Clorazepate dipotassium is sold under the name Tranxene and is prescribed for anxiety and epilepsy symptoms.

Uses and Dosage

Clorazepate dipotassium belongs to a class of drugs known as benzodiazepines and is sold under the brand name Tranxene. It is used for temporary relief of symptoms of anxiety disorders. It is also used for the symptoms of acute alcohol withdrawal and to help in treating certain convulsive disorders such as epilepsy. Tranxene T-tab tablets are taken orally in divided doses. The usual daily dose is 30 mg and may be adjusted gradually within the range of 15 to 60 mg daily if needed in the patient. In elderly or debilitated patients the treatment is begun at a daily dose of only 7.5 to 15 mg.

The effectiveness of this drug has been shown to be effective in treating anxiety short-term, that is, for not more than four months. Long term studies of epilepsy treatment by the drug do show effective results with prolonged therapy. Patients taking this medication should have follow-up checks with their doctors to ensure that the drug is effective after prolonged periods.

Side Effects

Side effects of this medication cannot be predicted but may include depression, difficulty in falling asleep or staying asleep, blurring of vision, double vision, dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth, headaches, irritability, lack of muscle coordination, urinary tract disorders, stomach and intestinal disorders, skin rashes, slurred speech and tremors.

Risks

The prolonged use of clorazepate dipotassium can cause addiction, and withdrawal symptoms may be experienced if the medication is stopped abruptly. Withdrawal symptoms include abdominal cramps, convulsions, difficulty in sleeping or falling asleep, hallucinations, impaired memory, irritability, muscle aches, nervousness, tremors, diarrhea and vomiting. Changes in dosage and the cessation or continuation of the medication should only be done under the supervision of a doctor.

Administration

This medication should be taken as prescribed by a doctor. If a dose is missed it should be taken as soon as possible if it is within one hour of dosage time. Otherwise, it should be skipped and the regular schedule continued on the next dose. Two or more doses should never be taken at once. This drug should be protected from excessive heat and stored at room temperature.

Contraindications

Patients with sensitivity to or allergic reactions with clorazepate diotassium should inform their doctors immediately. Individuals with eye conditions such as glaucoma should not take this drug. Additionally, it is not recommended for everyday stress and for more serious conditions such as depression or severe psychological disorders.
