This Sims 3 building tutorial will teach you how to build an attached garage with a foundation in the Sims 3. This tutorial will be completed in less than 10 steps and less than 10 minutes. This Sims 3 building tutorial can be easily completed by players of all skill levels, even beginners.

Step One

The first step in building an attached garage with a foundation in the Sims 3 is to level out the area in which the house and garage will be built. Begin by using the leveling tool and level out the ground. Then use some floor tiles to mark off the area where the garage and house will be placed. Use one color/pattern for the house and another for the garage so it can easily be distinguished where the house ends and the garage starts. The floor tiles must be used because the leveling tools will not completely level the ground. If the ground isn't completely leveled, it will lead to difficulty in completing this tutorial and imperfections in the finished house and attached garage.

Garages must be five tiles wide by eight tiles long. This is necessary to place the driveway extension in the garage, the garage door, and a separate door for Sims to access the garage from the house. The garage can certainly be larger though and making it larger will not make this tutorial harder. Before continuing, be sure to turn auto roofs off.

Step Two

Using the foundation tool, place foundation that covers all of the floor tiles that were laid down. Next, using the wall tool, add exterior walls to close in the house and the attached garage. Also, separate the house from the garage with a wall. If players desire to have a door leading to the garage from the house, place a two tile block of foundation and flooring (different color/pattern than the garage floor tiles) where the landing will be.

Step Three

Remove the foundation from the garage. To do this, lower the walls so that they are completely down. Next, hold down the CTRL key and use the foundation tool to remove all foundation, except the foundation built for the landing to access the garage from the house. Be careful not to delete any of the house's foundation or the landing.

Step Four

Turn on the cheat code by entering constrainFloorElevation false. Use the wall tool to add a wall completely around the perimeter of the garage at ground level. The wall will look a little distorted, but this will be fixed later.

Step Five

The floors in the house by the garage will have raised as well. To flatten them, take the terrain leveling tool and place it on one of the floor tiles that is adjacent to one of the raised corners and drag the terrain level tool over this corner to an adjacent tile. To flatten out the other corner repeat this on that side. This can be a bit tricky and can take a few tries. If something goes awry just click the “Undo” button and try it again.

Step Six

Using the terrain leveling tool, place it at one of the edges of the lower level and very carefully drag the terrain leveling tool over the grid diagonally until the grid is green. Let go and this will now be leveled. This step is also tricky so just click the “Undo” button if it needs to be done over. Turn off the cheat code by entering constrainFloorElevation true.

Step Seven

You have just built an attached garage with a foundation in the Sims 3, but a few finishing touches are needed. Add the driveway pieces and garage door. Add some connecting stairs to the landing and a door. Add a roof, some wall covering, lighting, and place a car inside or outside. Now, the rest of the house can be completed if it isn't already done. When adding wall covering to the outside of a house with an attached garage on foundation it is best to use siding or vertical paneling to cover up a few minor imperfections that are impossible to avoid.

Building an attached garage, you should consider the fact that most people use their garages for so much more than keeping their vehicles in. For some, the garage can serve as a quiet hideaway.

Garage door look problem and outside door issue
I have followed the steps appropriately and have run into a similar issue like others. My garage door looks like the top portion is covered in the wall, while the bottom isn't. This is also the case with my outside door leading from the garage to the backyard. I honestly dont know what I am doing wrong so please help me here.

Same garage door problem previously mentioned
I also can't get the door to show up correctly, only the bottom bit shows unless i put it in backwards. Yes, i turned the cheat code off before placing the door.

Here to Help
Hi Michelle and Lauren. What exact step are you running into problems on? I'm assuming step 7? Are you turning off the cheat code prior to placing the garage door? I will help you as long as necessary. Adding an attached garage to a foundation in the Sims 3 does seem more sensitive than in the Sims 2. It took me nearly a full week to get it just right, but it can be done :)

Garage Door Problem
I have the same problem as Lauren, I'm guessing. My garage door isn't showing up right. My guess is, the garage door is placed in the "half" wall that was placed under the wall that originally sat on the foundation. As a result, the garage door is covered by the first wall that was made around garage on top of the foundation. You can see the bottom of the garage door, but the top 2/3rds is covered by the wall. What do I need to do to fix this?
