How Do I Uninstall Nprotect Game Guard?

If you are unfortunate enough to have installed Nprotect Game Guard on your system, you could be staring at a whole heap of heartache later. Notoriously difficult to uninstall – there's no option – Game Guard looks and behaves like a rootkit, but it can be removed with a little tinkering.

Where Does Game Guard Come From?

The Nprotect Game Guard software is a part of several free, downloadable MMORPG games that are available on the World Wide Web. The software is designed to act as an anti-cheat iprogram in order to promote fairer play on game servers.

Why uninstall it?

However, the software is very intrusive to your PC system, attaching itself to legitimate Windows applications in order to hide itself and is a severe drain on your PC's resources. You might think uninstalling the game that Game Guard came with would be enough, but unfortunately you'd be wrong! Game Guard buries itself deeply into your system, so even removing the game leaves behind several hidden files. What's more, there's no option to uninstall it from Windows Device Manager, and it doesn't appear on your Start Menu programs either. So how do you get rid of it?

Unfortunately, there's currently no way to simply remove Game Guard yet continue to play the game as Game Guard integrates itself into the game client, meaning you can't run the game if Game Guard isn't present. The only way to remove Game Guard is to remove the game as well.

How to get rid of it:

If you're unlucky enough to be leeched by Game Guard, here's how to rid yourself of the software.

  • Uninstall the game which Game Guard is bundled with. While this won't uninstall Game Guard, it will remove some of the .dll files (Dynamic Link Libraries) which Game Guard needs to communicate with the game.
  • Browse to the install folder of the original game and locate the 'Game Guard' folder. Chances are it has been left behind by the uninstaller, so delete the file from the directory and empty the recycle bin.
  • Make sure you can view hidden system files, and locate the following files:

npptnt2.sys

nppt9x.vxd

They normally reside in the Windows\System32 folder. Once you've found them, delete them.

The next part is the tricky part as it involves editing the registry. Go wrong here and you could render your operating system unusable, so be careful. It might be a good idea to create a system restore point before going further.

  • To run the registry editor: Click Start > Run > then type 'Regedit' without the quotes.
  • Browse to the following branch:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\\SYSTEM\\CurrentControlSet\\Services\\NPPTNT2

  • Remove the entire branch. Close Regedit and reboot your PC.
  • Download and run a good anti-rootkit detection program, such as Sophos' Anti-Rootkit scanner and run a full system scan. Remove any files found by the software and reboot your PC.

And that's it!

more about game guard
some ppl here says, I delete game guard but when I start game it comes back...

In guide and some posts it says: If you want get rid off nprotect you must delete and that game.

Simply if you have a game witch use Nprotect Gameguard you don't need to delete it! If you want to play this game you must have game guard. It affect most of mmorpg games like dragonica, cabal, lineage2 (retail only, privates are playable w/o it) and so on.

RE: How Do I Uninstall Nprotect Game Guard?
The instructions posted are for removing gameguard leftovers from your pc if you uninstalled a game which uses GG. If you reinstall the game, gameguard will reinstall itself once the game is launched.

More recent versions of GG also installs files under C:\Program Files\Common Files\INCAshared folder so make sure to check for some leftovers there as well.

GamGuard
Does the Game Guard come back after you re-install the game?

And also.. I pretty much did everything in the instructions except delete the game guard from the game folder because :

1.) The entire folder must have been completely removed during un-installation.

and remove the NPPTNT2 branch because:

2.) it's not showing that there is even a NPPTNT2 branch in there.. so idk if thats good or bad.. or what.. but yeah it's not there so I can't remove it and Idk if that means it's already removed or not.

Game Guard Removal Procedures
In order to remove GameGuard, follow these instructions. DO NOT remove anything else. Click Start. Go to Run. Type regedit and enter. Do not use quotation marks. Find HKEY Local Machine and open. Find System. Locate Current Control Set. Locate Services and open. Under Services, find npggsvc. Open this file. On the right, you will see all of the associated files. You need to delete everything individually except the 1st item. After completion of this task, reboot your pc. Hope this helps. Falcon

Re: Please Enlightenment
@Heri

This is not a post to disable GameGuard. As Brian mentioned in his article, this is a way to REMOVE GameGuard AFTER you REMOVE the game as well.

So uninstall your game and then try the steps Brian mentioned. I know I'll be trying that after I uninstall AION.

GG
I unistalled this about an hour after reading this. I uninstalled the game and searched for the files but couldn't find them anywhere.

Is there a chance that I got lucky and they didn't install or should I keep looking?

Gameguard with Aion
I followed your guide to remove the gameguard that came bundled with Aion (this was after I uninstalled this game). I didn't find the registry entries you mentioned, however I did find a windows service called nProtectGameGuard Service that references a file in system32 called gameMon.des.

I'm assuming that file should also be removed but I can't find any information about it. Anyone have ideas?
pauln Sep 8, 2009 2:44 AM
Windows 7
Rather than editing the registry directly, you can use the "sc" command.

- Type "cmd" into the start button search
- Right-click on "cmd.exe" and select "Run as Administrator"
- Type "sc delete npptnt2", press enter
- Type "sc delete npggsvc", press enter

As Anon said, for Windows 7 x64, the files are in the SysWOW64 directory, not system32. Find and delete:

- npptnt2.sys
- nppt9x.vxd
- GameMon.des

Re: Windows 7
Under win 7 x64 the files are in: C:\Windows\SysWOW64\
and the registry is:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\\SYSTEM\\CurrentControlSet001\\Services\\NPPTNT2
or
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\\SYSTEM\\CurrentControlSet002\\Services\\NPPTNT2

Windows 7
I am trying to remove this under Windows 7 RC7100, but the nppt* files do not show up in the system32 folder (I even searched the entire C drive and did not find them) and that registry entry is not present either. This is after uninstalling the game which GameGuard was installed alongside (in this case, Lineage 2). I still believe the rootkit is present on the system somewhere, somehow, because it is preventing VNC server from working, which is a known blocked program for GameGuard. This has caused me a lot of frustration...

At this point I am ready to just reformat to get rid of it once and for all since I'm out of ideas... anyone have any advice for removal of this under Windows 7?
