Esomeprazole magnesium (Nexium) is prescribed to treat and relieve the symptoms produced by gastroesophageal reflux disease. This disease often produces painful attacks of heartburn. Heartburn is caused by the stomach acid rising into the esophagus. Nexium is prescribed to heal the damage caused by this condition and to relieve the heartburn. This medication can also be prescribed in combinations with other medications to treat infections that cause duodenal ulcers. The medication works by reducing the amount of stomach acid produced.
Usage Information
Nexium comes in the form of time release capsules. For this reason it is important they are swallowed whole to fully be effective. It is best to take this medication one hour before a meal. If you happen to miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is too close to the time of your next dose, skip the missed dose completely.
Rarely, overdose of this medication can occur. Symptoms of overdose include confusion, blurred vision, and drowsiness. Dry mouth, headache, and flushing of the body may also occur. Sweating, nausea, and increased heart beat are other symptoms of an overdose. If you experience any of these symptoms, seek medical treatment immediately.
Side Effects
All the side effects of esomeprazole magnesium currently remain unknown. The known side effects are not severe. Common side effects of this medication include headache, diarrhea, and abdominal pain.
Interactions
Nexium has shown to interact poorly with certain medications. This medication can interact with diazepam, digoxin, and iron salts. It has shown to interact with Ketoconazole and warfarin as well. Nexium does not appear to interact with other antacids.
Warnings
The complete effects this medication has on pregnant women remain unknown. It is important to inform a doctor if you are pregnant or plan on becoming pregnant before using this medication. The medication can also transmit into breast milk. This can cause harm to an infant. This will cause you to have to choose whether to continue taking the medication or to continue breast feeding.
