Mining in Runescape is fairly easy. You get a pick and head toward a rock. It is a skill that is both profitable and fun and needed. You can use it in trading for items and in smithing. You’ll need the ore to smith into bars for weapons and armor, plus you can mine for a gem which is always fun.

Mining Pickaxes

To mine out ore and gems from rocks you’ll need a good pickaxe. The higher your mining ability the better the pickaxe that you can use.

  • Bronze, Iron – You need a mining level of one to use. A Bronze will cost 1gp an Iron will cost 140gp.
  • Steel – You will need a mining level of 6 and they cost 500gp.
  • Mithril – You have to have a mining level of 21 and they cost 1,300gp.
  • Adamantite – These need a mining level of 31 and they will cost 3,200gp.
  • Rune – This pickaxe will need a 41 mining level and it will cost you 32,000gp.

Repairs can be made on your pickaxe if it becomes loose. Pick up the head and put it back on the handle. If it becomes broken and unable to be used then you can take it to Nurmof so that he can fix it for you.

Getting Started Mining Ore

When you are just starting out you can get a pickaxe from the Barbarian Village or keep the one that you’ll get doing the tutorial. After that you can head to Varrock or the Scorpion Pit in Al Kharid, both have plenty of ores to mine out of rock. Clicking on a rock to mine or hit the “prospect” option that will tell you what kind of ore, if any, is inside. Once you click to mine, you will pick until you mine out the ore, however long that will be. Keep in mind the higher the level you are the less time and effort it will take to mine.

Getting Started Mining Gems

Mining gems starts out the same as mining ore. There are just times that you will mine out a gem instead of ore. Some gems are more valuable than others and can be found in different places than more common gems. The gems will be uncut. All regular gems like the sapphires, emeralds, rubies and diamonds, can be mined out of regular ore containing rocks. Other gems need to be mined out of Shilo Village once you are done with the quest there, those gems are opals, jades, and red topazes. All gems will give you 65 experience when you mine them out no matter what kind they are.

Ores

So, what mining level do you need to mine out the ore that you need? How much experience will you get for it? Here is a handy guide:

  • Clay ore – This needs a mining level of 1 and gives an experience of 5.
  • Copper and Tin Ore – You need a mining level of 1 and it will give you 17.5 experience.
  • Iron Ore – You need a mining level of 15 and it will give you 35 experience.
  • Silver Ore – You must have a level of 20 and it will give you 40 experience.
  • Coal – To mine coal you’ll need a 30 and you’ll get 50 experience.
  • Gold Ore – Required level to mine is 40 and you’ll receive 65 experience.

There are some special ores that are only mined for quests or for smithing certain items. These are the special ores that you can mine out and what you’ll need to do so.
