Dragon Age Origins: Rogues

Playing as a rogue in Dragon Age Origins can be a lot of fun, but it greatly helps if you know which attributes should be focused on in order to get the most out of your rogue. In this article, I’ll discuss where you should spend your most points, and how you can use the rogue’s tactical advantages to deal out massive amounts of damage to even the toughest foes. If you’re unsure about how to equip a rogue, this should help you get started.

Race and Origin

When creating your rogue, you have three choices for race: Human, Elf, and Dwarf. Because this game is not set in the Dungeons & Dragons world, you should put aside all you know about D&D when choosing a race for your character. In this game, any race can be a rogue and there’s not really a penalty one way or the other. Although humans and dwarves get bonuses to strength and dexterity, I decided to be an elf in order to get the magic and willpower bonuses so that I wouldn’t have to spend any more points on them later.

Each race offers a choice between two character origins, and this just makes for a unique beginning to each game as you play through your ‘origin’ story. Other than giving you about an hour’s worth of unique content, your character origin choice will grant you a starting skill that helps jump-start things. Human and dwarf Nobles get Combat Training, City Elves get Coercion, Dalish Elves get Survival, and Dwarf Commoners get Stealing. I chose the Dalish Elves because they leaned more toward being a Ranger, which is what I wanted.

Attributes

Rogues should focus on the following attributes, in order of importance: Dexterity, Cunning, Willpower, Constitution, Strength and Magic.

The most important attribute for a rogue is dexterity. Not only does it help to increase your defensive ability, but it also helps determine your attack score for making a successful hit. If you are using a ranged weapon like a bow, dexterity is the only attribute which contributes to your attack score. Higher dexterity scores also increase the damage done by weapons like daggers, which is mainly what your rogue should carry. Strength should also be given a few points to help with your rogue’s damage and attack scores in case you use other weapons, but when using daggers you should have more points in dexterity than in strength.

Rogues should definitely put a few points in the cunning attribute because that will help them improve some of the rogue talents as well as increase armor penetration. It wouldn’t hurt to invest a point or two in willpower because it affects how much mana or stamina you have, and once your rogue gains higher levels you will use this to do special attacks. Some points in constitution will give your rogue more hit points, but that’s all. With a rogue, there’s really no reason to put any points in magic because you’ll get much more benefit from investing in other attributes.

Skills and Talents

The main skill you should focus on is Combat Training and its subsequent upgrades. Since there is so much combat in this game, building up these skills will be very helpful. Another one to look at is Coercion, which lets you influence others with strength or cunning. This is very helpful at times when you can convince someone to do something for you. Once you gain more levels, you may want to look into Herbalism for making your own health potions, which can save you a lot of money, Poison Making for creating weapon enhancements, and also Trap Making.

For the rogue, talents like Dirty Fighting and Combat Movement are excellent in helping you to deal out more damage to your opponent. You should definitely invest points in these skills because you will use them every time you fight. Another good one to get is Deft Hands, because it lets you pick locks. You will encounter a lot of locked treasure chests in this game, and being able to open them will often yield some great valuables. Stealth is another skill you will use often because it allows rogues to sneak up behind an enemy and get a good backstab in before the fighting starts. It’s great for taking out spellcasters. I also think you should spend points in Dual Weapon Training so you can use two daggers, which can yield devastating results.

Rogue
I just got Dragon age and I have started playing at as a rouge, but I have questions about how to set up my character. What I have been trying to do is split some of my talents between duel weild and archery so that I can fire from far away, but also pull out my daggers when I am fighting up close. Is this possible to create a good build this way? or should I pick one and put all of my talent points towards that?

ROGUE DPS MAX?
Alright, I've beaten Origins many times and just started into Awakening, and My Favorite character is the rogue, mainly becausly he hits so high (Especially w/ backstabs) his damage contribution to the whole party is around 50 - 70% Highest damage hit is around 400 to 500.
Now The build I set up uses mainly all cunning, with the talent lethality it replaces strength, and Cunning combined with the Assassin and Legionare Scout specialization passive abilites deals out huge damage with backstab. The reason I'm on the forum is so if there is a better build, I can find it, so far no other build is standing out. I forgot to mention, I use 2 warden companion longswords (Dragon bone i think) the damage is only like 11.90 on them, But they require no STR so I can put the wasted STR points into Cunning wich gives me that much more Damage with every slash. i'm just trying to search for the best build possible so if there are any Dragon Age Masters out there, please respond to this message or contact my email at Ross_jadon@hotmail.com I play Dragon Age on the ps3. If anyone wants to add me for help or questions etc my psn is Devillusion911

Huh???
I only started playing last week but I immediately know that the advice given here is inappropriate.

It's a freakin' Thief for Pete's sake and you're talking about Combat Training and Strength?!? And you don't mention anything about Traps or Stealing...

I hope the Title is a misprint and you really are talking about Fighters.

Dude! You dont know anything about rogues!
Ok, first let me say that it is not nessasary to have a rouge in your party, but whichever you choose, you must know how to build a rogue, boost cunning to over 50 and dex to over 50, magic is unnessacary(waste of points),willpower is only for longer battles, constitution is not required as long as you boost your tank(allsatir) up with legendary armour because he gets all aggro. strength is not required since there is a skill which replaces strength with cunning, so just keep strength low.

Done with the attributes, not all armour that does not give any bounses, only because it minimizes your fatigue and keeps the aggro off you. Get items with critical strike rating, +cunning, +dex, +willpower, -hostility and +attack, resistance is not nessasacry because you rouge will not be getting attacked if you dont gear him up like a tank. Weapons should simply be +critical strike rating, +attack, etc.

Now with tatics, always position your rogue behind the enemy that your tank is attacking so you dont encounter any one vs. one battles. Backstabs are what make a rogue so deadly, i have played a rogue in every specilzation and all require you to utilize backstab, remember, your rogues positions are key. Also, make sure you dont waste all your stamina on one enemy because you will aquire additional aggro which can be lethal considering your low health. Healers with mass reguvination are also utilizable, single reguvination should be used on your tank only.

Finally, the skills you will be using are, deft hands, corecion(the one that useing cunning instead of strength as your damage amplifier), stealth(mostly if your are assassination spec and use alot of stuns. Poisons are a big bonus but not required, also the talent that thats you persuade people is good plus combat training.Assassination + Duelist=PWNAGE.

All these skills work wonders if use together and make harmony look fragile. I have defeated morrgains mother at level 9, but plz be advised that these only work together.

Cunning. Third important? Or first?
There is a skill that makes cunning replace strength in damage. Lethallity it is. So, wich makes the strength the second less important for a rogue, and cunning the second most important for a rogue.

Rogue
I do not agree with all you have said about the rogue. I think since you have said it Daggers or bows for the rogue. Which means lots of dex which means better armor and evasion i put most of my points into dex then some into cunning to get the deft hands and coersion. you dont need str since it does not help attack points with dagger or bow. dex provides enough armor and evasion so that you dont need many points in constitution. its all about the stealth and backstab damage then you get poison making to add attack damage to your daggers. It can really add up when you put poison on your daggers. get herbalism with a mage since you should always have at least one mage in your party, let them make the potions. I choose deft hands, poison making, coersion, stealth, all duel wield, and the assian with most points put into dex for the best damage output. make sure you have light armor so you are not agro against by mobs and you are good to go. That is my opion on the way a rogue should be setup and if you try it you will be amazed by how fast the monsters fall.
