Mount & Blade: Warband Rise to the Throne Guide Part 2

Updated May 20, 2011

This is the final part of our Mount & Blade: Warband Guide. It offers hints and tips to help you establish your very own faction.

Create a Faction

We have established the basic process of how to create your own faction. In simple terms you simply have to seize a town or city as an independent. The problem is keeping your empire and avoiding a crushing attack from the other factions. Obviously you have to be levelled up, kitted out and in command of a large, well trained army. Making friends will also help because there is a greater chance that other lords will stay neutral when you rebel. Now we’ll have a look at recruiting lords, marrying ladies and increasing your Right to Rule.

Recruiting Lords

Mount and Blade Warband Map

You can also improve your chances of victory by recruiting lords to your cause. This will make your faction more powerful but it will also decrease your chances of grabbing land for yourself. If you persuade a lord to defect or you make a companion into a vassal you will need to grant them lands of their own to keep them happy. If you make a companion into a vassal make sure they are levelled up with good armour and weaponry first because you won’t be able to change it afterwards.

You’ll need to talk to them in private if you want to recruit them. Make sure that you have a decent relationship before you broach the subject so as to avoid trouble. You can also question the competency of the current king and suggest you would do a better job. It is a smart idea to survey the scene before making any moves and make sure you approach the disaffected lords.

You can find out the situation by observing messages, talking to lords and ladies and sending your companions to gather intelligence. It is important you recruit lords and promote companions with similar ideas or you’ll end up with a hopeless kingdom.

Marriage

Mount and Blade Warband Marriage

Another new option in Mount & Blade: Warband is to woo a lady with poetry and marry her. You can do it in secret or you can get her father’s permission (sometimes brother). It takes several visits to worm your way into a bedchamber and it’s not a good idea to rush. You can learn poems in taverns and there seems to be a limit of five in total.

The benefit of marriage is that it gives you the ability to hold feasts and increase your standing. It also brings you closer to the family, provided the marriage was sanctioned. Be warned though, if you elope and marry without the permission of the male relative then you’ll be making an enemy for life.

In order to meet eligible ladies you should win tournaments and then visit the feast and dedicate the tournament win to the lady you fancy. Once you declare an interest you’ll get summons occasionally or you can go to the city where the lady resides and you’ll see Attempt to visit a lady as a new menu option. When the relationship gets advanced enough and you’ve tried out all your poems on her you can pop the question.

Right to Rule

Mount and Blade Warband King

An important new concept in Mount & Blade: Warband is Right to Rule. You can check your Right to Rule rating in your Character Report. When you think you are ready to create your own faction you should start to build up this rating by talking to your companions and telling them you want to be king. You’ll get an option to send them out on missions. Each of your companions will have a different idea about how to improve your chances of becoming king. You’ll only be able to send one or two at a time and they’ll be away from your party for a few days while they complete the mission. Each time they return your Right to Rule will increase by 3.

If your Right to Rule rating is too low and you try to start your own faction you can expect serious opposition from all factions because they’ll regard you as a rebel bandit. To be taken seriously you have to have a good rating in terms of renown, honor and Right to Rule (just over 50 worked for me).

Making Peace

You can’t afford to be at war with everyone so you’ll want to make peace with some factions. If you are on friendly terms and you have a good standing in Calradia then you should be able to get peace. You can also use your companions as diplomats for your cause and send them to visit factions in an attempt to get treaties. You can do this by talking to your minister and asking him to dispatch an emissary. You want to send someone in your party with good persuasion skills to increase your chances of success.

Don’t be Controversial

There are various things that will make your standing suffer and so you must avoid them if you want to be taken seriously as a king. If you have a high Controversy rating you run the risk of incurring the wrath of everyone. You can check your Controversy by selecting Notes then Characters.

  • Always make sure you take care of your lands. If you don’t protect them and develop them your reputation will suffer.
  • Be careful who you make into a vassal. Some lords will get upset and outraged if you grant status to a commoner. You can afford to promote companions like Alayen because they are of noble blood.
  • Get permission for your love affairs. If you sneak around behind the backs of male relatives or worse elope with a lady then you’ll anger people.

Build a Solid Foundation

Mount and Blade Warband Siege
The gold doesn’t always flow very easily and since you’ll be engaged in major warfare when you begin a new faction you’ll want a solid financial base behind you. It is ideal if the first target you take is rich. It is also a good idea to target the weakest faction and scoop up their lands as quickly as possible.

Remember that in order to attack a faction you need to have a negative relationship with them.

If you plan well you should be ruling an empire in no time. If you have any suggestions for good tactics to use then please post a comment.

@JJ King of calradia
Well, if everyone listens to you, and all lands belong to you, then you are ruler.
If your nation is a kingdom, then you are king.
If it's an empire, then you are emperor. it's just a title. the important part is, are you ruler?
If you are ruler and you name your realm "kingdom of calradia" and rename yourself to "king john" then you are King john, king of the kingdom of calradia, or simply, king of calradia.

conquering your first castle
conquering a castle is relatively easy cuz there are around 100 troops usually in it, so my suggestion nord huscalrs and some good archers, but problem comes when faction decides to take over your castle. They will group all vassals of their kingdom and attack your castle. That is 500-700 troops attacking you. Only God can help you then

King of Calradia
Hey All,

So I rode with Swadia for a long time, built up trust with vassals, got married and a large renown. Now I have destroyed every faction after creating my own, have recruited many vassals to my side and my faction controls EVERY castle and town and village. My question is: AM I THE KING OF CALRADIA?!!! Nothing ever told me OFFICIALLY or crowned me. Do i just assume? Thanks!

How help town:much ways

3-helping the merchant
4- being winner of tournament of the town

later of get a good number of soldiers in your party, a good recknow and a good fight wons number, u can ask to be one lord of that helm, if king agree, you only need repeat the words that him say, otherwise you need fight againts the enemys of the choosen kingdom, to win the respect of the kingdom .

RE-em wow,help
To do a party member become a lord you need : the member and fields,if you have one town you only can give the villages ,cus cannot change the king, when you have the field ,go to the party member choosen and click at talk -then will have option- i want ask you one thing... then there will apear a option:would u will like hold a fief? the vassal will ask what field, then u choose, then him will out of your group, changing of a squire to a lord of someplace, and then him will starts him own group ,but ovilious ,in your kingdom,but... if u do much lords the first´s one´s will being angry and will lose some part of respect per you, when reach at a low point, normaly they leave your army or group, and i think with the field that you gave, then choose the corrects, one good way to be rich its:accept merchant quest, then go to arena and ask where will be tournaments
then go to tournament city and if u are a good fighter u can bet all, at end of tournament u will win 200 denars how reward,200 exp i think, some reputation, and 3970 denars from cleaver bets, well i pray to i helped much, and remember, the good king isn´t the killer and destroyer, but the strong and protector.

Here's a tip for quick first town when you first become a king
If you decide to become a vassal and get city's while you are a vassal for a king and then decide to rebel and become a king yourself it is a good idea to empty the garrison of all your city's (just disperse the troops you don't want and keep the best). That way you wont even have to fight to get those city's, you'll just besiege and then it'll be yours. Did that in the first game with the whole rebel thing and it worked, haven't tried it on this one yet but don't really see how it couldn't work.

Hello, I can get a book to read and so obter poetry to woo a lady, I hope to answer please:)
shorun Nov 9, 2010 12:25 AM
being a king
the best hint i can give you are a few really
take your time to please your lords, and organize feasts to keep them happy.

you cannot EVER take over an existing faction, you cannot become king of the nords, or sultan. and the kings, like any lords and yourself don't die, so don't wait for that to happen.

if you chose rebellion it won't be your faction, but you will be marchall for life.

if you don't like peace/politics, don't try being a king, it's not about war. but the wars you fight will be more intense, since you can't back off as a king.

be patient, be observant, be king, be honorable, but most of all, USE DIPLOMACY MOD!!!! :)

RE: Mount & Blade: Warband Rise to the Throne Guide Part 2
You can't become king of an existing faction you have to start your own faction to become king.

@kimnguyen you are best being a vassal for a while, build up your party, your xp, cash and equipment and your right to rule before you strike out on your own or you'll get slaughtered.
kimnguyen Oct 30, 2010 6:43 AM
hey clint
your idea of taking all of the guards out of the castle and then release the oath with the king was pretty good. i think i'll try that later on. LOL:D
kimnguyen Oct 30, 2010 6:41 AM
Hey Simon
I just started a new game on Kingdom of Rhodoks. Should I become a vassal for a little while and then release the oath with the king or should i just stay like a normal person with a party and don't interfere with any wars until I get some land of my own and let my companions have them. Which do you think is better? If I don't become a vassal, how would I get any land then? Tell me the answer quickly if possible. A.S.A.P :D Thnx.

An error on the world map notes.
Hi, anyone know this error in the world map notes? They are all in red writing:

SCRIPT ERROR ON OPCODE 521: Invalid_Party_ID: -1;LINE NO:361:
At script: npc_decision_checklist_party_ai,
At script: npc_decision_checklist_party_ai,

It comes up twice when any new info came up. I have no idea why they come up like that on the notes and if anyone know it, how do you get rid of it. It comes up everytime a new note comes up like: the prosperity of Bhulaban has changed from Average to Rich or Ismarala castle has been besieged by Boyar Ralcha or something like that. I think the cause of this is because of the cheat: Hold down Ctrl and press anywhere on the world map to move there instantly. I think it is though.

I'm the marshal of Nord! I have wife lady Endigrid daughter of Arl Turia. Can I bacome the king of Nord?
kimnguyen Oct 26, 2010 6:36 AM
Can I marry two or more wives?
I have married Lady Akilina daughter of Boyar Ralcha of Kingdom of Vaegirs. Sometimes when I speak with the other Boyars, a new option comes up like"I ask again: may i have the opportunity to see your daughter Lady ....". If I do that and marry her, will my old wife "Lady Akilina" get angry or jealous or anything like that?
the king Sep 5, 2010 12:44 PM
what i did
what i did was i started of as king almost when i started the game becouse i had to fight so much i got better at the game and eventuly i got a high renown and a high right to rule and befor i knew it i owned all of the nords and swadiens and i had 12 lords working for me and an army of 234 soldiers i am very rich and i did not cheat at all you should try what i did and youll be a powerfull king in just 3 days!!!
Clint Sep 3, 2010 11:22 AM
Time it Right.
The way i did it was to work for one of the factions first as a Vassel, i managed to get 2 castles and a few villages and build up cash from rent (and cheap guards since i had other lords to help guard them)

Then, i pulled all the guards into my army and revoked my vasselage, losing the castles in the process, but with no gaurds it was simple to take them back and use them as a first base.
I did this while my faction was at war with 3 other people, they were far too busy with the big guys to care about losing 2 undefended castles and i just raided for a while until i had some good lords and armies, then struck their cities while they were weak.
Now i own like 5 cities and 8 castles, Got 10 lords too :)
It's pretty sweet.
LORD MEHMOOD PASHA Aug 25, 2010 9:41 PM
Transformation of a faction into your own.
Ok im currently a vassal of the sarranid sultanate i have a right to rule of 99(which is the highest number on the scale) my honor rating is over 1000 and my renown is over 4000(which is twice that of the current monarchs) so lets say when sultan hakim dies, hopefully soon and i am named the new sultan can i change the name and banner of the sarranid sultanate faction? like from sarranid sultanate to mamluke emirate or heck from sarranid sultanate to The Ottoman Empire? also is it possible for me to start a rebelion and goverment takeover of my own to place myself on the throne should i become too restless waiting for sultan hakim to die? quote" not helping out one of the claiments to the throne of the faction, i mean my own rebelion and goverment take over for ME.

governing your kingdom
It's really hard to take care of your kingdom, every five seconds someones attacking a castle or raiding a village and i just can't keep track of it all.
By the way is it possible to change your name?

Recruiting Party to Lords
How do you recruit members of your party to become lords and own land?
I took over Khergits land and i was friendly with Vaegirs. I used a cheat to upgrade my men so i had 350 lancers and 200 Vaegir Knights. But i also left lots of archers at m keep :)

balance
the first step on making your own kingdom is easy, hard part is after you take your first settlement, recuiting too much soldier will cause you to lost money while having less soldier than required will end your kingdom dreams in a short period

marriage for a male
Same idea you ask a male that you have high enough relation with and has no wife "what would it take to cement a lasting alliance to your house" you get the option of something like i could marry you or something like that
shorun Jun 4, 2010 9:03 AM
reply to becomming king
for one, you MUST have right to rule above 20 or you will be invaded by EVERYONE, once you have juicy lands that is.
NEVER give to many fiefs to a single lord, no matter where he came from, if they constantly walk around between their castles then they wil not patrol/fight/campaign.
be verry carefull who you recruit, chose a single-minded group of vassals, preferably all honorable, never capture enemy lords exept for kings/sultans etc. you need the honor!
keep the city's for yourself, give the castles/towns to vassals. spread out your vassals but not to hard, hunt down the bandit camps (!!!!) and if you've done all that, you can live the life of a king and do pritty much whatever you want.
allso, organizing feasts in towns will generate mass tournaments, great sources of income/valor
