Glitches and Tech Issues in Call of Duty 5: World at War

Trying to troubleshoot an error or connection problem in Call of Duty 5? There are two main errors that keep people from playing online. Find out how to fix them here.

Call of Duty: World at War, also known as Call of Duty 5, has the potential to be a good game. I don’t think it is quite as good as Call of Duty 4, but still quite fun. The problem is that right now this game is buggy as hell.

If the people behind it don’t put out some kind of update or patch soon, this game is going to tank big time.

With console gaming steadily growing, PC gamers have very little tolerance for buggy games. Just look at what happened with Hellgate London. It was already in the bargain bin by the time all the kinks were worked out.

Right now, two main errors are preventing people from playing this game online. A Google search for ‘Call of Duty 5’ and the error ‘Can not connect to online service’ yields over 119,000 results. That’s pretty amazing for a game that has only been out for a few weeks. Furthermore, a Google search of ‘Call of Duty 5’ and ‘Server authentication error’ yields over 19,000 results.

Needless to say, lots of people are having problems playing CoD5 online and they’re talking about it in various message boards all over the web. I wrote this article to help other gamers get their CoD5 working. It took me two days to work all this stuff out, and I’m not real happy about having to do so after spending $49.95 on this game at Steam.com.

Can Not Connect to Online Service

If you receive the Call of Duty 5:World at War 'Can Not Connect to Online Service' error, then try any of the following:

Suggestion #1: The quick fix for when you get this error is to quit the game, then reload it. I’ve read that there are some server problems with the developer and that causes the error to come up way too often.

Suggestion #2: On my own PC, the culprit behind this error was Comodo Firewall. Even though I had designated this game’s executable as a trusted application, Comodo still didn’t like something about the way it tried to connect online. I had to completely uninstall Comodo before I could get CoD5 to play online, because simply exiting the program wasn’t enough. Now I am just using Windows Vista’s built-in firewall and it works fine.

Suggestion #3: Activision addresses this error on their support site by saying that you need to make sure you have port forwarding enabled on your router, and it gives some specific TCP and UDP port numbers. I am playing this game through a wireless router and didn’t have to do anything extra on my router to make it work, but you could always try if nothing else helps. Consult the documentation for your router if you need help getting into it to make changes.

Server Authentication Error

The Call of Duty 5: World at War Server Authentication Error is at least easy to fix, but it is a royal pain. After you click 'Find Games' to get a list of servers, most people will click 'Refresh List' to update the server list in order to see how many people are on them, what map they are using, and so on. The problem is that after you refresh the view, this game throws that Server Authentication Error. It really makes no sense at all.

To get around the error, all you have to do is load up the game, click Refresh List to update the servers, then quit the game and reload. This time, just join a server without refreshing the list.

Cannot connect for online multi player
Same issue as others on here; worked fine w/ multiplayer last night, and for 2 years prior. Tonight, when i go to play online and the screen then says "Downloading game settings" after about a minute, which is way longer than it's ever been, i get a message that says "unable to connect to Activision Matchmaking" so I'm guessing Activision is having problems with their servers. Hopefully it'll be fixed soon

Only one server with people.
No matter how many times i refresh the server list there is only a maximum of 5 servers, and only 1 server containing anyone. Is this because I did not download all the patches?

cod 5 multiplayer error
COD 5 runs fine on my xbox 360 but not on my PS3. i have a hard time connecting to other players or being able to join any games. i've added my ps3 to the dmz and also connected my ps3 directly to my modem and still have connection issues. This is very annoying. Sony please fix these issues. My XBOX works flawlessly, wish i can say the same for my PS3.

Call of Duty-World at War (CoD5) multiplayer error
Well.. i downloaded and updated everything and ive been having this annoying issue that wont allow me to just continuely play without a problem.. but that problem only occurs when ever there is any loading into another map an error just pops up and my game freezes on the load screen it gives an error saying --Call of Duty(R): World at War Multiplayer has stopped working.-- ive tried to reinstall all updates and the game.. and it continues.. it is not a sound problem or a computer issue, my requirements are way above minimum... and it is not my firewall.. im not sure what to do.. ive looked all over the net.. and found no problem.. i would really appreciate any help.. Please.. any help at all..

CoD WaW crashes
Another issue with this (very buggy) game: if you use steam and CoD WaW crashes frequently, try going into your Steam options and turning off the in game community hot key.

File->Settings-> In-Game tab-> uncheck Enable Steam Community In Game

Loosing rank & xp
My multiplayer works just fine until I time out. Whenever I time out I loose all of my progress, and I is frustrating when you get to about captain and loose it all. I have not met anyone who also has this problem. Is there any solution?

Also...
One other thing, and this is really silly, but it works. If you have an HP computer, try plugging something into the Microphone jack. Even a pair of headphones will work. I had to do that on a friend's computer to get CoD4 working. It's something to do with the sound drivers built onto the motherboards that HP uses.

Call of Duty Not Responding
There's like a million different reasons why it would throw that error. The main things you need to check are your video card and sound drivers, as they tend to cause a lot of problems. Also check and make sure your firewall isn't blocking the connection. Can you play it single player?

cod 5 multiplayer error
everytime i start mltiplayer on cod 5 i will click find servers refresh the list then join a server and as soon as i start and begin to do something, whether its shooting or running vista says "Call Of Duty: World At War has stopped working" and i dont understand what is happening. I have already looked at many sites and they were no help. I have also already downloaded and installed the patch 1.4, the newest one i coul find. Please respond, thanks
