Guide to Horses in Red Dead Redemption

Your horse is your ride in Red Dead Redemption. If you pick a good horse you'll be able to travel the countryside in style. If you pick a bad horse you'll have a hard time keeping up with other cowboys and escaping danger. This guide will help you pick the best one.

No Horsing Around

In Red Dead Redemption your horse is your only form of go-anywhere transportation. Without your horse you're stuck walking, which is slow and boring, not to mention deadly in many situations. Chasing opponents and being chased by opponents on horseback is a common part of Red Dead Redemption, so you'll want to make sure you have a good horse.

Finding the Best Horse

There are many horse breeds in Red Dead Redemption. The three which are most wanted are the American Standardbred, Hungarian Half-Bred and Kentucky Saddler.

You'll find that the American Standardbred is the fastest. It is completely black, which makes it a very easy breed to pick out if you don't have your own horse nearby and you need to horse-jack a different animal. The Kentucky Saddler is a pearl color, while the Hungarian Halfbred is white with a darkened face. These two breeds are not quite as fast as the American Standardbred, but still very speedy.

Another great horse is the War Horse. The War Horse is very fast and strong and has great stamina. However, you can only gain access to this horse if you purchase the limited edition or you pre-ordered the game from select retailers.

Identifying a horse breed by eye is, of course, most useful when you're out on the range and need to grab a horse immediately. You can also buy a horse from a general store.

Other Types of Horse Breeds

Ardennais - This is a typical horse with a brown coat. Normal speed, normal price.
  • Cleveland Bay - Unlocked in high level multiplayer, but not very special, with normal speed and stamina.
  • Dutch Warmblood - A black and brown horse with normal speed and stamina.
  • Highland Chestnut - Above-average stamina, average speed. Has dark hind legs and a lightly colored body.
  • Jaded Tersk - Gray in color and looks puny. Not a fast horse, but inexpensive to buy.
  • Lusitano - A fairly basic horse, red, average speed and stamina.
  • Lusitano Nag - A sickly horse unlocked in multi-player. Not worth riding under any circumstances.
  • Standardbred Pinto - White and brown horse with normal speed and stamina.
  • Tersk - Champagne colored horse with normal speed and stamina.
  • Tobianto Pinto - Same as the Standardbred, but with white on its face.
  • Turkmen - Unlocked in multi-player. Not that amazing of a horse, actually. Just a bit above average in all regards.
  • Quarter Horse - A variant of the Chestnut breed. Has a white face, average speed and stamina.
  • Welsh Mountain - An average brown horse with white legs and face.

Not All Horses are Created Equal

As you can see, there are a lot of horses in the game which are very average overall. However, all horses in the game of the same breed are not equally good or bad. You will notice that some horses simply look stronger, with a larger and more muscular stance, while others will look sickly and thin. This is the game's way of telling you that a horse is stronger or weaker than normal.

How many lives does a horse have?
I have finished the game, but it seems it does'nt remember very well because the last 3 missions are still there. Mostly now I just ride around at random and look for trouble. I like to catch horses and feed them apples. Since you can only have 5 at a time,I stop at every store and Doctor to buy more. My question is , when a cougar or a bear kills my horse, how often can I whistle for a new one? I get attached to my horse and I hate to see it killed. I even feel sorry for the horses of the bad guys I have to kill. I always give them an apple and if I'm close to home, I will ride them and whistle for the first horse to follow. I have stashed up to 8 horses at Manzanila Post where I stay in the cabin behind the stagecoach.

White Stallion
What about the White Stallion? About midway through the game you have the opportunity to catch & tame a White Stallion to purchase a China man's freedom. It seemed to be a very fast horse, so I went out and caught another one for myself to ride. Has anyone compared it to the American Standardbred? Also, when & where in the game can you purchase an American Standardbred? Every vendor I have gone to states that they are Sold Out.

The only fast horse I've been given the opportunity to purchase was the Kentucky Saddler, so I purchased it. However, it doesn't seem to be as fast as the White Stallion that I have now. Has anyone else ridden the White Stallion and what are your thoughts on it? Incidentally, they take longer to break than any other horse I have broken.

Much ado about boughten
If either of you would have checked the dictionary, or even did a quick google search, you would have found "boughten". Rarely used but it is acceptable English.

Right?
Yea I wasn't going to bother but for someone trying to downsize the grammar police, he sure did sloppy work on that post. Hard to believe with his greater level of intellect & all.

Joe's missing a close quote at the beginning. A thought following an open parens should not begin in lower case, and before the moron statement should be a ; not a :

Way to fail California. ;)

Disclaimer:
;) is not intended to be a complete sentence.

re CaliforniaJoe
I see nothing wrong with his quotations; since Chris was citing a reference, ie Cindy's post, the quotations would go around the word in subject like so "boughten"
which is what he wrote

The donkey
I find the mule the fastest in many circumstances I highly recommend it, ignore the 1 star star it has because that is based on how big it is and not its speed.

Re: Chris
""boughten?" ... If you're going to be the almighty grammar police, get your quotations in order, fella.

The quotes (They look like this: ". Sorry, this is as close as to Crayolas as I can get online!) go after the sentence. Like the following statement: "Man, that Chris guy sure is a petty moron."

Sure. "Boughten" is a silly word. But don't be a keyboard Napoleon. Or it opens you up for ridicule by people with greater levels of intellect, that would have otherwise left you alone. Find another way to feel good about yourself, cupcake.

Get it? Good!
