Similar as his predecessor, this sequel it don't give too much new elements to the gameplay, it's rather boring and little uninventive but still it has the charm of the first part and it can be enjoyed but don't expect something radical with this second part. As the original game there is no real story, besides that the player is the defender of Earth from aliens who want to invade it; but, this version was revamped a little bit and incorporated some new elements as 3D and 2D graphics as it was released on the 30th anniversary of this classical Arcade game.
The score for the story and overview are 3 stars over 5, as there isn't new relevant things in the game.
The gameplay is really addictive; yes, is extremely similar as the first part Space Invaders Extreme but it has a few twists and some technical and esthetical aspects were improved to make the player enjoy the experience to the fullest.
The use of the dual screen is improved and it gives to the player a more dynamic experience during the bonus areas as well during the regular game play as the controls will respond more quickly to the player commands. There are a few new elements as well, such as the Bingo system were a small board with certain colors matching the aliens the player is facing will appear on the upper screen and to win the bingo the player must kill 3 aliens of the same color that are shown in the board to win the bingo; other change that was made, was with the Fevertime; enemies of the lower row will turn yellow and then they will turn into blocks as soon they are destroyed.
Other aspects that changed as well and now are a perfect five are the music and BGM effects. The music score as well as the effect are more dynamical and more hip than the previous game, it really match the action that is in the game.
The graphics are really similar, the only difference that can be seen during the gameplay is that colors are brighter and they match a little bit more the original colors of the game. The controls are exactly the same as the first installment, there weren’t made any changes at all and that was a wise move as sometimes with some sequels the controls and the menu are changed to update the in-game looks.
The given to the gameplay is a four over five stars, even if they use the same formula as the first game, it is valid as it keeps the freshness of the franchise.
The game is good, is worth of buying it and it has plenty of reply value because the levels can be replayed and the difficulty of the game can be adapted to the skills of the player. The overall score to the game are four stars over five, because of its originality and freshness.
