Naproxen is a pain medication that is categorized in a group of drugs known as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAID’s). Naproxen medication reduces pain and inflammation by reducing the hormones that cause it.

The medication is used to treat a number of conditions. It is commonly prescribed to treat arthritis and ankylosing spondylitis. It is also prescribed to treat bursitis, gout, and tendinitis. It can be prescribed for menstrual cramps as well.

Naproxen Warnings

There are numerous warnings that are associated with the use of this medication. It is known to increase complications with heart functions, causing life threatening conditions. The risk increases the longer the medication is used.

This medication can also cause serious complications within the stomach and intestines. The conditions it produces can become fatal and can occur without warning. Older adults are more prone to these complications.

Naproxen Interactions

Naproxen can interact with a number of medications. It is known to interact with both prescribed and over the counter medications. You should not mix this medication with cold or allergy medications. Do not mix it with other pain medications, such as ibuprofen or ketoprofen. You should not drink alcohol while taking naproxen either.

Naproxen Precautions

If you have certain prior health conditions, this medication may not be right for you. People that have had heart attacks, strokes, and other heart diseases should not take this medication. It may not be right for you if you have experienced blood clots and liver or kidney disease. People with high blood pressure may not be able to take this medication. If you have had a history of stomach ulcers, blood disorders, or asthma, you may not be able to use this medication.

Naproxen Side Effects

There are many side effects associated to the use of naproxen medication. Common side effects of this medication include stomach upset, heart burn, and stomach pain. You can also experience constipation and diarrhea. Bloating, gas, and skin irritation are common side effects. When prescribed this medication you may experience dizziness, headache, and blurred vision.

Rare and serious side effects are also known to occur. These rare side effects include chest pain, shortness of breath, and weakness. You may also experience vision problems, slurred speech, and loss of balance. Other rare symptoms include unusual stools, coughing or vomiting blood, and unusual vomit. Unexplained weight gain and swelling are rare side effects of the medication. Other rare and serious side effects can occur from naproxen; any unusual symptoms should be reported to a doctor as soon as possible.
