This RPG put out by Nippon Ichi for the PS2 allows the player to customize the game and command small armies in order to win the game. Soul Nomad & the World Eaters is a great RPG that anyone that loves a good military strategy game should try out.

Premise of Soul Nomad and the World Eaters

soul nomad boxSoul Nomad and the World Eaters places you in the drivers seat of this customizable RPG. Choose the name of your character and whether you want a male or female main character. With twenty-eight main characters and twenty-six generic characters, you will be able to create exactly the character you want for your army. Your character and his or her army is fighting against the World Eaters - those who committed attrocities across the land. While the World Eaters have been dormant for two-hundred years, rumor has it they may just be waking back up.

The Game's Playability

Because this game allows you to customize a great deal of your play, it offers the ability to play and replay over and over again, unlike some of the other popular role playing games. Battles are conducted outdoors - and in the style of Warcraft - a 2D view of the scene. This can make it so that navigating the battle is easier than in other games involving large battles. You can also create customized rooms for each of your soldiers - a feature that gives the game a bit of an edge with the appeal of games like the Sims. Some of the cutscenes feature extremely cheesy dialogue with goofy insults being delivered between the characters. If you like this sort of thing, you will get a huge kick out of the game. I found it a bit distracting from the game's storyline. The actual battles take place in scenes you've come accustomed to from games such as Final Fantasy - complete with the action menus. In all, the game is entertaining and enjoyable to play.

Game Graphics

While the game has a high entertainment value, the graphics leave something to be desired. The graphics simply seem unfinished and lackluster. The game background is often quite plain, compared to other games on this platform. Moreover, the background is painted rather than animated. While some may appreciate this artistic style, those who enjoy gaming graphics as much as they enjoy the game itself may be left disappointed.

Final Judgment
Rating Good

Soul Nomad is a great game for those die-hard RPG fans (like myself). If you love the traditional RPG, this game will give you a way to mix it up a little bit by commanding armies instead of bands of adventurers. Other great role playing games reviewed on Bright Hub include Star Ocean 3, Tales of the Abyss, and Gauntlet: Dark Legacy.
