows 7 integrated firewall following the best practice never touch a running system.
Make a system state backup / OS image first otherwise. I wouldn't be surprised though if making changes to the Windows 7 integrated firewall leads to minor side-effects that creep up some day.

Comodo firewall
Hi Mark,
I was finally able to install the Comodo firewall on my Windows 7 64. I eventually realized that although I had selected the 64 bit from the download page, I was downloading the 32 bit version. Since I did a clean install, the javascript on my firefox wasn't allowing the Comodo website. As soon as I did that, I was able to download the correct version. I hate having to start over with the permissions on my new OS, but I've got to be careful. I just have to remember to allow these pages before I put any info on them :).
Thanks for your comment.
Eddbo Nov 3, 2009 10:08 AM
comodo firewall.
Hi I'm new to this website so sorry if I sound very naive about things.
I have just taken the step up from xp to windows 7 and have had a few teething problems. I have downloaded and installed comodo firewall, but am not sure whether I should turn off the windows firewall now. Do I need to run both? I had always used zone alarm but as this is not an option in windows 7 I have gone for the comodo as it asks when things want to get onto the net as zone alarm did. So nice to find a site that advises on more than 1 product.
Thanks.,

RE: Top Free Firewalls for Windows 7
@Erin
I am afraid, I only own 32-bit PCs, where the FW installed like a breeze.
Have you tried to find a solution in the Comodo forum? If you can't find any useful information there why not make use of the free Comodo support. All you have to do is register and open a ticket.

Cheers,
Mark

unable to install comodo
I cannot get comodo to install on Windows 7 64. Every time I run it, I get the error 109: Not able to extract InCompatsw.ini.
I have tried to disable the windows defender and the built in firewall while I try to run it as administrator. I have downloaded the latest version I could find, 3.12.111745.560. I have also tried an earlier version.
Does anyone have any other suggestions I can try?
Thanks,

RE: Top Free Firewalls for Windows 7
Thank you all for your valuable comments!

@ KJ: Indeed is Online Armor Free not Win7 compatible as of today
@swatti: VirusBuster Internet Security Suite isn't Windows 7 compatible either
@Jeffrey: Blink PE doesn't make it to the list currently. The product lacks official Windows 7 compatibility, and is limited to 30 days use for people outside of North-America
@Karoly: I can confirm that Sunbelt Personal Firewall Version as of today is Windows 7 incompatible
@ "the all seeing I": Microsoft Security Essentials provides anti-virus functionality and does not include any firewall functionality per se.

Online Armor 3.5
OA 3.5 will not work with Win 7. They released a beta version this week that seems to run pretty well on 32-bit, but for 64-bit, this is from their support forums.
"This is x86 only; We are actively developing x64 now and will have a beta out (if things go well) towards year end."

VirusBuster Internet Security Suite is very good, very details log and good support.

Comodo Firewall Causes Problems in Windows 7 x64
I have been having problems with Windows Explorer crashing in Windows 7 x64 when right clicking. Then today I get a red message from the firewall about Explorer.exe

PC Tools Firewall also has issues with Windows 7 x64 causing internet connection problems.

None of the others to my knowledge offer a free x64 version that will install for Windows 7 without running it in Vista compatibility mode.

Blink Personal Edition for Windows 7
I would choose Blink Personal Edition for Windows 7 because it is one of the few security applications that can protect a Windows based system from the exploitation of vulnerabilities in the Operating System itself and 3rd party software. Blink Personal Edition is free for one year and currently supports Windows 7 32bit. eEye is working on support for the 64bit edition as we speak.

More information on Blink can be found here:

zonealarm vs windows7
zone alarm will not work in windows 7!! not without using windows vista sp1; which at this is particular point is incompatible with windows 7!!
i don't know how anyone can possibly be using zone alarm free firewall in windows 7. i have tried and tried to install zone alarm free firewall into win7, it keeps telling me to get winvis sp1!!
if there is anyway to install winvis sp1 over the top of win7...well then i would sure love to know how....i mean without hacking the win7 registry (unless that is the only way).
currently i am using the win7 RC edition and not the full consumer release...since it won't actually be out to the public till october. so what am i missing here?? am i delusional, does zone alarm have a secrete sight that only savvy win7 techno-geeks know about??
as far as i know win7 (public release) will already have the sp1 embedded. that doesn't really help anyone who needs to install sp1 needy programs like zone alarm free.

Free Firewalls for Windows 7
Ive been using firewalls for several years. It does everything I need it to and is pretty secure compared to others. In the past I have used kerio, windows firewall, zonealarm, Comodo, Sunbelt etc. I really liked Comodo, it is bullet proof but is a bit overkill for me. Used to use kerio 2.1.5 last free version I think. PC tools Firewall while it may not be as bullet proof as comodo (which i think works with 7 but Im not sure), is really good, configurable, user friendly(for the most part), but (and this is of utmost importance for me), the fact that it doens't consume a boatload of resources is one good reason to use it.

Using avast for antivirus, Again hae used it for a while now, Not sure about resources, but doesn't seem to use much ram,, and gives a lot of false positives on some tiles that should be in question anyway. And its free and is filled with features that many paid for Security apps don't have.

Just my two cents. And curious to see what everyone else is using.

Microsoft Security Essentials (aka Morro)...
...will be a low end segment security suite. That is what MS themself is saying about it. I don't think it will be any better than Windows Defender - which is going to be discontinued - compared to other Anti-Malware software. I suppose that MSE will be some sort of minimal protection (better than nothing), but it will never ever compete against any of the 3rd party Security Suites. I don't think that the OS, the firewall, the security suite and all of that out of one hand is a good thing. Yes, I use google, but i would never use Chrome.

@AJ
Thanks AJ. I am sure you have saved other readers the effort of testing all the listed firewalls candidates and come to the same conclusion as you. However, for me to announce a product to be compatible with or ready for Windows 7 there must generally be a vendor statement because the computer’s security is at stake. Thanks a lot for sharing your experience AJ!
Have a nice day and a good time with Windows 7 - Mark

Free Firewalls for Windows 7
Hi Mark,
I stumbled across your blog today while looking foe an Free Firewall that's compatible with Windows 7. Well, Just wanted to let you know that as at today, it appears that PC Tool Free Firewall Plus seem to be working fine in Windows 7. Like everyone else, I've been looking for a free firewall that's compatible with Windows 7 but so far the top ones like Comodo, Zone Alarm, Outpost, and so on were all no gos.

I thought I'd give PC Tools a shot (though I'm not much of a fan) and thus far, it seem to be working smoothly...just thought you might be interested to know that. Have a great day!
