One of the most well known games of the decade, Roller Coaster Tycoon gives an opportunity to the player to control a series of parks, each park with an open ended but with a limited numbers of rides, but beside making an analysis to the game we are going to make a small historic overview about the impact of the game in the popular culture.

An overview to RCT

The boom the God-Management games came in 1985 after the release of Little Computer People in the year 1985, giving to the players a new perspective about gaming and simulations. We can say the Little Computer People was the father of modern games such as Sim City and the Tycoon Series, because Little Computer People gave the idea to new developers about the endless possibilities about this simulation games.

On March 31 of 1999, Roller Coaster Tycoon appeared for the first time in the market and although the game was a novelty for is time it didn’t caused a positive impact in the market at first, but after a few webpages like Gamespot started to mention Roller Coaster Tycoon the luck of the game changed and became one of the best selling P.C. games ever.

The main idea of the game, as every management game is to give to the player the role of the manager and handling the finances of the scenario, I know is a cold opening to an article but I found it practical so the potential buyer of the game will know about the game thematic, but there is a quirk with the Roller Coaster Tycoon games, that beside managing the finances of the park you also can test the rides and with the third game you ride the rides and see what your guests see of the rides you constructed.

The idea of this management games is not new, there are been other famous games such as Theme Hospital; and, an antecessor of Tycoon, Theme Park, one of the most famous games made the producer Bullfrog where you took control over a theme park but it was more limited in the terms of construction of the rides, an aspect that was greatly improved in the development of the Tycoon games, also with the Tycoon games the game play was greatly improved, giving to the players, easy alternatives to manage the parks and rides.

The games themselves had evolved, but mostly minor improves, such as a change in the view from isometric to a 3-D view and the opportunity to ride the rides with the third game, I have to admit that option of ride the rides is really interesting, due the reason you can see what you have built and seeing your guests enjoying your rides or hating them, also a minor review was that the guest eventually had names, more detailed faces and genres.

The game was programmed, developed and designed by Chris Sawyer, Simon Foster did the art for the game, and Allister Brimble composed the musical score. The game at first was a sleeper who gained some notoriety and later fame after it was reviewed by some WebPages and magazines and then player started to buy it due the positive reviews, originally the first two game where published by Hasbro Interactive, who later they sold the franchise to Atari. Due the high sells of the game, the creator Chris Sawyer received an approximately US$30 Million Dollars in royalties, and the first game was said to be as one of the most successful games of all times as well as the most successful game of the Management genre.
