The Attack skill is a form of melee combat that will determine what types of weapons will be able to be used in the game and how accurate those weapons are. You are able, on most weapons, to train the “accurate” attack style. This is from the combat options menu and it will give an extra bit of bonus to your attacks, usually a +3 to the level. Fighting with this will give you a little edge.
Attack Levels
These are the attack levels you’ll need to be able to wield specific weaponry.
- Bronze Weapons – A level of one in attack is required.
- Iron Weapons – A level of one is required in the skill Attack.
- Steel Weapons – A level of five is needed in Attack.
- Black Weapons – An attack level of ten is needed.
- Mithril Weapons – You’ll need an attack level of twenty for mithril.
- Adamant Weapons – A level of thirty in attack is required.
- Rune Weapons – A level of forty is required in the skill Attack.
- Granite Weapons – A level of fifty is needed in Attack.
- Obsidian Weapons – An attack level of sixty is needed.
- Dragon Weapons – You’ll need an attack level of sixty for dragon weapons.
- Corrupt Dragon Weapons – A level of sixty in attack is required.

- The Godsword Weapon – You will need a level of seventy five in Attack for this weapon.
Attack Training
You are able to use combat training dummies to up your attack skill. You can train at the combat dummies located in Varrock and in Lumbridge. These are just practice dummies, designed to let you practice your skills and not be dealt damage. A dummy in Varrock gives 5.2 experience to Attack for each hit, while in Lumbridge it is 1 experience a hit. The attacks that you do to a practice combat dummy will not give you any hitpoint training, only attack experience. When your attack experience rises, you can choose to be in real combat situations to up your experience skill at a faster rate than what the combat dummies can give you.
Temporary Bonuses to Attack Skill
There are more temporary bonuses to attack rating for the paid members than for the free play characters. For free play there are basically only the prayers of Clarity of Thought (5% boost), Improved Reflexes (10% boost), Incredible Reflexes (15% boost) that will boost your attack skill. For the paid members however there are these other temporary boosts in addition to those. Additional prayers of Chivalry (15% boost) and Piety (20% boost) are useful. There are the potions of Attack (15% boost), Combat (3-12 boost), and Super Attack (20%) that can be used. There are the Cup of Tea (2 increase) and the Zamorak brew (25% boost). There are also things like the Salve amulet (15% boost to undead, or enhanced gives 20% boost to undead), the Ruby Harvest (20% boost), and the Black Mask or Slayer helmet (15% boost).
Overview
As you can see, the Attack skill is one that everyone is going to need to build up eventually. Especially if you are more for the combat aspects of the game than the gathering herbs and mining ore aspect. Attack will always be something that you'll need, better to get it sooner in your Runescape life than later.
