Guide to St. John's Wort and Its Uses

Herbal Capsules FDP Credit hinnamsaisuySt. John’s wort is used to treat symptoms of anxiety, sleep disorders and depression. Herbalists take the yellow flowers from each plant to use in various preparations, such as teas, capsules and tablets. In addition to these formulations of the herb, topical preparations (skin creams) and liquid extracts or tinctures are available for use.

It has not been found to be effective in treating symptoms of depression; it was no more effective in relieving symptoms than a placebo. Because of the risk of interaction with certain prescriptions, some people should not try using this herb.

For patients suffering from severe depression, attempting to treat their symptoms with St. John’s wort can lead to a worsening of their mental health, and may lead to suicide.
