The Complete Guide to OS X

Mac OS X LogoThe Mac OS is an operating system created by Apple for use on their PCs. Mac OS X is the tenth version, and represents a significant shift away from previous versions of the operating system. Mac OS X is based on NeXTSTEP, a Unix like operating system, and includes new features like the Cocoa API, pre-emptive multitasking, memory protection and the aqua theme. Backwards compatibility with Mac OS 9 is provided with the Carbon API.

A version of OS X is also used on Apples portable devices like the iPad, iPod and iPhone.
