The next World of Warcraft expansion pack was announced recently at the 2009 BlizzCon and we have details about the 7 all new zones that will be introduced in World of Warcraft: Cataclysm, as well as zone background and lore, and notable characters.

As most World of Warcraft players know by now, yesterday August 21st at BlizzCon 2009 the next WoW expansion pack was revealed. In the months prior to BlizzCon there was a lot of buzz on the internet, most of it speculation and some of it substantiated, about what we could expect in the new expansion. We knew that Blizzard had trademarked "Cataclysm", and from that it was concluded that there could be a WoW expansion centered around the Maelstrom. Others speculated that this expansion would also included aspects of the Emerald Dream, as they felt the lore of the Sundering and the Dream tied together.

As one of these speculators myself, I can say that I was completely taken aback when the announcement was made. The ambitious scope of the expansion massively exceeds my own expectations, and those of all I've spoken to about it since. So, without further ado, let's get to the details.

Cataclysm Premise Overview

The basic premise of the Cataclysm expansion is this: After the final conflict with Arthas in Northrend the heroes of the Horde and Alliance return to Kalimdor and the Eastern Kingdoms, only to find that the world they knew has been ripped apart.

The corrupted Black Dragon aspect Deathwing (originally Neltharion the Earth-Warder), long hidden beneath Azeroth in the elemental plane of earth has broken through the ceiling of the elemental plane into Azeroth. His immense power and malice has caused massive turmoil amongst the elements, with the earth breaking apart, massive tidal waves, tornadoes, and more. The entire face of Azeroth as we currently know it is changed.

There are several new zones being introduced in the Cataclysm expansion that are deeply rooted in Warcraft lore in addition to the massive overhaul of existing zones. Let's take a look at these new zones.

The Lost Isles

The Goblins are driven from their home island of Kazan by the effects of the cataclysm, and find themselves shipwrecked upon the Lost Isles. This is the starting zone for newly created Goblin characters and spans levels 1-15.

The proximity of these islands to the Horde controlled lands are essentially the whole reason the Goblins align with the Horde faction (besides the fact that the Horde needs a kneecapper race, too).

City of Gilneas
That's true Ainmix. Neither i look around when i m in a bg. But as for the city it could technicly be set during the Forsaken invasion of Gilneas. A historic event as it were, not a current battleground such as Strand or Isle of Conquest.

City of Gilneas
...There adding three BGs... And a pvp area... I mean... I thought that they were being nice with wotlk with 2... Why three... And why make one gilneas I wanted a worgen city that has made me very unhappy about the expanstion!!

To make it even worse the battleground doesn't even sound that fun. You stand in regions of the gilneas city to control it.... Joy, thats how combat works.

Gilneas has such cool buildings... I know they'll have at least one town in gilneas for 1-15 quests... (if there is only one town and no city thats gonna be ALOT of quests)... So yeah I really wish there is a city. Yeah they'll have the cool buildings in the battle ground... but when in a bg I don't look around and take in the scenery.

Yes Gilneas will serve as Alliance region. BUT indeed blizzard it didn't clarify if the city of Gilneas is also a worgen city apart from bg... From what i know blizz it said in a blue post that goblins they will have their city in Azshara. Why blizz didn't say from the start the same thing for worgen city? Instead of this it said to us that the city will be 1 from the 3 new bg and believe me in many forums it is said that worgen instead of City of Gilneas they will have new quarter in Stormwind cause of the bg ( something wich i find completely stupid ). Guys my main character is horde but i find very unfair for worgen not to take the city that BELONGS to them. I want to hope that all these are simple rumors. Ah btw Jesma ty for all information =)

Gilneas
Yes I understand that. I know that Gilneas will be region of Alliance. But i I ask if we will have the city. Blizzard said that the city of Gilneas will be one from the new bg. It did not clarify if the bg (Battle for Gilneas) is separately from the city and now prevails a chaos in forums about the ''worgen capital'' issue.

Gilneas
Excerpt from page 2: "Gilneas is the starting area for newly created Alliance Worgen, spanning levels 1-15. Battle for Gilneas is a battleground incarnation of the zone where players will battle through the streets of the city and take control of the various districts."

So as stated, it will be both the starting area AND a battleground.

City of Gilneas
Hey Jesma. Finally what is going on with Gilneas? I have heard a lot of rumors about it. Will it be a bg or a Capital City for the Alliance? I really want to see Ciy of Gilneas to serve as capital and not just a bg...
