Introducing the LG Apex

The LG Apex is the newest thing to come from the U.S. Cellular. It is this company’s fourth smartphone model running the Android OS. LG is a cell phone manufacturer with a lot of experience which is expressed in a great build quality, durability and an abundance of features. This model has a full QWERTY keyboard which slides out from under the screen. The keyboard shows that this phone is intended for people who text a lot or people who receive and write a lot of emails. This is not a GSM phone and it cannot be used on any GSM network worldwide.

Design features of the LG Apex (4 out of 5)

LG Apex

This smartphone has a clean and simple design, all of the buttons are in the right position and the full QWERTY keyboard is almost perfect. The dimensions of this cell phone are 116 x 56 x 16 mm and it weighs 158 g. It is a big and heavy cell phone but the weight is justified by the full QWERTY keyboard and the size is justified by the large 3.2 inch TFT capacitive touch screen. It can display 256K colors and supports a resolution of 480 x 800 pixels. This smartphone comes in only one color, black.

User Interface (4 out of 5)

The user experience is typical for every Android OS powered smartphone. Moving through the menus is fast and all of the icons are easily recognizable. You can configure the home screens to suit your needs and there are a lot of applications which you can download from the Android Market; this will satisfy your needs and upgrade the features of your smartphone. Running applications is not as fast as it is on some other Android powered smartphones, mainly because of the less powerful processor and the small amount of RAM. Using the full QWERTY keyboard gets rid of the annoying typing with the virtual keyboard on the touchscreen. Using it makes everything easier and faster.

Features of the LG Apex (4 out of 5)

LG Apex 2

This cell phone is just packed with technology. It has all the components that a modern smartphone should have. The connectivity of this mobile phone comes with a lot of options. It supports: 2G networks with CDMA 800 / 1900, 3G network with CDMA 2000 1xEV-DO, WLAN Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth v2.1 with A2DP, micro USB v2.0 for PC connection and charging, and a GPS receiver with A-GPS support and VZ Navigator.

The LG Apex has a 3.15 MP camera which is a minus compared with the current best smartphones. The camera can take pictures with a resolution of up to 2048 x 1536 pixels and it features autofocus and LED flash. You can also record VGA video. The multimedia capabilities of this smartphone include an audio player with support for MP3/eAAC+ and video player with MP4/H.264+ support. Other software features on this cell phone are: Digital Compass, Organizer, Voice commands/memo/dial, predictive text input and messaging with SMS, MMS, email, Push email and IM. The processor in this smartphone is a Qualcomm MSM 7627 600 MHz running Android OS v2.1 Eclair. The phone has 256 MB RAM, 512 MB ROM, 100 MB internal storage and memory expansion slot for micro SD cards for up to 16 GB of storage space. There is also an HTML web browser.

Performance rating (3 out of 5)

The LG Apex has great sound quality; voice level is high and audible even when talking from a noisy place. The processor is the weak point of this smartphone. It cannot compete with the more powerful competitors on the market today. Thanks to the great Android OS, using the menu, the applications and features is easy, fast and fun. The phone has standard Li-Ion battery with a 1500 mAh capacity which is enough for 500 hours of stand-by and up to 7 hours and 30 minutes of talk time.

The Verdict (4 out of 5)

The LG Apex is a great smartphone. But it cannot compete with the best because of the camera, processor, RAM, the lack of GPRS and EDGE along with the fact that it cannot be used all over the world. The biggest attribute of this smartphone should be the price per performance ratio, you get more for less. If you want a phone that costs less than a top model, but has almost the same features as a top model and you’re willing to sacrifice performance then the LG Apex is the perfect smartphone for you.
