Which MMORPG's are available for Linux, and how do you get them running on your system? We provide you with a long list of MMORPG games for Linux - MMORPG Games for Ubuntu, or any other Linux distribution. We'll also provide you with information on how to get your MMORPG running on Linux.

Online Games for Linux - What's Out There?

Linux builds make really great operating systems for many end user applications. With their superior security, functionality, adjustability, and customizability, for growing numbers of people Linux systems are the first OS choice after weighing all factors. Unfortunately, one factor which must be taken into account with Linux is the fact that there simply are not that many games available for Linux users, which sometimes can be a major hit to the value of the OS for people.

The good news is that having a pleasant gaming experience with Linux is slowly becoming more and more possible for people who do enjoy gaming. Not only are more games being made specifically for the Linux platform, there is also growing Windows games compatibility in Linux, through the use of the WINE Windows Compatibility Layer. Finally, there are quite a few browser-based games being made at the moment, which work just as well in a Linux internet browser as in any other computing environment.

This article series will focus on MMORPG's for Linux.. online games which are totally playable in Linux, and which in some cases are even exclusive to the Linux platform. I feel that there isn't as much awareness of Linux gaming as there should be, considering the solid-as-a-rock stability of the platform. I've never had a Linux game crash on me, something that probably no one could say about Windows games.

So, with no further ado, lets take a look at what kinds of MMORPG games are available for the Linux platform, and outline a few of the highlight games in each category.

Native Linux MMORPG's

If you haven't looked into exactly which games have Linux clients, you might be surprised to learn that even some of the top MMORPG games have had Linux clients created for them by the game developers. Some of the clients are better supported than others, but many games are just as playable in Linux as they would be in Windows.

Some examples of games with Linux clients are EvE Online, A Tale in the Desert 4, Vendetta Online, Regnum Online, Second Life, and Dofus.

In some cases, these games actually run better in Linux than they would in Windows. Linux is inherently a more stable operating system, using less resources than Windows, and it is a rare occurrence to get lockups or crashes in Linux operating systems. If you use Linux as your OS, this does not exclude you from participating in MMORPG gameplay. In fact, the list of Linux MMORPGs is growing every day, particularly with the use of the Windows emulator WINE. Additionally, browser games are usually playable in Linux as well.

There is also playonLinux
PlayonLinux has a list of games that are preconfigured with the files and the best version of wine to work for them. The plus side is you can configure wine through PlayonLinux, so you don't have to mess with your wine installation at all. If the way you set it up gets messed up, you simply delete that configuration. It works really well and is a great front end for wine, wish i knew of it sooner than i did lol. Its a real time saver so for all those with wine looking for games, get it, trust me.

RE: MMORPG Games For Linux - Overview
The list is them 3 games at the end of the article lol.. it's odd how developers leave linux out they underestimate the user base, but even if there was more linux friendly games there would still be alot of people in windows.
Simply because they too stupid to learn how to use linux 70% of windows users would be overwhelmed by the command lines of linux, and im talking about simple commands. i am no pro myself but i was intrigued enough to teach myself, years later still not many games support linux, it's getting annoying there is no reason for windows to be the top OS other then developers being too lazy to add support for linux.

Re:
John,
it should be called WHINE because of how much its supporters WHINE about how it really works. If it is a "translator" than for say it is a "virtual machine" running a windows-like codec environment for in which the program can run. AKA fancy way of saying its not a windows emulator in the sense of it showing microsoft XP in a window, but in the sense of it runs windows applications in a runtime environment in which linux can understand. Meaning yes, it is an emulator.

Regnum Online
Crap. Try it first and do not believe what they say. Its installer will tell you that it is some MS hack wrapped into some emulator. It drops you the well-known install shield window...
Everything, but not a native Linux client. And stable like its native OS.

WINE fanboys shut up!
Seriously, you don't need to copy & paste this every time someone mentions WINE. "Wine is Not an Emulator" is a joke referring to the popularity of recursive acronyms in the hacker culture (Gnu is Not Unix), and the difference between emulation (hardware emulation) and simulation (software emulation).

Translating calls is by definition, emulation. Stop re-posting this, you look like a bunch of babbling idiots.

RE: MMORPG Games For Linux - Overview
No, just no. Wine does not make anything "run like Windows". Wine makes Windows run like Linux. Linux can already execute Windows applications, it just can't understand what they say. It doesn't emulate anything. It translates.

John... Sincerely, thank you. I've seen the misinterpretation of WINE as WINdows Emulator way to many times. THANK YOU!!!

RE: MMORPG Games For Linux - Overview
WINE is not a Windows emulator. The name itself means "Wine Is Not an Emulator." WINE is a compatibility layer that helps translate between Windows apps and Linux. WINE doesn't emulate any process.
