If you like zombie movies, you'll like Dead Rising, the game so full of Romero goodness that it landed a lawsuit. However, your sugar-plum visions of zombie genocide might be snagged on a single obstacle. Just as the player is getting comfortable with zombie mob management and rescuing survivors, an unforeseen factor descends upon the courtyard after 6 p.m. on the first night. For reasons unknown, three orange-jumpsuited convicts have managed to steal an army jeep with a mounted machine gun and have set themselves to tormenting your poor survivors. They will slow you with non-stop gunfire. They will run you over. Your survivors will die, and then you will die. You remembered to save, right? Well, don't give up, there is hope yet!

  1. If you're carting a caravan of survivors back home when you meet the convicts, your best option is to run. They'll get mowed down if you try to attack the jeep. If you stick to the trees, keep out of the gun's range, and smartly set waypoints, you should be able to make it to your destination.
  2. If reaching the distressed Sophie is questionable, let her go. She'll be much easier to save the next time around with a couple of levels under your belt.
  3. Ready to bring the pain and put an end to their terrible rock-rap soundtrack? You're gonna need an arsenal. If you haven't cleared out The Huntin' Shack yet (another hurdle worth detailing), you can find powerful submachine guns in a couple of locations:

    - On the blue ledge above Shoekin's in Paradise Plaza. Get up there by jumping from the middle of the stairs.

    - On the ledge of the Chris' mascot sign in the Food Court.

    - In the water fountain of Al Fresca Plaza. Additionally, during the very first attack in the Entrance Plaza, you can find a shotgun in a pile of feeding zombies by the stairs.

  4. Now that you're strapped, get the convicts' attention and make a beeline for any tight cluster of trees. They'll futilely ram it over and over, giving you some nice stationary bodies to perforate. Of course, take out the gunner first to defang the beast. If you feel like humiliating the remaining two convicts, you can grab the mounted machine gun from the jeep for massive damage. With a bit of luck, I was able to take them out at level 4, so as long as you have the guns, it's possible.

You did it! Now you can cackle like a madman as you run over scads of zombies in the jeep with a dead convict flopping around in the back. However, brace yourself for some bad news: they'll be back. The convicts somehow respawn every night, but at least the next time around, you'll have leveled up enough to reduce their antics to a trifle.
