Mount & Blade: Warband Rise to the Throne Guide Part 1

In Mount & Blade: Warband you can become a king. In this two part guide we offer up some hints and tips to help you on your way.

Kingmaker

So far we have looked at the multiplayer side of the game and discussed weaponry, armour and horses. Now it is time to turn our eyes towards the throne. One of the most exciting new developments in Mount & Blade: Warband is the ability to strike out on your own. You can now carve out your own kingdom and make your companions into vassals by granting them lands.

It was technically possible to create your own rebel kingdom in the original Mount & Blade but it was never really intended to be played that way. In Warband there is an all new political system which allows you to engage in political intrigue, build up your right to rule, marry, create vassals and persuade lords to defect.

In order to get into a position where you can strike out on your own you’ll need to develop your character, whip your army into shape and work on building some relationships. If you want to be recognised as a King your plan should be slow and methodical or you’ll be crushed as rebel scum.

In the Beginning

You’ll kick off the game as a lone adventurer and the start you get in Calradia will depend on what options you decided to select when Creating your Mount & Blade Character.

In Warband you are given a mission to help you get started. This is a good gentle introduction and for the early part of the game you should take on missions for city guilds and lords to build up some cash and experience. You should also attack small groups of bandits. Don't take on deserters though, because they tend to be very well equipped, and at the start of the game you won't be. You can also build up some skills and make a little cash by fighting in the arenas in the cities.

As you get tougher and start to make some money you can upgrade your gear. As well as upgrading your own armour and weapons make sure you remember to kit out your companions.

Train Up and Recruit

Your main focus should be to build up your character and your party. You’ll want to recruit companions from the taverns and hire raw recruits at villages. Training up raw recruits is much cheaper than hiring the finished article in a tavern so avoid the groups of mercenaries. The individual companion characters, on the other hand, are an essential part of your force so seek them out. If you hire all of them you’ll find that they argue so try to select a balanced group and eject troublemakers.

This Mount & Blade Guide to Recruiting and Commanding an Army is still valid for Warband.

Paying Homage

You don’t strictly need to become a vassal but it would be very tough to go straight from adventurer to King. Decide which of the factions you’d like to be a part of and concentrate on doing missions for them (particularly for the King of your chosen faction). You need to Build up your Renown and eventually as it grows the factions will attempt to sign you up. Alternatively you can build your renown up and then go direct to the King and ask to join his faction.

Making Gold

Money makes the world go round and you need a decent bankroll to succeed in Calradia. If you build up debts it will have a negative effect on your standing and your party morale will dip. You will make some money from any possessions you have. The King of your chosen faction will generally grant you a small village as an introduction and if you take castles and cities thereafter he may award you more lands. The tax income is now delivered directly to you but you’ll need to build mills and protect your possessions in order to make them profitable.

Mount and Blade Warband Tournament Win
The most lucrative way to spend your time is to travel around taking part in tournaments. We’ll discuss the other benefits later but if you make sure to bet on yourself, the maximum 100 for each round, then you’ll come away with a tidy sum (usually just under 4,000) assuming you win.

You can also take on various missions to make cash and of course you’ll get loot (which can be sold) every time you defeat an enemy force.

Making Friends

You need to build up your honor rating and keep your controversy low to make friends. It will come in very handy later if you have some lords onside. It is possible to persuade lords to join your faction and support you as king. You’ll need to build strong friendships if you want to do this. You’ll also want to avoid war with everyone when you do declare your new faction, so being friendly with at least one faction is a very good idea.

Planning Ahead

You’ll increase your chances of success by planning ahead carefully. Think about what territory you might want to claim when you first strike out. Try to choose somewhere next to the faction you are friendly with so that you don’t get attacked from all sides. This may also have the side benefit of giving you some protection, especially if they are engaged in a war with your enemy.

It will also be easier to take border castles because they will probably have been fought over before. This means they are the most likely to be poorly defended. Scope out the area and scout thoroughly before you actually attack.

Declaring Independence

The act of setting up your faction in Mount and Blade: Warband is actually very simple. All you need to do is attack and take a castle or city without being tied to a faction. Renounce your oath to the faction you’re with, bear in mind that you will lose your lands. Now attack a new city or castle and when you take it you’ll get the chance to set up your new faction. You can choose a name and a banner.

The hard part is holding on to your new found empire. You can drastically improve your chances in this regard by paying attention to a rating that we’ll discuss in the next part of this guide – Right to Rule.

become a king
I was vassal of king Harlaus. He had granted me 3 cities and 2 castles and 1 village. when I took over Wercheg he wouldn't give it to me so I took it for myself and started a kingdom but i didn't lose anything except for the village. I was automatically at war with swadia and that's not nice because they're the best faction in game

I would suggest to all of you, when you begin your own war to create a kingdom, select a Khergit town or castle to besiege.
They may be strong at open fields, but at defending or besieging a town, they are possibly the weakest.

I started my war by attacking Halmar, 320 defenders, my party counted 78 soldiers. I had about 20 Nord Huscarls and placed them at the top of my party to rush the walls at first. At the end I captured on of the richest towns and lost ~10 units.
With the remaining party (Huscarls, Vaegir Marksmen and Sharpshooters) I defended Halmar two times against the united Khergit army, app. 600 units.

Yeah you'll lose your lands when you release the oath but you have to take lands in your own name to create a kingdom and award things to your companions. Gather all of your troops and take them out of the castles and whatever else you hold then break the oath. If you then get on bad terms with your previous kingdom you can probably pick the lands up again easily because they won't be well defended.

Attention SImon Hill
Do you mean release the oath with the king, when I release the oath with the king. When I release the oath, am I going to lose all of my lands? If yes, how can I get it back? After I release the oath, can I give my companions castles and lands?

nabeel ahmed - your minister should be in the court of your capital, just go into the court and look for him.

kimnguyen - sounds like you need to renounce your oath to the Vaegirs (however you will lose the lands you hold) once you are independent you can make vassals, you can also boost right to rule by recruiting lords but it's quite tough to do

Right to rule question?
How can you get over 50 right to rule when you can only tell all of your companion to the mission once "I suppose you know that I aspire to be king of this land". I have 24 right to rule and I don't know how to get more?
kimnguyen Oct 26, 2010 6:26 AM
Why can't I let my companions become a vassal with their own castle?
I'm a vassal of Kingdom of Vaegirs, I have approximately 14 -16 companions but I can't let them become a vassal and have their own castle. All I could see are "How do your feel about the party?", "Tell me your story again." and "Do you have any connections that we could use as advantages?". I have been the marshal and have taken all of Kingdom of Nords. I own Sargoth, Wercheg, Tihr, Sungetche Castle, Tulbuk Castle, Malayurg Castle and all of their villages. But I don't know why I can't let them become vassals. I started another new game on Kingdom of Rhodoks and got Alayen as my first companion. I talked to him and I could ask him if he can have a castle and become a vassal but I just started the game so I don't have anything but a party with 10 people.
Now back to the kingdom of Vaegirs save, the first time I speak to any of my companions, it says"I suppose you know that I aspire to be king of this land?" then I send them out on to that mission and when they come back, I speak to them and it doesn't have that anymore?
nabeel ahmed Oct 26, 2010 4:03 AM
i cant find minister
in game it said ur new minister can be found in your court at nabeel ahmed but where the hell can i find him i need to defect my lords for treason.

Tips on what I should do after the marriage
I just married a lady and I finished holding a feast. What would be the best thing to do after that? How do you make the wife happy? And also, Can you move your wife to another castle of yours because my wife is resting in malayrg castle right next to khergit khanate and if we have war with them, she might die?
kimnguyen Oct 8, 2010 10:29 PM
how to make a tournament in your castle
My male character just married lady akilina and i held a tournament for my wedding party. Do you get a tournament and a feast the next time you hold a feast? Or is it just the feast itself?

"Hometown"
If you go to a castle you own (I know this works when you're king of your own kingdom, not sure about while a vassal), and it is not your 'capital' but you want it to be, there shold be an option to "Shift capitol" or something along those lines.

Ben, when you leave the faction, you're at 0. You must declare war (if you have a minister) or at a minimum, attack a caravan or lord, in order to get a negative -1 or worse rating with them, then you can lay siege to the castles and towns.

@Andrea
You can but first siege an enemy castle. Then when you defeat it, ask that the castle will be awarded to you. IF the king decides to not give it to you you can choose from lots of options of what to do. Once of them is:

Reonounce your oath to the king and hold on to your lands.

Do that 1

Changing capital
It is possible to change capital. You need to own the town/castle for this to work. When you enter the town/castle you want to change your capital to, there is an option for that in the town/castle dialog. You also need to have tools and some other item for this to work.

Don't know if you can switch your capital, I've never tried. I would guess not.

RE: Mount & Blade: Warband Rise to the Throne Guide Part 1
can you switch your home town/castle? I forgot what it's called but im talking about where your advisor stands around to help you take care of your faction. If not, are there any mods that can do that?

RE: Mount & Blade: Warband Rise to the Throne Guide Part 1
You need to have a negative relationship with the faction in order to siege castles. Try fighting one of the lords or attacking a caravan that belongs to that faction.

Stupid Question
Why can't I attack a castle when i leave a faction?
