Describes the gems in the classic unexpanded Diablo 2 game.

Basics

Gems are items in Diablo 2 and D2 Lord of Destruction that go into sockets to give buffs of varying degrees. They are not able to be removed once they go into a socket, so make sure that you want it where you are putting it. There are seven types of gems and five grades of gems. The first gem that you insert into the items is what color the item will end up. This article looks at Gems in the unexpanded Diablo 2 game; another article will take care of how they are changed in D2 Lord of Destruction.

In Diablo 2 helms, weapons and shields are socketed. Helms hold up to two sockets and shields and weapons can hold up to three sockets.
