Combat Arms. The Best Free First-Person Shooter?

We take a look at Nexon's latest addition to their free game list: Combat Arms. This game is more than any free game could be and by the looks of it, could have made a killing by today's graphics standard. Read on for more info on the best free FPS to date (Org. Published Aug 2008).

Review of Combat Arms: Free to Play FPS

Combat Arms cover In the video game industry today, we look for a game with the best graphics and the best gameplay. There are some major contenders who bring home the bacon with a combination of both but there are many companies who are lacking it all.

Nexon America, a sister company to Nexon Korea, has released their latest game called Combat Arms. With many free games on their list, how can a small company who makes their money with item shops possibly make a game where it combines depth, action, and sheer fluidity to a game and still be free? No one knows the answer, nor is it ever asked and it shouldn't. Combat Arms definitely does deliver what all FPS gamers need and shows potential with where it can go.

Getting Started

You start the game with a basic setup. You choose how your soldier looks and then name him. Where it gets tricky is the weapons you start with. They consider the M16A1 Automatic rifle to be the weakest by today's standards and therefore offer it as its "free" weapon. You also start with standard military issue camo and a combat knife as well as some basic frag grenades.

As for now, customization is very limited but the developers have stated that you will be able to "purchase" looks in the future, which leads me to the best part. EVERY gun, grenade, armor vest, helmet, uniform, or anything else that can be used to punish your enemies will never EVER cost you any real life money. That's right. You can be just as powerful as the highest killer on the servers and never have spent a penny. The ingame money, known as GP, is what you use to buy your gear with and is only earned by winning matches. Depending on how many kills you get determines what place you come in on the leaderboards for that match and thus, determines how much experience and GP you earn.

Experience

Experience? Why is there experience points in an FPS? Actually, this is nothing new. In the Battlefield games, your soldier earns experience to unlock weapons and to earn rank. The same is true in Combat Arms. You earn rank to unlock certain weapons and gear. You also have to be a certain rank to join a clan and start one. This leaves an incentive to playing the game and really pushes the player to rank up instead of creating multiple accounts.

There is also a KDR (Kill/Death Ratio) which is available for all players to see. Naturally, the higher your KDR is, the better you look to other players, and believe it or not, determines whether opposing clans will fight you in clan matches or even play in the same match with you in normal matches. Rank does not determine how good a player is however. Rank is merely an indication on how much that player has played and there are definitely some people on there with a rank so high that it looks as if they have no life. Which is probably true.

Awful Game
This game is awful & a waste of time. For all of the people that think this game is great, go spend 30-40$ and go buy an actual shooting game. This game simply caters to hackers and people who pay for better guns. If you go into a game as a level1, you will be lucky to get a kill against people who have overpowered 1-hit sniper rifles and ARs that kill you in 2-3 shots, where as your shitty m16 can't kill anything w/o a lucky headshot. I highly recommend not even bothering with this crapfest and just going out and buying an actual shooter.

Oh shut up.
I play all day evory day (not realy) but when you get out of the starting suver and into BROVO suver there are E mods that kick all hackers. NX guns are not over powerd its easy to stop a guy with a minigun or a m32 with a m16 if you know whut your doing. all the nx guns have gp verints that are just as good if you get good. geting rid of glitches and hacks is not that easy btw so stop crying over it. name one free to play game with no hacks, or glitches and whut not. theres hackers and glitchis in cod you know. alot of them 2. and who cars if you get killed throw a wall or someone has a knife that 1 hit kills or enny of that stuff. its still fun trying to get a kill if you think of it in the right way :D. ( i cant spell get over it)

Wow . Some really negative things said about CA here. Its actually a fantastic game. Addictive and totally awesome.

The graphics are amazing if you've got a system that can handle in with all the settings on high.

The weapon selection is off the hook and there are plenty of options to customize your character.

As for the hackers that everyone complains about, they normally get kicked pretty quick if its a good bunch of players in the room. If not then just change rooms. Theres heaps of rooms and doesn't take long to find one with legit players. Or just open a private room with just your friends. Easy.

This game is free and I've always remained competitive without paying for anything.

Combat Arms is one of the best if not THE best 1st person online game. It's definately THE best free online game out there.

With around 30 maps and zombie modes as well this game is one of the best PC games around and I play all the time. I've converted all my mates that have computers too and they love it.

Even the sound effects are awsome.

97/100.

elite moderation
i also forgot about this... TERRIBLE IDEA. i cant tell you how many times ive been kicked simply for doing good. hell... even when there are no elite moderators... the voting things is terrible. not only does it take your mind off the game, and put your character in danger... but if there are 3 or 4 people who dont like that you are doing good.... sry, you are booted.

fun for a free game.
i played this game for 2 weeks. i put ... probably 20 hours into it? something along those lines. i found a couple things wrong with it. firstly... the hackers/glitchers whatever.... horrible. when 2 out of 3 games you walk into have somebody spinning in a circle shooting randomly with auto aim on, killing everybody with headshots..... and btw, in free for all, they cant even be booted. half the time, you dont even know you are in the room with a hacker, until the VERY end, then turn up the hax, and blow everybody's head off, winning the game before they can be booted.

so, number 1 issue: hackers.

secondly... one shot to the head is a kill. usually. regardless of the weapon. but it takes around 8-10 shots, average, to the chest to kill somebody. sounds.... unbalanced. and it is. to be sure. most snipers are 1 shot kill anywhere on the body... pistols.... well, they are worthless. as is melee. the only way you are going to kill somebody with pistols or melee is if you are both literally standing still. i played a pistol match today.... most fights between 2 people last for 2 full clips or more, simply because they are entirely underpowered.

in furious battles, often you are running and gunning. you only get a reflex/red dot at high lvls, and you dont have time to use the acog or regular scope.... and without something to focus your fire, its like trying to hit somebody with a revolutionary period musket. aiming right at them, after any more than 2 or 3 consecutive bullets, you arent going to hit them. good luck @.@

the nutshots/headshots are very satisfying... but rare. you can be aiming right at their head, like i said before, and if its not the first bullet out of the gun, you arent getting a headshot. you are just spraying bullets like a water sprinkler on the end of a hose.

elite mod noobs
one thing worth mentioning is the addition of elite moderator items, many rooms now have elite moderators an item paid for with real world cash. One of the worst introductions to any game, if you decide to play combat arms and become good you will now be kicked from every room you enter ENJOY THE NOOBISHNESS

Just saying, Alexandra, this review was written when Combat Arms was first released, and therefore does not include info about the Black Market because it didn't exist back then.

Combat Arms
While Combat Arms is a pretty good game there are some things glanced over by this review. Mainly, how key real money can be in getting some weapons and their customer service.

First of all, as others have mentioned everything in the game as far as weapons and gear is NOT available for free. The most powerful guns in the game are reserved for "specialists" a class of characters that are mainly purchased with cash. There is a free counterpart, but they are insanely expensive and for high ranked players. After a year of play I've only unlocked them in the last month. These players are equipped with things like miniguns and grenade launchers that are easily capable of taking out your entire team in close quarters.

The other problem not mentioned is customer service. Nexon is horrible at this. If you have a game error that needs fixing, don't expect to get a reply in the next 2-4 weeks if you get one at all. They use a slow ticket system that rarely responds to complaints and there is no other way of contacting GMs.

They are also notorious for making new content to distract players from the fact that they are slow to fix game issues like hacks and glitches. A patch is released once a month, but hacks are usually only patched about once every 2-3 months, seemingly only when people start threatening to quit en masse on the forums or boycott real money purchases. The problem is, Nexon's rate of patching the game is far less than updates hack companies release. So by the time they fix one hack, there is already a new version of it in existence.

But the game has huge potential and if the right members got on board I have no doubt that it would be one of the top games ever created. If you play it smart and leave the rooms when the hacks come out to play you can definitely have a great time playing this game.

Free to play, Pay to win
From a technical standpoint, the game might be the best game ever. But several things (including its money-making model) block it from achieving that goal.

Do not be fooled by the statements about equal capabilities. Unless you pay, and pay a lot (often over $100) you will always be at a disadvantage. Even those who only spend $20-50 in the game will still be at a disadvantage.

It is extremely hard to earn enough GP (in-game money) to afford weapons and gear for the day. The only way to do so is to either play many hours in one day or not at all. If you are a casual player, stay away from it.

You will also be facing hackers and those who paid a lot in cash so that they could have overwhelming weapons, armor and speed.

Finally, the company uses questionable bait-and-switch tactics. To attract people to buy game-money (NX) with cash, they make their 'fairly hacker-free' Black Market server available to those who bought NX, only to take it away a few months later.

The moral of the story is... you can play for free and even make it interesting. But you have to work at it and that is not good enough for the average player.

And never assume that if you spend money for something in this game you'll get to keep it.

Hacker's Dream Heaven
There are so many hackers and glitch abusers NEXON does really nothing to stop them. There are no admins to keep track of them too. There is very little originality too. NX users get so much stuff it unfair. Why dont they make a non NX server???????????

Hacker Friendly, Money Grabbing
This company makes no effort to control or get rid of the hacker problem. 95% of matches have 1 or more people who either download/buy VIP hacks or use game glitches to their advantage.

Nexon's "effort" to help players rid themselves of hackers was to introduce the Elite Mod function. Elite Mods can kick anyone they suspect of hacking or whatever, HOWEVER players HAVE to PAY out of their OWN pockets in order to benefit from this feature. To add, hackers have already introduced the "anti-kick'' hack to make this feature useless.

In short, pass this game. While the gameplay and features are nice, the company turns a blind eye to hackers in order to make a quick buck.

Until they start caring about customers, and dealing with the hacker problem, you will find a better product and company ELSEWHERE.

Pass this game up. Hacker haven.
This game is absolutely over run with hackers. Nexon is doing nothing to address it. Go ahead and play it, but I strongly advise you to never spend money on their black market. The level of hacking is so bad that the game is unplayable and your purchases will expire while you sit and wait for them to fix it. Nexon is a fraud. Stay away!!!

You forgot to mention the clan aspect
One of my favorite parts of combat arms is the clan aspect. There are several styles of clans around highly competitive clans that compete for top clan of the year awards. Crazy clans that are just looking to hack and glitch the game to beat others. Then there are fun clans. I've been in all three and finally stuck with a fun clan called Black Arrows. we have a website http://www.clan-blackarrows.com and use ventrillo to coordinate and use in game strategy. Most importantly is we are aged from 30 and under so its alot of kid at hearts are actually in school kids. This keeps us young and fun. I encourage any to give this game a try and find a clan it enhances the game by tenfold.

Additional Note
I would also like to note that, contrary to what Rovelius claims, it is not hard at all to have enough in-game money to purchase weapons consistently.

Response to Dave
I have played Combat Arms since the week after it came out and can confirm that it is indeed a fantastic game. I would, however, like to respond to something Dave said-

"Nexon has introduced several characters (with unique equipment) that are ONLY purchasable with NX (1000 NX = US$1) and weapons that only they can use which are ONLY purchasable with NX."

This is completely untrue. The Specialists- the characters of which he is speaking- are also purchasable with in-game currency at higher ranks. No equipment in the cash shop is truly unbalanced or unavailable in some form to those who opt not to pay (the one exception to this is a mercenary who uses a unique armor vest; however, it does not provide a large advantage and will be released for free shortly) and it is still just as likely that someone who doesn't pay will win as it is likely that someone who does purchase equipment will.

Combat Arms
I play Combat Arms daily it's fine except for lag and the occational server problems and of course hackers
Rovelius Aug 26, 2009 10:32 PM
What a noob review.
I'll just say this : I used to play this game for about 6 hours a day, constantly pulling off scores of about 80 kills/15 deaths and I could never afford buying all my stuff back when the time ran out. You forgot to mention this VERY IMPORTANT FACT because, after a while, you're simply stuck with none other choice than pay real money to keep playing. Either that or start another character.
Dave Jul 12, 2009 7:28 AM
Combat Arms review
I have to add some addenda to this paean to Combat Arms. Nexon has introduced several characters (with unique equipment) that are ONLY purchasable with NX (1000 NX = US$1) and weapons that only they can use which are ONLY purchasable with NX. So their promise of not having to buy anything is not exactly true. In addition, there is a feature which allows for the ejection of disruptive or obviously hacking players. However, this is also ONLY purchasable with real money. I know the game is free and they gotta make a buck (or Won as the case may be) but it seems that they made the game good enough to be playable but they don't care about the experience overall which will keep you coming back. Maybe they hope you will become so annoyed that you'll buy a feature to make the game fair, but this could easily be cured with better anti-hack software. Based on playing for a week or so, I figure 25 - 35% of games have one hacker or player who is suspiciously good given their rank. I'm on the tipping point of whether I'll continue to play. It certainly hasn't pulled me in like CS or QW:ET. I guess in the end, you get what you pay for.

Combat arms
Falling through the world and knifing all players is a hack, NOT a glitch. Just saying. As for the lag it depends on the host, the majority of things fall on the shoulders of them when it comes to how smoothly a given room is. (Although the game server(s) are a factor as well)
