5 Properties that Would Make Great MMOs

Pretty much anyone who's ever played Pokemon would agree that it would make a great MMO. Nintendo's monster franchise is not the only property that would lend itself well to the genre, though. Check out our MMO wish list, including great TV, film, and video game properties.

Somehow they managed to make Star Wars suck

I can still remember the excitement I felt when I first found out that Star Wars was going to become an MMORPG. Here was a property just begging for the MMO treatment, filled with established canon, awesome characters to interact with, and a compelling galactic conflict to participate in. Unfortunately the end result of that announcement, Star Wars Galaxies, utterly failed to live up to expectations.

All the news that has been slowly trickling out leading up to the release of Star Trek Online has again raised my anticipation levels to a similar plateau. If Cryptic can deliver on the promise that the license comes with, STO could end up being one of the best MMOs of all time.

Of course, Star Trek and Star Wars are not the only huge properties out there that lend themselves well to an MMO environment. There are several blockbuster video game, television, and movie franchises that, if treated correctly, could be adapted into some killer MMO games.

Harry Potter

Yes, a Harry Potter MMORPG would be one that would most likely appeal to younger players, we're talking strictly T for Teen here, but the younger player demographic is one that really hasn't been tapped. It's true we've all been stuck playing WoW with over-caffeinated fourteen-year-olds up way past their bedtimes, but Blizzard is not really marketing the game toward them specifically.

The Harry Potterverse is a well-established and fleshed-out fantasy world. Players could spend their time chatting and shopping in Diagon Alley before heading off to Hogwarts. The first half of the game would be spent in the school, learning skills in classes and taking on small instances like the Chamber of Secrets. Afterward, higher-level players could move out into the larger world, choosing to either fight against the dark lord's evil or signing up to stand alongside him.

The books and movies are filled with iconic locations that would make great raids and instances, and I can't even begin to imagine the types of quests Hagrid would send you on.

Check out page two for more on our favorite Sci-Fi properties that are begging to become MMORPGS, and an idea for adapting one of the most successful video game franchises of all time.

why they should not be mmo's
I'll disagree with the assertion that any of the listed properties should be mmos. Star Trek Online is going to be a debacle of the same order that Star Wars Galaxies was, at least for fans of the source material. Sure it's got the appropriate graphics/music/mood, but at heart every single mmo is the same game: kill this, Fedex that, and some throw in poorly designed pvp.

Every single licensed MMO ever created has made a mockery of it's source material with regard to canon and general faithfulness. This is because mmo developers are some of the least creative and most risk-averse people around. If it doesn't fit it into their kill-it or deliver-it mentality, it won't work in the game.

I won't go into all the ways that Star Wars Galaxies, Age of Conan, and Lord of the Rings Online (just to name three off the top of my head) utterly failed to accurately present very basic facets of the worlds and continuity they were based on. Star Trek Online, and every other licensed MMO, will be the same way.

MMO devs and investors use the license name to secure funding and build fan hype, and then continuously deliver the same crappy experience in game after game, and it never bears anything other than a superficial resemblance to the world it is supposed to portray.

If you're a Star Trek fan, do yourself a favor and check your expectations at the door: you may very well enjoy STO as a game, but don't fool yourself into thinking it will be anything like the Star Trek you know from the films, tv shows, and books.

Super Mario/ Super Mario RPG series
Why not??? Imagine the character possibilities. You could be a "thwomp" and just try to crush people as they pass by all day long. Seriously, just take the Mario universe and give players a live world to be any character in it... it would rule and it would sell a ton.

pokemon
It's so bizarre how Pokémon hasn't gone the MMO direction yet.
Even without a subscription and sub-par graphics, Nintendo would cash in so much if they released it on the wii... Given the console's install base, this would probably sell 10 million copies easily plus some expansions they would release in the future.
Pokémon MMO is a no-brainer, can't really understand why it isn't out yet.
