When Arcade Game Were A Quarter

I grew up in the 80’s when arcades were popular and most games were only one quarter to play. Most of the games had a joystick and one or two buttons. None of this 10 button-three finger combo, like what’s needed in games of today. Many of these games are now showing up in iTunes with a new “Remix” version. Here’s some you might want to download to bring back the arcade to your iPod:

PAC-MAN, Ms. PAC-MAN, PAC-MAN REMIX If you like Pac-Man iTunes has you covered. You can download the classic/original game, his female counterpart (my favorite of the three), or a more modern remake of the original in the “Remix.” The controls on all three of these game is a little clunky and takes some getting used to, but I still like them.

Galaga REMIX Play the original Galaga or a new modern and faster version in this release. I still favor the original, but the new version is fun.

Dig Dug REMIX Dig Dug was one of my favorite games growing up. I blew a lot of quarters on this one. The iPod version is not the best. The controls are very hard to get used to and very clunky.

Pole Position: Remix Another Remix from Namco. I tried the demo or lite version. It was fun. Nothing special, at least not to me. It is like the original with updated graphics.

SPACE INVADERS, Space Invaders Infinity Gene There’s Pac-Man and then there is Space Invaders when it comes to retro gaming. With these two choices you get the classic game or an updated version in Infinity Gene. I have read the new version is fantastic. I want to try it, but haven’t decided to plunk $5 down on it yet.

ARKANOID This is one of my favorite games of all time. There are plenty of Akanoid wannabes in iTunes, but none are the original. This is the original with some updates. Out of all the Arkanoid style games this has the best control scheme, and of course- it’s Arkanoid!

I’m sure there have to be other retro games in the App Store. There might even be a few that I know of and I am forgetting them, and I’m sure there are more to come in the future. I’m hoping for Berzerk and Zaxxon! Even if there aren’t these ones yet, there are plenty of games to load your iPod Touch with nostalgia.
