The RPG has always been one of the strongest and most popular PC genres, and thrives on its complex and story-driven nature. Here the ten best PC RPGs of all time, chosen for their creativity, customizability, and sheer enjoyment factor.

The PC RPG

Of all the PC game genres, the role-playing game is arguably the most sophisticated and certainly the most complex. These are story-driven games that pull you into their unique world, allowing you to create a character all your own and make choices that will affect the game’s progress. Often these games feature many optional sidequests in addition to the main storyline, and include interesting NPCs with their own personalities and backgrounds. And the well-designed RPG is inevitably more ambitious and thoughtful than any other type of game.

But don’t just trust me on this one—test it out for yourself. Here are the top ten RPG games of all time, games sure to impress you with their scope and creativity. Each one is well worth your money, and most have strong re-play value because each time you play you can create a new type of character and experience.

Note: The games on this list have been selected through a combination of research, general consensus, and (inevitably) the author’s own opinion. All have garnered excellent reviews, awards, and so on. But of course, as with any such list, every reader will have his or her opinion as to its validity. Take it for what it’s worth—a suggested top ten list for the purpose of educating the reader about some really cool PC RPGs.

Baldur’s Gate (1998)

This is the oldest entry on the list, and modern gamers might at first be put off by the ancient graphics and gameplay. But like so many older games, Baldur’s Gate is still well worth your time. This is because without fancy graphics all the developers had to rely on was story and customization, and Baldur’s Gate does those things very well. The world is creative and detailed, and there are a lot of options when building and growing your character. The party system is also well done, especially considering the time period. There’s a really good balance here between story and freedom—you have plenty of choices to make, but everything is tied together into an overarching experience. This classic game has survived for a long time, and it continues to be one of the best PC RPGs.

Planescape: Torment (1999)

Like many older RPGs, Planescape is based heavily on a Dungeons & Dragons setting. Combat is less important here than in many newer games—instead the emphasis is entirely on story. As the main character you don’t even know who you really are, so there’s a good mystery element and plenty of suprises. The feel of the game is dark and immersive, with engaging NPCs and a lot of unusual elements. And, of course, there is a high level of customizability. This is not as well known a game as most on this list, and it can be hard at first to get past the ancient graphics. But the rewards far outweigh the frustrations, making this a treat for any RPG fan.

RE: Top Ten PC RPGs of All Time
Have to agree about BAK, it was so good I went out and bought all of R. Feist's Midkemia novels, then replayed it. Also, what about ULTIMA 7, pts 1+2? Many gamers consider those still unrivalled, as far as total immersion in a game world. I mean, having to cut wheat, make flour and bake bread or starve ( a spell helps later ), or else get a job ha ha. And the party system was fantastic, really memorable characters and story. And playable on Windows using the Exult engine! Come to think of it, Ultima Underworld was great also. What gives? Show Lord British some love for all he did for the RPG world!

Betrayal at Krondor is the best CRPG ever made. It's absence is inexcusable. It has the best story of any PC game I've ever played, and even though it's an old game (more than 15 years old), it is still relatively easy to play and isn't hampered by a poor interface like so many older CRPGs are.

Some of mine made it!
Yea, Neverwinter Nights and Baldur's Gate were two of my favorites. I was sad not to see Ice Wind Dale (the first or the second), but Morrowind? I hated being in that open area, there's no guidance. The openness made me feel like I didn't know what I should do first, so I just gave up on it. That's not a way to design a game IMO. Maybe for shooters and what not, but not RPGs.

Pretty nice
I personally haven't played F3 so I don't know if it's the best or the worst, but I gotta say that being better than F1 is very very difficult, that was an amazing game.

Also Arglactable, while Jin park's comment was indeed nonsense to say that J-RPGs haven't changed AT ALL since the 80's is truly ignorant,if you don't like them that's just fine but don't try to imply that they haven't improved in both story and gameplay, they HAVE.

Decent mix of new and old.
Let's be fair here. Oblivion may have been a fantastically detailed and immersive game (well, minus the hilarious compass arrow business), but it's main downside was truly it's BROKEN leveling system (referring to both the way in which your character gains levels and the HORRID idea of changing the enemies and items in game to match your character's strength). The only reason I could justify listing it in a best of list would be that pretty much all of it's blatant flaws were fixed by third party mods. And, really, do gorgeous isometric graphics count as "ancient" now? I guess I'm just behind the times, but I would take Planescape's aesthetics over most modern games any day. It's absolutely majestic.

Also, Jin Park's entire comment is hilarious nonsense. Asian RPGs haven't changed AT ALL since the 80's in any respect other than graphics and sound. Same plots, same characters, same gameplay, same formula that was never particularly interesting to begin with.

Great Review
This is a great review. Fallout 3 was a good game... unfortunately we live in such an error where most ideas have presented itself in one period or another so originality maybe lacking..but disregard all of that and voila. Gees, if Fallout 3 came out in the 1980s.. it would have been the Avitar of the era by far. Having said that every one of the games here is about 15 years behind the Asian world in RPG.. which is inevitable since countries like Korea have over 5000 years of history to play around with, as well as super advanced gaming and web technology. I've seen 1000mbps speed in regular households and RPGs with such details it puts Dragonage to shame.

Anyways~ thanks for the reviews...

From the future~

Mass Effect 2
Unfortunately, Mass Effect 2 made me feel as though I wasn't playing the game as much as the game was playing me. Who ever heard of a Captain of a ship not being allowed to enter the engineering section without authority. Hey!.....Captain here!...duh.

New Heroes on the scene
For me Drakensang: The River of Time is the best RPG. It gave me the very same and intense feelinf of identification and depth as Baldurs Gate did back then.
This intensity of gaming experience I've never experienced again, not in Morrowind, nor in Oblivion, even not in Dragon Age. The world is very full and detailed as they are based on the german pen and paper game The Dark Eye, as Baldur was based on D&D, which in my opinion gave it a certain touch for the enthusiastic RPgamer.
But actually the very best Gaming experience is LARP, my friends. Best graphics, yet the sound is a bit weird at times.

RE: Top Ten PC RPGs of All Time
I agree with anonymous. The gameplay of every Bethesda RPGs is extremely weak. The worlds are incredibly bland, although the graphics are absolutely stunning. I consider Fallout 3 one of the worst games I have ever played. Oblivion and Morrowind had SO much potential but the worlds themselves are generic and lifeless. Mass Effect and Dragon Age I have never played, but Bioware made them and their new RPGs are so dumbed down is embarrassing.

Baldur's gate is miles better than these games simply because the world FEELS alive. It has great atmosphere. The game itself is sometime silly tho. The first five games (at the bottom of the list are good).

People need to play older RPGs.

My short list of great RPGs in no specific order:

Ultima 6 and 7
Wizardry 8
Planescape Torment
Betrayal at Krondor

I've heard great things about Fallout 1 and 2 and Baldur's gate 2 but I have never played them. And older games like eye of the beholder have potential if you can get past the graphics.

yea ok
If you use that big pretty thing in front of you with all the big buttons you can actully use something called the internet to keep up to date as you obvioulsy never leave the house or have friends... Yes Fallout 3 is considered the best of the series by a large margin and for all the reasons you mentioned here. you might as well be saying that ping pong is more popular then football. Dont just criticize somebody elses opinion and then not even have the balls to leave a name.... i look forward to reading your reviews on "The top ten reasons i cant get laid". Nice Review

About Fallout
Yes, well I agree with some titles on you list but what I wanted to point out is that Anonymous disregarding his foul mannerism, is spot on. Fallout 3 is generally considered the worst of the 3 by gamers that have played every title of the series. To not know this and even going as far as claiming the opposite does seem a bit ignorant.

RE: Top Ten PC RPGs of All Time
I'm sorry you feel that way. Every top ten list is different, and the only way to find one you completely agree with is to write it yourself. Leaving nasty comments is hardly the answer (nor is using words like "retarded"). This article is based on both the author's opinion and a comprehensive review of pc gaming sites and online ratings lists.

And yes, I am paid for my articles. Which means I do more research for them, not less.

This review is absolutely retarded.
Oblivion was absolute garbage with a weak gameplay throughout. For someone to say Fallout 3 was the best of the series is to show a truly ignorant journalist. You are obviously paid for your pathetic reviews.
