Playing N+ in Xbox 360 Live

The Xbox Live Arcade game N+ may seem simple enough: jump around, grab walls, dodge lasers, get gold. But there are nuances to the physics that may escape frustrated players.

  • Momentum is key. You can bound up a wall almost instantly if you fling your body at it full-speed. With a bit of momentum, instead of jumping off a wall while holding the L-stick towards it, try a neutral jump off the wall for some extra lift. Similarly, most of your robot deaths come from losing momentum by turning to run the other way or landing flat-footed. Instead, try to find a wall to jump off of to change direction, and you'll still have a good bit of speed when you land.
  • Missile turrets. Of course, they're the absolute worst. You can barely outrun them at full speed, their turning radius is brutally sharp, and the missiles still track you even without line of sight. Well, that last one is probably the only saving grace, actually. If you pick up a bogey, find some land to put between you and it and then sit tight. Alternately, if you confront a missile in the open, your only chance is to draw the missile towards you and then give it a change of direction at the last second by jumping over it or running under it, forcing its arc to go as huge as it ever will and hopefully make contact with ceiling or floor.
  • Slopes can be the greatest hazard in the game. They affect your speed, screw up your jumps, and either bounce you up into or drag you down towards a huge cluster of mines. It sounds simple on paper, but make sure to get a feel for how slopes affect your jumps; jumping while running up will give you a standard jump up with your forward motion, while a neutral jump will launch you perpendicular from the surface. And if you ever need to scale a long steep slope, repeatedly jump while running up to build up speed.
  • Watch the replays. When you get stuck, check out the leaderboards from the pause menu and pull up a replay. You may not be able to match the masters' perfect twitch skills, but it will give you an idea of how to get around the nastiness.

Now, keep dying over and over until it makes sense!
