The Wii is a great system and when you take a look at the Wii remote it looks a lot like the old Nintendo remotes so why shouldn’t the Wii be home to some new games for classic system titles. I say that it is time to do just that.
Sure, you could just download the old games on your Wii. The question is, who really wants to play a game that they have beaten 10 years ago? Or worse, one that your parents actually beat when they were kids? No, we should get some new titles out there!
Donkey Kong
Now before you go and say it, Donkey Kong Barrel Blast does not count. It has almost nothing to do with the original game. We need a classic style title, where you have to avoid a variety obstacles and maybe solve some puzzles to get needed objects and progress on. This could be an extremely fun first person style strategy game, and DK would, no doubt make a fun boss.
Duck Hunt
This game is always fun, never required a tutorial to figure it out. The Wii is becoming quickly known for its ability to give you fun and addictive games in a short format. This game could be great as a bundle with a few other short term shooting games. OK, maybe most people wouldn’t pay full price for that, but they could make it available as a Wii Ware title.
Dr. Mario
Not the original puzzle game but an RPG based on the idea could be a lot of fun. After all it has to be better than the first time they tried a Mario-based RPG. The Wii games with Mario as a feature have been some of the best and most fulfilling games for the Wii. Maybe a game like Trauma center only without the healing touch.
Kid Icarus
This one is pretty straight forward. I don’t want to change any of the format or the genre. The exact same plot too just beef up the graphics. A next generation graphics. Underworld to escape, Medusas and goddesses combined with the potential to use your bow and arrow to have amazing aim with the Wii-mote is tempting enough. If it was not then you could just market it one the flight angle. Can we say natural tilt controls.
Of course, that is only the game that were not re-made. Several games have been re-made just not in a way to the Nintendo DS, but these are usually geared towards kids, and not more than a minor re-hash. Except for Super Mario for DS. That was cool.
In the end we can only hope that Nintendo comes to their senses and remembers that to make a great game they do not have to go buying new licenses or going into endless streams of short game compilations. These classic titles could become a new generation of players. In the end there is nothing quite like a classic.
