Watchmen: The End Is Nigh PS3 Review

Watchmen includes a nice variety and array of attacks to use during combat, use a light attack, heavy attack, block, or throw, the choice is yours.

Watchmen has lively and brutal combat animations that stun the eyes for a few seconds when you first see them with a visual punch that packs entertainment value.

Watchmen is lacking in entertainment value for the $20 price tag in my opinion, and all things considered it appears they went for the quick money-grab, rather than the possibility of a long-term relationship.

The combat is kind of repetitive after a few hours, and takes some of the replay value away from the title, certainly you'll occasionally take it out and give it another try, but your not going to spend more than a few hours with the title unless you just want to beat something up.

The overall atmosphere of the environments looks pretty good and is a nicely rendered and realized reality you will remember at many points from both the movie and the comics. The developer, Deadline Games, did a good job reproducing the costumes, characters, and settings, and creating an atmosphere using lighting effects and impressively detailed environments.

The combat animations of the combos does add a nice flare to the visual appeal, they're brutal to watch but have nice touches that make them entertaining to view. The animation of the finishing moves is the real candy here as the camera zooms in and you see every blow in its brutal-glory in smooth animations of sharply modeled characters.

The voice acting is excellent, with actors who know their characters and don't over act, which is easy to do with voice acting. The characters dialogue is an endless variety of swear words, so you might want to keep the sound down or use headphones if the kids are around.

The sound effects match the action well and add to the immersive elements of the combat experience with brutal sounds of deadly- violence that will make you cringe as you watch the blows land.

Watchmen: The End is Nigh is set in the time period before the movies, when costumed vigilantes weren't outlaws being chased by the forces of the law. You get to play the game as either Nite Owl or Rorschach , or both in co-op mode scenario that is mentioned briefly in a couple panels in the comic books. Basically, you're looking for Underboss, a typical mafia type that you wish to have a violent and final discussion with, and you'll kill or maim anybody who gets in your way.

The combat system is fun, but it really starts to get old because it lacks variety after a few hours, so Deadline Games should have added more depth in combos to keep the game play fresh.

They did add a nice array and variety in unlockables that adds to the playability of Watchmen as you play again and again to find everything in the game.

The co-op mode works well and is the best part, especially with a friend who has the same tastes, but there's no on line option for co-op, which should be an automatic inclusion in a game developed today.

Watchmen: The End is Nigh is a fun, simple, and entertaining virtual experience for the first few hours and maybe even for one run-through of the game, but beyond this the combat and game play become repetitive and the desire to play again leaves the experience. Gamers who want to release some energy and frustration with simple combat that satisfies will be happy, but if you're looking for depth better skip this game.
