Standing-Probing range: At this range fighters can achieve maximum extension from their strikes and put maximum power behind their strikes. This range is great for Kickboxers and Muay Thai fighters' kicks, especially when facing Boxers, who can't reach as far with their punches. This is a good range to stay at if you're afraid of being pulled into a collar tie clinch or hit with clinching strikes. Note, at this range it's possible to get pulled into a body clinch.
You can transition from standing-probing range to standing-striking range; up/down, near and up/down, far when defending. You can transition into standing-probing range from standing-striking range; Muay Thai clinch; single collar tie, left; double underhooks, open guard, half guard, and side control.
Standing-Striking: Standing-striking range is the closest the fighters can stand to each other and still get full extension on their strikes. This is the preferred standing position for Boxers, who can use their punches effectively at this range.
