Walk Through for Zen Gardens in PvZ

This walk through explains how to grow a Zen Garden in PopCap's game, Plants vs. Zombies. It also includes how to buy the Aquarium Garden and the Mushroom Garden in PvZ. This guide explains how to use chocolate and Stinky the snail in addition to the Tree of Wisdom.

PopCap’s newest release, Plants vs. Zombies, is an innovative twist to a traditional tower defense game. You defend your house against invading hordes of zombies using clever plants with special powers. In this excellent and fun new game, familiar PopCap favorites like Bejeweled, Insaniquarium, and Bejeweled Twist take on new life as they are plant-vs.-zombiefied. One of the best parts of the game are the Zen Gardens, which are obtained by finishing parts of the game or outright purchasing them from Crazy Dave.

Unlocking the Zen Garden

You can unlock the first Zen Garden by beating level 5-4 in Adventure Mode the first time through the game. This makes the Zen Garden available to you with three plants, fertilizer (5), and a green watering can that waters each plant individually. The following items can also now be purchased from Crazy Dave:

Fertilizer – Some plants want fertilizer in order to grow. $750
Bug Spray – Some plants need bug spray in order to grow. $1,000
Music Box – Some plants enjoy music and need it to grow. $15,000
Gardening Gloves – Allows you to move plants in a garden. $1,000
Golden Watering Can – Allows you to water four plants at the same time. $10,000
Wheelbarrow – Allows you to move plants between zen gardens. $200
Stinky the Snail – Will pick up coin for you. $3,000
Marigolds – Dave spawns 3 a day to be purchased for the garden. $2500

Getting Plants and Using Chocolate Wisely

Once you beat Adventure Mode, chocolate and immature sprouts in dirt pots will be begin dropping from the zombies in different levels and mini-games. Chocolate drops far more frequently than sprouts, so I try to use them fairly regularly. Many theorize that keeping your chocolates maxed at 10 will force more frequent plant drops. I have not been able to verify this theory. Feeding chocolate to Stinky the Snail, who is a familiar face from Insaniquarium, wakes him up and puts him on super speed for an hour so that he can pick up coins from your Zen Garden. I often run Plants vs. Zombies in windowed mode with Stinky the Snail gathering the coin that produce regularly. You would likely start doing this when you have at least half your garden full. Otherwise, Stinky spends a lot of time doing nothing. Plants will also produce coin faster for approximately 5 minutes if they are fed a piece of chocolate as well.

Crazy Dave sells three marigolds a day, so always buy up these marigolds, but do not let them fill more than half of your Zen Garden. You want to have room for any that drop during adventure mode, survival mode, or any of the mini-games. Sunflowers are great for producing coin but not great for selling.

Each plant has approximately three stages for growth before they are fully grown. A golden, sparkly halo around the bottom of the pot indicates a full-grown plant. Each full-marigold plant will spit out a gold coin or a silver coin approximately every two to three minutes, and the specialized plants produce coin every thirty seconds to a minute and a half.

The Mushroom Garden and the Aquarium Garden

Crazy Dave sells the Mushroom Garden for $30,000. Before you obtain the Mushroom Garden, your nighttime plants that grow from sprouts will sit in your zen garden sleeping. They will not be able to grow beyond their first stage until you have bought the Mushroom zen garden from Dave. Nighttime mushrooms drop readily from nighttime mini-games or nighttime survival mode boards. Each of these plants, when fully grown, can be sold for $10,000.

The Aquarium Garden can also be purchased from Crazy Dave for $30,000, and plants that reside in a pot full of water in their first stage are the ones that can be transported to this garden. Some plants are both aquatic and nighttime plants, so they will rest in a pot of water sleeping in your zen garden. These will wake up in the Mushroom Garden, but they will not grow until they are moved to the Aquarium Garden. Full grown plants in the Aquarium Garden will also sell for $10,000 each, so playing pool boards, especially nighttime pool boards, can rapidly fill your Aquarium Garden.

In order to move plants between the zen gardens, you must first purchase the wheelbarrow from Crazy Dave. Then simply click on the wheelbarrow and click on the plant you want to move. Alternately, you can also pick up the plant you want to move with your gardening gloves and place it on the wheelbarrow. Then click the yellow arrow to switch between your gardens. Click the wheelbarrow again and place your plant into its new space. Remember to check both of these zen gardens often because Stinky will only collect coin from the primary Zen Garden.

Tree of Wisdom

Once the Zen Garden is unlocked, Crazy Dave sells a special garden just for the Tree of Wisdom for $10,000. The tree can be fed constantly with special tree food, and it will give tips and easter eggs for the game. Here are just a few examples of the messages it gives:

Chompers and Wall-nuts work exceedingly well together.
You want two columns of sunflowers.
Snorkel Zombies... are best dealt with, with Wall-nuts on Lilypads.
Pssst! Try typing 'future' while playing to experiences zombies... from the FUTURE!.
What's cheaper than free? Nothing! That's why Puff-shrooms are essential on all night levels!

Crazy Dave sells Tree Food for $2,500. Each application will grow the Tree of Wisdom one step, and it will likely sprout a leaf with every application. The tree has approximately thirty growth levels and is yet another way to advance in PvZ.

Final Notes

The Zen Garden is perfect for running in the background to make some extra money while you watch TV, take a nap, or even go to bed at night. Simply take your game off of full screen mode from the options menu, feed Stinky a piece of chocolate, and he’ll run around picking up coin for an hour. When you have enough plants in your Zen Garden, he can make up to $10,000 coins in an hour easily. You can also sell the plants in your Mushroom Garden and Aquarium Garden for $10,000 apiece when they are fully grown, so make sure to check on them often! The Zen Garden is an excellent way to reach the $80,000 that you need for your final card slot in the Adventure Game and be the master of PvZ.

There's no way to get rid of Stinky the Snail once you get him, but if you get 10 chocolates, you will be "full" on chocolates. Your plants should start dropping once again. Just don't use the chocolates!

Plantern only occurs on night boards, I think. Try a night board with a pool for a higher chance.

I love PvZ, too!

I think that you cannot get any of the upgrades as a plant. I think that the Cat o' Nine upgrades from a lily pad even though it looks like you just put it on top of the lilypad, so that would mean you can't get it as a plant.

Hmm...iPad2 PvZ player here. I have all but Doom Shroom plant in night garden, have all but Repeater in zen garden. I only have lilies, sea shrooms and tangleweed in aquatic garden . Are there no cat o' nines avail? I keep playing in hopes of getting Cat and Doom, but nothing so far. I know Doom exists because I saw it in a friend's game. Never seen Cat o' though. Are any others not available? I think I read that power-ups like corn cob and golden magnet, etc. aren't available. Really wondering only about Cat o' Nine being avail. <br><br>Also, I have the max amount of coins (999,990). Can't spend it up. Wish I could buy something other than garden supplies and plants. Not even bothering to collect my coins during games anymore because my garden makes enough to replenish within 10 minutes of spending down! Kind of a bummer. Half the fun was building up the wealth. No fun to have all that coin and nowhere to spend! The makers should add something fun to spend on....like my damn Cat O' Nine!

maybe the reason why u keep getting them is because you might be playing the night levles. you get plants that are, day fog, roof, pool and night obtained. when you play levles like fog, you get sea shroom magnet shroom and pumpkin. and when you play roof levles, you get winter melons garlic umberella leaves and flower pot. when you play night levles, you get the plants you have in your garden. pool levles bring you three peaters, lily pads and tangle kelps. and lastly, you play the day levles and tou get snow pea, peashooter and sunflower.

Full Zen garden

I've got a full zen garden now on my iPod touch, I've just unlocked the enlightened achievement getting every zen,mushroom and aquarium garden plant: The illusive magnet shroom was in 'it's raining seeds' okay story over, does anyone need help finding any of the plants. 

iThingy version

@Milawe: Whilst there are difference between the PC and iThingy version, the iThingy version of PvZ does have Zen Garden, Mushroom Garden and Aquatic Garden. I have not seen the Tree of Knowledge on it, though.
Filling the Zen Garden with one of each plant gets a little frustrating, as I seem to get a lot of repeat drops of Puff-Shrooms, Doom-Shrooms and Grave Busters.

Magnet Shroom

Hi, Chris,

I think I actually got my magnet shroom playing Beghouled, and it will sleep unless you put it in the Mushroom Garden. Does the iPod version have a Mushroom Zen Garden? If not, then you may not be able to get the magnet shroom.

I think I'll fire up my old PC version and see what else I can get. I haven't gotten the Three-Peater yet, but my husband has. The baby version of the Three-Peater is SO CUTE.

Versions

This is a total guess, but I know that there are vast differences between my PC version and my iPad version of the game. For one, the iPad version of the game doesn't seem to have a Zen Garden much to my dismay. There are even differences between my PC version and my friend's version. (For example, they can make Zombatars but I can't!)

So, I think there are version differences, but only PopCap knows exactly what they are behind the scenes. The standard rule seems to be that the plants drop most on the type of board where they are introduced. The Magnet Shroom is used on night boards mostly until you get the Coffee Bean, so I would play mini-games that are in night boards or Survival modes that occur on night boards.

The night pool levels are your best bet for Magnet Shrooms, I think. It also depends on what version of the game you have and what platform. Hope that helps!

chomper speciality

when you are on a level that has zombonies, zombie bobsled teams and catapult zombies, it will eat your problem away. plant a chomper in front of one of them and he'll eat them whole. it's something i descoverd on a "wierd" level. (tip: they wont eat gargantuars whole.)

no what i mean is when i try to make my plants eat chocolate when their not fully grown, they wont eat it, but when i try to feed the pumpkin chocolate when it doesen't have a gold halo on the bottom, it will eat it and it's the only 1 that will!!!!

Thank you for participating. It's not a glitch that it will eat chocolate. You can drop chocolate on any plant. You just won't get the full benefits until they are fully grown.

Chocolate Eating Plants

Yes, plants can eat chocolate whenever you drop a piece on them. It's best to wait until they are fully grown because dropping chocolate on them makes them spit out coins at a more rapid rate. They don't really start spitting out coins until they're fully grown. Look for the glowy aura at the base of the plant to see if it is fully grown.

Sellling Your Plants

You can sell your plants when they are fully grown if you want to do so. The ones that you find in the game (rather than the daisies you buy from Crazy Dave) are worth a lot more. I, however, don't sell my plants. I fill up my Zen garden, and then I give Stinky a piece of chocolate. Then I let him run around for an hour, and that gets me a bunch of money!

Full Marigold Garden

If you fill your entire Zen Garden with marigolds and do not leave any empty spaces, you will no longer get any drops from the game. Thus, you should always leave a few spaces by selling off a few of your fully grown marigolds. They will sell for 3,000 coins. If you get any nocturnal plants, you can move them immediately into your night garden.

RE: Survival

Survival can be played in so many ways that there's no one specific strategy. I use Gloom Shrooms and area affect items in the water lanes and double stack them. I then have two cob cannons in the back of the water lanes as well as cat tails. That means I can attack the whole screen using the lane that is attacked the least.

Then I use a TON of Spikeweeds and upgrade them. I use two or three rows, and then I use Winter Melons to slow everything down so that they stay in the Spikeweeds a lot longer. Hope that helps!

Sunshroom and Sea-shroom (cont.)

If you look at the 2nd page of this guide and click on the Mushroom Garden picture, you can see both a sunshroom and a sea-shroom in there. I think I got the seashrooms before I got my Aquatic Garden, so I temporarily stuck them in my mushroom garden. It just so happens that I took a screenshot of it then.

Sunshrooms and Seashrooms

You can definitely get sunshrooms and sea-shrooms in your Zen garden. I have multiples of both. I have NEVER seen a flower pot, though, and between me, my mother, my husband, and my daughters, none of us have ever seen a flower pot drop for our Zen gardens. Please let me know if you get one and let me know what version of the game you were playing when you received it.

Marigolds

There are 11 colours of marigols; red, orange, yellow, light green, light blue, dark blue, dark purple, light purple, white (like in game mode), light pink and dark pink. And yes you can get the extention plants in yuor zen garden, but they drop very rarely.

Dusappearing Zen Plants

You're Right S! My $8000 Cabbage-Pult and Coffee bean plants *BOTH* disappeared from the garden, while my cheaper plants-- the marigolds-- remained. I have this sneaking suspicion that Crazy Dave stole them, so from now on I sell them as soon as they're grown. Hope that helps.

You can put any plant in the mushroom garden that you want, and I think that if you have a fullgrown plant in the mushroom garden, you can move it to the regular garden to spit out gold. This can be great when you're using Speedy to get gold fast.

Mushroom Garden

Has anyone had success putting plants in the Mushroom Garden that are not mushrooms? I put a Grave Buster and a Spikeweed in there just to see how they did, and they seem pretty happy so far... Has anyone else experimented with the environments?

some computers can change dates. we can use that to get more plants off crazy dave per day. Also, i play the nighttime pool board minigame "it's raining seeds" loads of times, but haven't been getting any lately...

Welcome, fellow PvZer,

I have yet to see a glitch with PvZ where a single plant disappears. Make sure you check your other gardens just in case someone moved it. Otherwise, I think it would be safe to say that someone used your account and sold it.

Plants are best for giving coin and for collecting. You do not get anything for getting one of every plant, but when you have a large number of plants, you can feed your snail 1 chocolate and let it roam in windowed mode for an hour. You can easily get 10,000+ coins in that hour by doing that. If you set your snail loose with chocolate and also feed a few of your plants chocolate, you can gain even more. It's one of the easiest ways to get coin while you're not at the computer. It doesn't take very long to fill your Zen Garden when you can buy 3 marigolds a day and get them all to full growth in 1 day. Marigolds make as much coin as any special drops.

Last but not least, you can also sell your plants once you grow them. Do not bug spray them when they're at full growth unless you are going to run the snail. It's not worth it until then after you spray them for them to reach full growth.

disapearing plant?

I had a full grown spike plant, that i swear just disaperaed one day. I did not sell it. Do they get old or something? Maybe just a glich (or maybe someone else was in my profile, but they all deny it). Also, it there any benefit to keeping the plants (besides coins)? Is there a bonus for getting them all?

Good idea! I have one of almost every plant now except the winter melon, and I have a few repeats. I've found that playing on boards with pools on them definitely produce a greater number of plant drops, and I try to keep my chocolate maxed as well. There's theories that if your chocolate is full, a plant will drop instead, but I haven't gotten the PvZ people to confirm it.

I had so much money and my Zen Garden was 3/4 filled with mostly Marigolds with a Wall-nut, Grave Buster, and Chomper as my only plants, so I just sold all my full-grown marigolds to Crazy Dave for 3,000 a pop. I need some more plants!

Don't panic, Pat! You can find find mushrooms again on any nighttime board. Remember that they ONLY grow in the mushroom garden, so you shouldn't sell it until you have it fully grown. It will get you 10,000 coins once you do, though.

The Tree of Knowledge will also tell you that you can get the most plant drops on boards with a pool. So, if you play a nighttime pool board, you should get more frequent mushroom drops.

i got a mushroom and i sold it... i cant find any more now!!!!!!(i go in alot of nighttime levels)

You can either find plants in the various mini-games or adventure mode boards. In addition, you can always buy new plants from Crazy Dave. When your plants are fully grown, they will have a sparkly golden ring at the base. Then you can sell them for maximum coin.

Hi, aiika!

You need to play the boards in order to get them to drop. They will drop from any mini-game and any Adventure Mode level. They will also drop frequently in Survival mode. The Tree of Wisdom tells us that plants will drop more often in boards that have pools. I've also been told that if you fill up on chocolate, more plants will drop. I don't know if that's true or not, but I get rather frequent plant drops when I have 10 chocolate.

Zen

Theoretically, there are 27 plants for normal garden (grave buster and plantern are "normal" plants as well) to drop, plus marigolds in various colors. Taking into account, that some plants can look in differents directions, there are more than this 27 (e.g. Tall-nuts on first page of this article)
For mushroom garden there are 8 (sea-shroom is aquatic), for water-garden at least 3 plants. Since there are more slots than plants in some gardens, the question is wheter special plants (like cat-tail) also drop. I couldn't find out about that, yet.

How many different plants can you get in Zen garden? I have 10 different color marigolds and 14 other plants. I want to try get every possible plants but how many are there? can you name them?
