Champions Online Will Fail Without a Full Respec or Retcon Option

The main selling point of Champions Online is the extreme customization and character variety. This virtue becomes a vice if players are not given the ability to fully respec (retcon) and repair choices they later regret.

Preview of Champions Online

If you are unfamiliar with Champions Online you might want to read the Champions Online Preview. It explains the game in detail and analyzes its major features.

Character Customization - One of Champion Online's Primary Selling Points

As noted in the preview of Champions Online, character customization is one of the game's primary strengths. This includes the character creator itself, power customization (colors as well as emanation point), and the ability to create completely unique and varied characters. Cryptic constantly hypes this as one of the most unique aspects of CO when compared to other MMOs.

Without a full respec option, this extreme customization becomes a detriment rather than an asset. Without a full respec, the high level of customization simply adds complexity and risk to character design rather than flexibility and fun. Having a lot of choices and flexibility can actually be a bad thing if every choice could potentially ruin your character. Choice without the ability to undo or recover from that choice raises the stakes to a level so high it is harder to simply enjoy the game.

Full Respecs Are Badly Needed in Champions Online

Right now, you can only respec your last 10 level up choices. As noted in the CO preview, this includes power picks as well as stat increases, travel powers, and advantages added to powers. It is extremely easy to ruin a character by choosing a power, stat, or advantage that you are unhappy with later. The ability might not scale up like you thought, a better or more fun power of the same type might come available, your playstyle might change a bit, or many other reasons.

Champions Online is a non-class based game that touts its extreme customization as a primary selling point. This is an accurate claim only if people are able to UNDO their choices if they end up being unhappy with them. Effectively requiring that people do hours of research and use third party build planners in order to avoid fun ruining mistakes is a horrible way to go. The current situation makes leveling up a time of stress and worry rather than excitement and fun.

But What About Powergamers?

Some players worry that full respecs will allow powergamers to constantly respec their characters into "whatever is best" at the moment. Here's the thing: powergamers are already playing "whatever is best", and they always will be. The fact of the matter is this: powergamers will always powergame. They will spend hundreds of hours researching and planning their characters, and they will do everything it tanks to twink up and powerlevel their characters. Denying respecs to the entire game will not impact powergamers. They already know exactly which powers they want, which stats to raise, and which advantages to pick.

Respecs are what allow everyone else to be able to enjoy their characters as well. Respecs allow casual players to simply PLAY THE GAME rather than RESEARCH THE GAME. Respecs give regular players the opportunity to tweak and improve their character build so they actually have some hope of competing with the powergamers.

Furthermore, developers almost always find it impossible to resist balancing their game based on the way powergamers play it. Difficulty and xp curves will eventually be tweaked based on how powergamers play. If regular players cannot improve and enhance their builds to keep up, they simply suffer.

Thanks for the tip on sizing the chat window. They definitely need to make it so you can grab it in more spots.

Groovymarlin and others: Thanks for the comment. The feedback keeps rolling in, and its staying at the 95%+ in favor of full respecs.

Interesting Note: Today, first day of the "head start" release, the cost for respec of single powers got jacked through the roof. Hopefully the formula is just broken, but right now it is insanely expensive.

My characters leave the tutorial with about 3s resources.

The first power respec at level 6 costs 4 silver.

So I leave the tutorial and cannot even afford to respec ONE power.

Something ain't right about that. :)

Thanks for reading, and pass the link along to your friends!

RE: Flagshipped
I had to laugh when I saw the comments about Bill Roper and comparisons to HGL. I thought the same thing! Eventually, they DID introduce a respec item in HGL (in multiplayer mode only though), but by then it was too late.

I really, really hope that Bill Roper isn't the kiss of death to CO like he was to HGL. I think he'd have to actively try to kill it, though, because CO is already a much better and fuller-featured game than HGL was (even though I sort of loved HGL and do miss it now that it's gone).

For sure, full respecs need to be available. Even if you have to complete a quest line to get one, just like it used to be in old school CoH.

RE: Champions Online Will Fail Without a Full Respec or Retcon Option
I did not have enough patience to read most of the comments, but I have played COH for 3 years and had tons of respecs earned or given for free every time the game changed.

The difference between CO and COH is not great but big enough to see why Cryptic so is much against full respec in CO. The simple truth of it is if you will be able to respec you character in CO as much as you need to make good power choices then you will be done with the game in a matter of months. So devs do not want you to be able to do that for simple economic reasons, because they want you keep playing and making alts and keep paying that monthly subscription. The lack of respecs is just another way to hide this game's lack of depth.

Narf!
Keep on hating and ranting trolls... I'll be enjoying this game for years to come.

Great points. Thanks for this article
Thank you for writing this article to bring some major media attention to this issue. Hopefully the CO developers will read this and realize the issue is more serious and more time critical than they seem to believe right now.

kind of against it
I'm unsure if it is a good idea. Your reasons boil down to "the game can change so radically any one specific character build is useless." If that's the case and it is so fine-tuned that one mechanic can cause you to rethink your entire build, it has more problems than respeccing or not.

The point of making a character in this is to make one with my own personal identity. If I have to sacrifice it because of unbalanced play, it's not really going to endear me to the game. Respeccs might be symptomatic of the game's mechanics dominating way too much over the idea of customization.

I mean, if I want to create the incredible hulk, only to find out that at lvl 40 strength and invulnerability are gimp compared to healing and magic, I'm not sure I'd even do a full respec, because I don't want to be a green doctor strange with huge muscles and no shirt. That's what an alt is for.

D2 has full respec.
sakujo, it is worth noting that D2 actually has full respec. It has it via character trainers. There's a reason why offline and open battle.net were always as popular, if not more popular, than closed battle.net.

Furthermore, Diablo 3 will have full respec coded in.

So it is relatively clear that Blizzard fully understands that a modern RPG - even a non-MMO one- must have full respec.

Thanks for posting and visiting. Bookmark us! :)

Full respecs hasn't hurt D2
That game is as old as sin. granted it doesn't cost anything but I don't think it'll ruin the game. Yes a full respec will be great and I would personally want it but the moment you have committed yourself to an MMORPG you are more than like get deeper into the game than others. I play wow and their are constant discussions about eeeking out the last bit of healing or dps out of my toon. That's studying and such.. I don't think CO will fail and no one should be against full respec especially coming from wow where there's Dual specs but I don't think it'll be a failure without it..
Reiken Aug 27, 2009 8:46 PM
wtf...
You better be trolling this guys article quitoxic1 Cause I actually had respect for you, after seeing this idk if its a joke or what..

RE: Champions Online Will Fail Without a Full Respec or Retcon Option
I don't understand what all the fuss is. So you have to reroll your character a few times to get it right. So what?

If you aren't willing to do a few hours of research, and maybe reroll your character a few times, then you are too stupid for MMOs. Find a new hobby, losers.

RE: Champions Online Will Fail Without a Full Respec or Retcon Option
WTF! This game was advertised as "you can change everything about your character all the way down to your gender."

What happened to that? No full respec? BS!!!!!!
Drogan Aug 27, 2009 5:25 PM
So, just hold all training until 40?
So if I want to have a non-gimpy level 40, I basically have to save all my training points until level 40, then go into the powerhouse and spend 10 hours experimenting. Is that basically it?

No thanks. This article saved me $50. Thanks.
quixotic1 Aug 27, 2009 5:22 PM
Confession...
I've been trolling the CO forum pretending that I am against respecs. While it has been fun, I think I can be honest here in a community of "readers."

I did it at first as a lark, thinking surely nobody would actually argue against respecs. Turns out there are a few morons who actually are. What a joke.

Hopefully the CO devs won't listen to the idiots arguing against full respecs.
Quazion Aug 27, 2009 5:19 PM
Surprise surprise...
So Bill Roper is trying to kill another MMO and another company huh?

Lets see........

No full respecs.

Dubious, greedy business model.

CO sounds a lot like Hellgate: London. Whatever happened to that game?

RE: Champions Online Will Fail Without a Full Respec or Retcon Option
I am not really good at making eloquent arguments so I'll leave it at this-- without a full respec there is no way I wish risk wasting my time playing this game. I don't want to spend hours doing research, and I don't want to be stuck with crappy powers I hate a few days or weeks later.

Thats it. Thanks.

RE: Champions Online Will Fail Without a Full Respec or Retcon Option
I have a feeling this is not the kind of press Cryptic was hoping for a couple days before their game was released.

I've seen links to this article on a bunch of gaming sites and blogs, and the overwhelming opinion is one of shock that CO doesn't have full respecs.

This game has all the signs of a Hellgate: London if they stubbornly dig in their heels and ignore resounding player feedback.
Fan Aug 27, 2009 4:23 PM
Great article as usual.
This is a great article with spot on analysis. Articles like this are why I bookmarked this site and check it every day.

This might be the only site where I can read articles written by people who have both a gamer's AND a developer's perspective.

Respec threads on CO forums
There's been a lot of talk of needing a full respec option on the CO forums; more now than in the past few weeks. I really hope the devs take notice of this and decide to implement something sensible.

RE: Champions Online Will Fail Without a Full Respec or Retcon Option
I feel like its 2004 again and I'm playing City of Heroes. This exact same argument took place. The same kind of twits said respecs would ruin the game.

They were wrong then and they are wrong now. Without respecs, CO is a failure of a game.
Flagshipped Aug 27, 2009 3:39 PM
Shocked!
I'm shocked. Bill Roper is trying to ruin another game? He fought respecs in Hellgate: London. How did that work out again?

This guy is corporate kryptonite. Give him tons of money, resources, and he finds a way to ruin it.

No full respecs? That's a friggin joke.
Noob Aug 27, 2009 3:28 PM
Guess I am a noob.
If wanting full respecs makes me a noob, then I guess I am a noob. But I'd rather be a happy noob having fun than a sad elitist whose entire enjoyment of a game hinges upon making other people miserable.

I would have quit WoW years ago if they didn't have the full respec option. Trying new things is often the only thing that keeps me playing (and paying).
Freaks Aug 27, 2009 3:26 PM
Control Freaks
ARGH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Control freak elitist gamers are the worst. I am so sick of the elitist crowd that seems to dominate so many MMOs.

Most of us want to play, have fun, and if we make a mistake be able to fix it.

Is that so darn hard to understand? SHEESH! GIVE US FULL RESPECS!
Ocha Aug 27, 2009 3:24 PM
Dealbreaker.
Like someone else said, this is a dealbreaker. I simply won't play games that lack full respecs. I play games to have fun, not to worry about making bad build choices.
h8 crybabies Aug 27, 2009 3:19 PM
Shut up, whiners
I am so sick of people whining about no respecs. Just do your dang research people. Get on the forums. Read through the threads. Download the character planner. Then test things in the Powerhouse.

A couple hours of planning is no big deal. If you aren't willing to work on your character build, you deserve to have a crappy, weak character.
3l33t Aug 27, 2009 3:14 PM
I don't want respecs.
I don't want people to respec. I spent many hours researching my build just to get it perfect. I fully intend to absolutely obliterate noobs in PvP. I love my min/maxed build and I don't want anyone to figure it out and then be able to use the same tactics.

I want there to be lots of people desperately trying to earn acclaim with their gimpy builds. I intend to feast on them.
quixotic1 Aug 27, 2009 3:05 PM
Real simple. Make it happen.
Every game I have played where devs tried to resist respecs either failed or the devs eventually caved. It really is simple: players do not want to worry about gimping their character by a choice they will hate later. Full repecs are a must have.
Alabaster Aug 27, 2009 3:03 PM
What? CO doesn't have this?
I really need to read up on my games more. I just assumed CO had a full respec. When I saw the respec option at the trainer I said to myself "ok cool, they aren't being stupid and forcing me to spend half my gaming time doing research. I can respec."

I had no idea it had such a stupid limitation on it as your last 10 choices.

That's stupid, stupid, stupid.
James Tolbert Aug 27, 2009 3:02 PM
Love the game, but this is a dealbreaker
I played City of Heroes at launch, and after a couple of regrettable power picks the lack of a respec killed the game for me. So I unsubscribed.

A year or so later I read that they had finally added some, so I resubscribed. I have been playing every since. I have tweaked my main characters so many times I cannot even count. I love making little adjustments and playing with it for a few weeks or months.

Full respec in City of Heroes is the #1 feature that kept that game alive and vibrant for me.

I really want to play Champions Online, but I don't want a repeat of my early CoH experience. I'm sitting on the sidelines and waiting to see what they do about this respec issue. The day they announce a respec option, I'm jumping on board.
SuperTanker Aug 27, 2009 2:58 PM
Full respecs... gotta have em.
I don't understand people who argue against full respecs. You aren't affected - at all - by other people tweaking their character. The only effect it has is that you'll have more people to play with since more people will keep their subscriptions.

As the writer says, customization without the ability to undo those choices is not really customization at all.
DocEkko Aug 27, 2009 2:55 PM
Full respecs are a total necessity
Without full respecs, Champions Online is doomed. Nobody wants to have their character ruined because a power they picked a few weeks ago ends up not being as fun as they thought or is just not useful to them.

Furthermore, people don't want to be required to do tons of research before leveling up.

The author of this article is 100% spot on.

I canceled my preorder when I learned there was no full respec. I really love this game, but sadly it just isn't playable without a full respec option.

It isn't worth my time to risk the possibility of investing in a character that I end up hating because I cannot fix some power or stat choices.
Michael Hartman Aug 27, 2009 2:22 PM
RE: Champions Online Will Fail Without a Full Respec or Retcon Option
A great point made by a CO player:

No full respecs:

People who like rolling alts, will roll alts.

People who don't like rolling alts, will quit.

Add full respecs in:

People who like rolling alts, will roll alts.

People who don't like rolling alts, will stay on one character and continue to play
