Mario games have been the bread and butter of the Nintendo consoles. With every new system came a new set of Mario-based games, but not all of them were something to be proud of *ahem* Dr. Mario *ahem.* While the Italian plumber has let us down on occasion, he always makes a comeback somehow. Here is my list of the six best classic Mario games ever.
6. Super Mario Brothers
Yes, the original game makes a spot at the top of the list. I couldn't even have a list without including some love for the game that started it all. From the simple graphics and game play to the not so well-hidden warp tubes, the game is still fun to this day.
5. Super Mario Kart (SNES)
I know, everyone likes Mario Kart for the N64 more than the SNES version, but I disagree. The SNES Mario Kart had charm in its simplicity. All modes of play are fun (Battle Mode is awesome), and the attacks are simple and amusing. Plus, who can ever forget driving on the Rainbow Road?
4. Super Mario Brothers 2
This is not only one of the best Mario games, but also one of the weirdest. There is no jumping on enemies to kill them, no goombas or koopa troopas, and no Bowser. You can even play as a hovering Princess Toadstool. But in all of its strangeness it still delights. Throw some turnips and have some fun.
3. Super Mario Brothers 3
Highly anticipated upon its release, Super Mario Brothers 3 does not disappoint, even to this day. From the wonderfully addicting Battle Mode, to the addition of a raccoon tail, Mario really grew up. The game is longer and more complex then either of its predecessors, with more interesting worlds in which to explore. It is the standard which all Mario platformers follow.
2. Mario and the Search for the Seven Stars
What? A Mario RPG? Yes! And it is awesome! Turn based fighting, Bowser joining your group, a weird mole mine train ride; this game has it all. It is some of the most fun I've ever had playing an RPG. Without this game, Paper Mario may have never been made. Think about it.
1. Super Mario World
It is the number one classic Mario game of all time. Not only does Super Mario World combine the best elements of the NES Mario games, it adds some wonderful new ones: ghost houses, secret worlds and more. With over 90 worlds to conquer this game will keep you busy for a long time. The twelve-year-old me really agrees.
