A remake of the Mike Tyson’s Punch-Out, FaceBreaker offers a fast-paced flurry of powerful punches and colorful graphics. Read this review to learn more about this video game.

From the moment I turned out the game, I expected to be disappointed. The cartoonish graphics and predictable characters almost had me instantly turning the game off. However, I can say that I am glad that I continued to play. Like a knockout executed by the underdog in the last round, FaceBreaker was a pleasant surprise.

FaceBreaker combines the nostalgia of button-pushing champ Mike Tyson’s Punch-Out and the fast-paced action that one wouldn’t expect from a game like this. An aggressive flurry of punches brings enjoyment as players hammer on the buttons of the controller. Just remember, timing is everything in this game as the opponent will throw just as powerful punches, just as quickly as you can. Like the fast moves and dodges, specialized counterattacks and caricatures are added highlights.

As much fun as I had mindless pushing buttons, the combination of blocks, dodges and parries are just as thrilling. Once again it goes back to timing; a well executed punch-dodge-jab combination means nothing if you don’t time it up with the movement of the opponent. But, I’m not here to tell you how to play the game; only to review it.

Once I got use to the graphics, I started to enjoy the kiddie images and special light effects from special moves. The special audio and video effects only added to the ambiance of excitement that the game delivers on.

Although I though the game had some entertainment value, I did have some problems with it. The character movement was awkward and un-choreographed. There was a struggle to continue to reposition the fighter before executing dangerous combos on the opponent or after a counterattack. As far as the combinations, they are easy, yet tiring to execute. Even if the three button action is reminiscent of its predecessor, quickly pushing the same buttons over and over was tiring for my fingers.

ConclusionRating Average

FaceBreaker get 3 out of 5 stars. If you can get pass the mild annoyances or develop numb fingers, you are guaranteed hours of enjoyment. Plus, if you are a die-hard Mike Tyson’s Punch-Out fan, it may be worth your while. The game doesn't promote hours of continuous gameplay and the chances that I will play this game on a daily or weekly basis are slim; this is only due to the discomfort I received from the button pushing.
