There are some interesting differences when you compare the Xbox vs PS2 specs. What makes them work? If you are tech-savvy and are curious about what goes on inside these video console games (especially the Xbox 360 and PS2), this article will help you gain a better understanding.

Xbox vs PS2 Specs – CPU

PS2 consoleThe Xbox video game console has an Intel CPU with modified Pentium 3. Its functions with three symmetrical cores each running at 3.2 GHz, a 0.18-micron process at 733 MHz, 32 bit integer, 80-bit floating point operations (x87) FPU (floating point unit) ,64-bit MMX (multi-media extensions) ,128-bit SSE (Streaming SIMD Extensions) per core ,32KB L1 Cache ,128KB L2 Cache , and 1980 Dhrystone MIPS (million instructions per second).

The PS2 CPU is a 128 bit “Emotion Engine” with 24 KB cache. It is this feature that gives the console it backwards capability for original PlayStation games. It functions at 300MHz with 6.2 billion floating-point operations per second, 2 x vector processing units (Floating Point Multiply Accumulator x 9, Floating Point Divider x 1), 3.2 GB per second bus bandwidth, and 1.8 watt power consumption (maximum).

Xbox vs PS2 Specs- Hard Drive Space (HDD)

The Xbox console has an internal 8 GB hard disk drive. There is no expansion bay to allow any additional space. It does have a memory card slot that allows a 5 MB memory card for game file transfers (an optional item that is purchased separately).

The PlayStation 2 video game console (3000/5000 non-slim versions) have an 3x5 expansion bay that will allow you to upgrade the console and install up to a 40 GB hard disk drive (HDD). It requires a network adapter to function properly. The HDD is removable and portable to other PS2 compatible consoles. The later slim style PS2 models do not have an expansion bay. In addition, it has 2 memory card slots (for use with optional memory cards).

Xbox vs PS2 Specs - Memory

XboxFor its main memory, Xbox has 64 MB DDR SDRAM that is 128 bits wide, functioning at 200 MHz, 400 Mb (mega bit) per second per Pin and 6.4 GB per second bandwidth. Alternatively, the PS2’s main memory is 32 MB RAMBUS DRAM at 32 bits wide (dual channel 16-bit), functioning at 400 MHz (800 MHz Effective) with 800 Mb (mega bit) per second per pin and 3.2 GB per second bandwidth.

Xbox vs PS2 Specs - Other Comparable Features

Format compatibility

The Xbox can play CDs and standard DVDs. The unit has a DVD ROM, but will require the “DVD movie playback” add on in order to play DVD movies. PlayStation 2 does not require any add on for DVD playback and can run both CD and DVD (Dolby digital/DTS) formatted discs.
