When it comes to biotechnology applications
and the potential for improving medicinal, agricultural and other major
industries, the spectrum of what the techniques are continues to grow and expand.
But where did the theory of biotechnology originate from, and how has it
changed since its inception?
The most useful and beneficial application
of biotechnology is in the use of cultivating plants in order to produce crops
and food products that are suitable and healthy for all living organisms, most
importantly humans. In fact, agriculture has been said to have become the most
domineering way in which food is produced ever since the Neolithic revolution.
Although some principals may have remained the same, the methods and processes
that are used in agricultural biotechnology have continued to be refined and
new uses constantly discovered.
The early farmers who used
biotechnology applications in their farming methods were able to choose and find
the crops with the highest yield potential in order to produce enough quality
food to sustain life of growing populations. This useful method proved to be only a stepping stone in
the full discovery of what biotechnology can do for the agricultural and
farming industries.
It became necessary that other uses of
biotechnology in agricultural applications were needed. This is due in part to
the fact that the farmers were maintaining larger fields than they were
accustomed to in order to meet the demands of growing populations. This created a lack in the quality of crops to
account for the increased quantity that was needed. It is reasons like those
that made researchers and scientists work to discover new ways to incorporate
the use of biotechnology applications into the use of their crops and fields.
In addition to the increasing number of
crops that had to be maintained, there was also starting to be a negative
impact on the environment due to the increased discovery and use of fertilizers
and harmful chemicals used to increase the production of the crops. This started
to raise a lot of concern, and prompted researchers to step up their efforts in
the field of biotechnology. It is because of the early needs and uses of
biotechnology that it has became such an integral part of the farming and
agricultural industries that we see today. As the technology improves, we can
expect to continue to see improvements made in the techniques of farming as
well as the improvement in quality of the crops and products that are produced.
