EverQuest 2 is a fantasy MMORPG that was released November 8, 2004. It is the sequel to Sony's popular, ground breaking MMORPG EverQuest. While it has been overshadowed by World of Warcraft (released November 23, 2004), it still boasts a couple hundred thousand subscribers and an active community.
Compared to World of Warcraft, EverQuest 2 is more about variety in game play options than simply killing the next monster for the next gear upgrade. Unlike World of Warcraft, EverQuest 2 has a robust, skill based crafting system (player skill as well as character skill in a mini-game like crafting interface) and very expansive guild and player housing. This gives EverQuest 2 a very different playing experience than World of Warcraft. While both games have raiding, raids are not the dominant focus of EverQuest 2 like they are in World of Warcraft.
EverQuest 2 has released numerous paid expansions and smaller adventure packs since its initial launch. Its next expansion, The Shadow Odyssey, is scheduled for November 18, 2008. A summer special "The Living Legacy" was run in Summer 2008 that gave all previously existing expansion and adventure packs away for free to all new and returning customers. This promotion also included a free subscription for the months of June and July 2008.
