Galantamine hydrobromide is a type of medication used in the treatment of Alzheimer's disease. It comes in an extended release form. It can help to improve some of the symptoms, but it will not cure this disease. It is also prescribed under the brand name Razadyne. This medication often takes a minimum of four weeks before positive results are noticed.

This medication is used in the treatment of the dementia associated with Alzheimer's disease. It can help to improve a patient's awareness, memory, and ability to complete their daily tasks. This medication helps to alleviate dementia by restoring neurotransmitter balance in the brain.

Certain medical conditions may cause a patient to not be able to take this medication. The contraindicated medical conditions include severe kidney disease, liver problems, severe liver disease, kidney problems, urination problems, intestinal and stomach problems, seizures, heart problems, lung and breathing problems, and allergies.

Patients taking galantamine hydrobromide may experience side effects. The common side effects include nausea, weight loss, vomiting, loss of appetite, dizziness, and diarrhea. The serious side effects include fainting, trouble urinating, abnormally slow heartbeat, irregular heartbeat, seizures, severe abdominal and stomach pain, bloody/black stools, and coffee ground-looking or bloody vomit. Patients who experience serious side effects should seek immediate medical attention and contact their physician.

Certain drugs may interact with this medication. Patients should tell their doctor about all medications they take prior to starting this one. The drugs that may interact include anticholinergic drugs, calcium channel blockers, aspirin, beta-blockers, heart medications, cholinergic drugs, azole antifungals, cholinesterase inhibitors, SSRI antidepressants, amitriptyline, and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.

Patients should use extreme caution when participating in dangerous activities. Patients who are scheduled for surgery should tell their doctor they are taking this drug prior to having surgery. Women who breastfeed or are pregnant may not be able to use this medication.
